Brothers REACT to Band-Maid: Don't you tell ME (Live 2023)

Ойын-сауық

Hailing from Japan and formed in 2013, Band-Maid has carved a unique niche in the music scene. Their sound blends the traditional aesthetics of Japan with a modern hard rock and heavy metal punch. The band, consisting of Miku Kobato on vocals and rhythm guitar, Kanami Tōno on lead guitar, Saiki on vocals, Akane on drums, and Misa on bass, has captured international attention with their electrifying performances and infectious energy.
One of their most popular tracks, "Don't you tell ME," comes from their 2017 album "Just Bring It." This high-octane hard rock song features powerful vocals that exude an air of confidence and rebellion. Kanami Tōno's impressive guitar solo adds another layer of excitement, while the live performances often incorporate dance elements, further amplifying the song's infectious energy. "Don't you tell ME" has become a fan favorite, praised by audiences and reviewers for its musicality and distinct style.

There are an amazing number of Maidiacs in the world. I'm 75 years old and have seen a LOT of rock bands in my life from Cream. The Doors, the Byrds, Led Zeppelin, the Allman Brothers Band, Elvis, to not so well known. Hearing Band Maid a few years ago restored my love for what I believe rock and roll should be. These young women are amazing musicians with talent, enthusiasm, cohesiveness, professionalism, and most importantly, pure joy from playing before a live audience. I've been to two of their live concerts (in my old age) and loved every second of each concert. I plan to attend more when they announce their tour schedule this next year (hopefully with more concerts in the U.S.). If they do, I hope to see both of you at at least one of the events.

It's actually one of their older sngs from the 2017 album 'Just Bring It' which was their first full album. That album was when Kanami established herself as composer (9 of 14 songs) and Miku as Lyricist.

This is an older song although a great live version. You've just barely touched the surface. I suggest you watch NO GOD live for something crazy and to see and hear how crazy good Misa, the bassist, really is. I would also suggest DICE/HATE? live from Lalapalooza 2023 to catch them in a more "raw" setting. For me they're the best rock band on the planet.

Kanami Tono is a spokesperson for PRS guitars in Japan. She's a huge fangirl for Carlos Santana and she figures if PRS is good enough for Carlos, a PRS is good enough for her. Miku Kobato plays Zemaitis exclusively and they built a signature "Flappy Pigeon" model for her with MOP inlays and aluminum faceplate. The PRS guitars are famous for their fretboard seagull inlays and Miku had Zemaitis build her a guitar with pigeon inlays on her fretboard. Let's just say that Miku has a 'thing' about pigeons. MISA exclusively uses Black Cloud 5 string basses and Black Cloud have recently introduced a Misa signature model. Misa tends to select the distressed finish models. These ladies are gear heads and it's been fascinating to watch their selections of amplifiers, guitars, and pedals over their career. Costumes are a big part of the Japanese music entertainment landscape. Just as there are some Western acts that don't use costumes and some who do (KISS, GWAR, Slipknot, Ghost), Japan has that same mix of costumed, not costumed, and in between. Man with a Mission wear Wolf's heads (?), Versailles wears Anime inspired and outrageously flamboyant costumes reminiscent of the French revolution era aristocracy. You could do a 2 hour long documentary on the evolution of X Japan's costumes and hair styles. Hanabie seems to be constantly changing their costumes and they're always in top fashion. Band-Maid's maid costumes have evolved from the cheesy knee stocking maid dresses of the early days into the elegant costumes they now wear.

I'm 77 and a die-hard rock fan and Japanese female bands have become the keepers of the flame for rock as we used to know it. I've seen them three times and I haven't enjoyed a show so much in over 50 years. Live they match up with some the best ever to play. My favorite shows prior to them were The Young Rascals and Blood, Sweat and Tears in NYC in 1967 and The Doors at the Whiskey a Go Go in LA in 1968 . If you want a more in-depth look at their musicianship check out the instrumentals, the live official video of "Onset" and the MV of "From Now On", they are just magic. Their catalogue is just full of amazing compositions and after 10 years they are at the top of the heap when it comes to all sub-genres of rock. Frontwoman Saiki Atsumi a/k/a Sai-Chan has built up her presence to one of the best there are today. They are a dish best served LIVE !!!! They have grown exponentially since "Thrill" exploded on the scene, and they are just getting better and better.

I would say that Band Maid has a bigger audience worldwide than in their home country. From what I’ve heard, Band Maid is a “little fish in a big pond” because the rock and metal scene is so competitive in Japan. And still they put 15,000 people in Yokohama Arena. I’m an old cat. Trust me that these little Maids are bringing something special. And they are all sincerely nice people to boot. That makes loving their work even easier. Let’s not waste valuable time. Band Maid has seven studio albums under their belt and without hyperbole, arguably 50 or more legitimate hit songs. Amongst them there are 4 instrumental tracks. The most hard hitting one is what I recommend for you: “From Now On,” official music video They don’t just write catchy songs and dress cute. They bring it. 🤘🏽 Enjoy!

"Warning" MV (A hard rock gem) - "Rinne" MV (some may call metal) and then at the other end of the spectrum "Daydreaming" MV (what I call one of the best Rock Ballad's I've ever heard) - all as equally as impressive as each other as is the rest of their catalogue. Not many bands like this where you can have, at a minimum, 40 songs in your top 5. A greatest hits album from these guys would just be their entire back catalogue.

Where would we take you? You really can't miss. They have 140 plus songs, and they don't do bad ones. That said, they are so all over the place genre wise that you can't really say you know their sound until maybe 20 songs. They do beautiful ballads, power ballads, very hard rock/metal, and hybrid prog/metal, entire acoustic shows which are completely different sounded and just perfect - and everything else. This was actually an older song, but a new performance. We Maidiacs love this one. You don't get the crowd noise with this video, but if you were in that crowd the singalong parts would be insanely loud - their live shows are an experience and they do TONS of audience participation. If you want to listen to something that was written more recently, I'd suggest their instrumental track From Now On, or with vocals No God. Also, I second all other suggestions made by others - because they're all correct. The more recent stuff though can take multiple listens, because there is so much instrumental craziness going on you won't be able to take it all in at once.

The little gesture by Saiki at 3:22 is to the mother of bassist MISA..She was in the audience on the rail of the walkway which circled the center section...Miku "high five"s her during her song "Rock In Me"..and then during "Choose Me"..MISA got to walk round to her and play right in front of her...Also to the left of the center walkway (if your stood on it) was members of the band "Lovebites"..BTW....I was at this concert..flying out from the UK to be there.

My first recommendation is Onset live, Without Holding Back, From Now On. You can get to know their diverse musicality. What you have seen is the tip of the iceberg, and you do not know anything yet. These songs should serve as guideposts. Another recommendation for BAND-MAID beginners is Domination Live, Freedom Live, and Play Live. Because they are a very skilled live band. I think these three songs will make you feel that you are the 6th member of BAND-MAID. Please watch Alone for the history of BAND-MAID. This is a song about their independence and the first song they wrote. It is a declaration that everything starts from here. I love the genius Kanami's guitar solo in this song.

Actually they're more popular outside of Japan. Like other said this is an older song, but where it shines is crowd participation with call and responses, which is kind of shame they didn't mix the crowd in well on those parts of the song. So this song is actually from their 2017 album Just Bring It, my personal favorite. As good as their performance is themselves, this video is missing the sixth member of this song; the crowd. Unfortunately, the audio engineers for the show did not setup or mix in the crowd audio for this track where they sing the chorus. As someone who has seen them play this live (Chicago 2022), I can attest the crowd is as loud as the band and it sounds absolutely fantastic in person. This video doesn't do the song justice IMHO. The best concert that captures the live feel of the band are their Line Cube Shibuya videos. I highly suggest Domination LIVE, Play Live and Freedom Live as those really give a better idea of what a Band-Maid show is like.

It's the 9th song in the Zepp Tokyo LIVE Concert. If you don't want to go there Joel Roadie just did a reaction to it. This version has a little more technical run down than the run up in the old one, but that is more dramatic and has more impact.
