I'd never thought about the similarly with hocus-pocus but yeah, maybe a little. It maybe also because Band-Maid has touch of progressiveness in their music. Listen to Sayonakidori and Corallium, You might hear more instrumental version of yodelling...or polka.

If your blood pressure isn't on the rise after this then you better get a check up. "Connecting with their audience"? OMG That's what they're all about. They actually write songs for their fans. They have breaks in their US concerts to engage with the fans (mostly in English! ). They write songs to engage the fans. They performed 5 streamed concerts during the lockdown for us when nobody was Live including an Acoustic Christmas concert in 2021. I'm sure I've missing some other stuff. Check out DOMINATION-LIVE for bit of crowd connectivity. Peace. 2.2

The ultimate Band-Maid fan connection is the song "Memorable", followed by "About Us". Both of them are a mix of acoustic and electric guitars and are written for and about their fans. They do have technical brilliance as seen here, but don't get the idea that Band-Maid makes mechanical, soulless music. "Daydreaming" is a song that has a lot of "feels" to it. You should check it out.

"connection with their fans" ..... these 5 ladies demonstrate this in many forms. They have written songs solely supporting their relationship with their fanbase ("About us" and "memorable"). Even the maid persona shows their willingness to "serve" their masters and princesses. They always are humble and acknowledge their desire to please their fans. They even watch reactors to their music (most famously interacting with a reactor "Mr Rock n Roll" at one of their US tour venues). I, as a long time fan, have never in my life experienced a band with so much love and appreciation for its fanbase.

I appreciate your comment, Gerard, thanks. Let me take the opportunity to say, generally, since it's come up a few times - I didn't say or mean "connection with their fans". I actually meant a human connection - even among themselves - that can be heard in the playing - even of the most rocking songs they have, not just ballads. I mean the stuff you hear in every note Led Zeppelin ever created, for example. I guess it didn't get communicated properly, because we're getting lots of ballad requests in response! Also seem to have triggered some of the fan base to get a little incredulous and unruly over it. I've had to toss some folks, which usually only happens on Who videos.

@@glennandadriansrocktalk Guys, not sure who's getting unruly but be aware that there are a couple of professional trolls running around comment threads intentionally trying to stir up trouble between and for fanbases of several different bands. You might be dealing with some of them. The B-M fanbase tends to be very civil. Some of them are a little, uh, hyper-enthused but there are only a tiny few that will get unruly. There's also been a bit of sh*t slinging lately by fans who can't stand to see their favorite bands not get all the attention and praise. So, I think tensions are a little elevated. It's like a bunch of overstimulated 15-year-olds. Ridiculous.

Memorable is a love song they wrote to their fans when they got to tour again after Covid and they got to connect again with their fans. Or just watch any of the omajinae time videos you can find on the youtubes where Miku interacts with the fans at every concert to get all the fans involved... I've been to dozens of live concerts and I've never seen a band like this that connects with their fans every single time.

I believe so did many of American audience in their recent three US tours. This song has been normally played in the middle of the setlist to give Saiki, lead vocalist, some break. They played this song, however, as opening at festivals and in Guns N' Roses concert in Japan as support to the legendary band. Yeah! they showed off their skills and talents to the audience who knew nothing about the girls in maid outfit on the stage. I felt as if I heard them screaming "Hey guys! Listen to us and open your eyes wide! We are not the persons that you think ! Salute us!" 😄

"Emotional connection" = Go to a Band Maid show (preferably in Japan). As a Jazz fusion guy, I connect with the music and not to much with the lyrics (even though I understand Japanese). But, I am starting to get into the lyrical minds of the "Hato" and "Ice Queen," and I'm realizing the songs meaning goes deep into the Japanese culture and not only the storyline, Po! Thanks for sharing! 🦍🍌 PS, when I 1st found Band Maid, I thought the same about the "feels." They were highly technical but lack the "feels" like in the blues or flamenco art forms. Like fine wine, they have aged well in the past 10 years. I think they are getting past the "technicals" and, now, "feeling" the music. As the "Hato" say, "Are you exciting, Po!?"

Band-Maid definitely has a prog streak, but they usually don't sacrifice accessibility or songwriting for technicality, so you're not going to get any flute solos or 13/8 beats or weird experimental stuff or 15-minute epics. The prog is all hidden in the technical playing and the dense layering. That said, some songs are more overtly prog - try Black Hole for high-speed genre-bending madness, Giovanni for some weird song structure and some really interesting parts, Why Why Why for a song that runs through several different feels/styles, Wonderland for more of a midtempo jazzy song with some surprises, or Balance for some weird swingy beats. As others have said, Band-Maid does lots of audience connection - talky breaks, singalong parts in most of their songs, and when you see them live you can see how they feed off (and return) the crowd's energy. You guys might enjoy Freedom live. If you're looking for more emotional songs, try About Us (a letter to the fans about missing them during COVID) or Memorable (kind of a sequel to About Us, about their feelings from the first post-COVID US tour, where they received a much warmer reception from US audiences than they expected). Daydreaming has a lot of emotion, and so does the acoustic Puzzle performance from Zepp Tokyo if you track that down.

"From Now On" very much connects emotionally with me, but if you need emotional lyrics to get that connection, then Puzzle, or About Us (a pandemic song written in response to fans who were struggling - the "Us" is Band-Maid and their fans), or Sayonakidori are good places to start. There are plenty of others, but I've picked ones that provide English subtitles in the official version. Honestly, on musicianship they are fantastic but there are other bands (e.g. Asterism or Sokoninaru among Japanese bands) I'd rate even higher, but on the emotional connection aspect, I would put Band-Maid right at the top.

I'm not sure if it's different sorts of chord progressions (I'm not a musician) or something, but their songs have really grown on me over the 3 years since I found them. I do think it's a big step away from the blues rock and folk rock that I was raised on. For me, Puzzle is the song of theirs that hits me hardest in the "feels", and not just the acoustic version. That's what I haven't been able to get to yet.

@@glennandadriansrocktalk Well, then “Domination” serves that up too. Lots of smiles and interactions between players, inside jokes played on the drummer, etc. The Maids are warrior friends, for sure. Not many bands stay together for over a decade and still celebrate each other’s birthdays together

Lol. "Hocus Pocus" is a pretty far reach although it certainly is a very high energy song and the yodeling is a nice touch, but pretty un-Band-Maid in that aspect. Band-Maid is a very versatile, dynamic band that incorporates many different genres into their over 120 original songs. You have heard only three, so there are many songs left to go. Band-Maid refers to their live concerts as "servings" as in the Maid Cafe concept as entertaining their customers by direct involvement at their "serving table". Their cute maid uniforms are more than just a gimmick but represent a segment of Japanese culture that is focused on providing for the individual's personal enjoyment and entertainment. Their goal is to always connect with their audience, and this is accomplished by their electrifying stage presence and by encouraging direct audience involvement. Try their official live concert song "Puzzle" and then watch their emotionally heart-breaking acoustic version of the same song played live. Perhaps a ballad would be worth seeing like "Daydreaming" "About Us", "Endless Story", "Wonderland" to name a few. Remember, Band-Maid is primarily a hard rock band although they do have a deep connection with songs have a deeper impact as in their remarkable ballads. They do not write and record fluff or filler songs. They are very serious artists and elite musicians who take their craft seriously but want to have fun on stage when they let loose and rock. Try their official live song "Domination" or "Freedom" as examples. You have barely scratched the surface of this incredible band and if they are not your cup of tea, then that's fine. Millions of fans will continue to marvel at their great music anyway and enjoy being thoroughly entertained by them. Cheers.

You're welcome! Not instrumental, but we just reacted to DarWin "Inside This Zoo" today as well, and for the Warning check out "Dust To Dust" - we've done that one twice. Those are both great songs. I'm realizing I didn't get across my point, I wasn't really talking about ballads. We're going to keep listening because we do like the band, but it feels like we might be missing something. Just trying to find that piece.

You're right, Hocus Pocus is a bit of a reach. But, I was thinking high-energy instrumental, with the occasional quiet or solo part, coming back to the same theme. But no yodeling. Just the level of energy, it was reminiscent of a performance I once saw of Hocus Pocus. They were really getting into it, too. But Focus is nothing like Band-Maid - very different worlds. I'm a prog fan, and definitely becoming a Band-Maid fan as well.

@@AdrianFink Nothing at all wrong with comparing Band-Maid with a high energy song that you enjoyed in the past. That Band-Maid can effortlessly pour out that high intensity energy in song after song is truly incredible. They can incorporate prog as well as many other genres into a particular song, as needed, to produce a delicious mix of tantalizing music. Enjoy your journey of discovery into one of the world's best bands. Cheers.

"...bone crunching metal and not prog-rock." Prog doesn't really have a universally agreed upon definition. They use progressive elements within most of their music. Listen to "Why Why Why," "Giovanni," and "Honkai" from their album Unseen World (unfortunately none of them have official music videos) and tell us that's not prog.

There are plenty of elements of progressive rock in this song (and not the typical odd time signatures, 15-minute epic songs and flute solos that Chris mentioned). But the comment of "bone-crunching metal and not prog-rock" was actually in reference to the comparison of Band-Maid vs. Hocus Pocus. Band-Maid definitely has prog elements but I was talking about the Hocus-Pocus 70's style 'prog' - which isn't Band-Maid. I should say there are _both_ bone-crunching metal and prog elements in the music of Band-Maid. And like Glenn, I'm also getting to really like this band.

@delorangeade Obviously it is a matter of taste. To your ears it screams at you. To my ears Kanami's guitar takes me on a melodic soaring journey that would work well in an action movie soundtrack. I'm glad you feel like you gave them a fair shot. Obviously their sound isn't appealing to you. I'm sure there are other bands out there that suit your ears better.
