There are no solos in BandMaidLand. At first, it seems like trading solos, then you notice a pounding Gorilla, then you hear a chugging Pigeon. What an instrumental quartet.

YES! It tends to trigger me when they "solo" when it's usually a "duet", with them leading with Akane backing it up. All of them, even Saiki, have true "solos", and they're awesome, but I feel they're disrespecting Akane, and Miku when applicable, when they overlook their work in the background.

I like the mention of Miku as being the glue holding the whole thing together. Surrounded by individual superstars, Miku effortlessly provides that extra deep aural colour that enriches everything it touches. And as ever, thanks to Bob for shining a light on details that can be hidden from we non-musicians !

Akane and her ability to play poly rhythms is one of the things that makes her one of the best drummers currently. Not because she bashes the heck out of her kit which she does do at times, but her ability to play several different rhythms with each limb at the same time. And this call and response was brought back. They used to play it back in 2017 but they dropped it to switch the focus to other songs. They brought it back because it is so loved by us fans. I love how the Ladies will switch things up to make their concerts fun, entertaining, and fresh. And that sound was in their backing track. It's not the same as in their older set, but it is similar. So they updated it for this concert. And as many of us say, Band-Maid is their own genre.

I don't really like drawing comparisons between musicians, they each have their own style and their own experience but, as a bass player myself, each time I hear Misa launch into one of her amazing solos I hear small echoes of the late Chris Squire in her tonality and phrasing ... she's an absolute machine.

Great reaction and analysis (as usual) Bob !! As many already said below, this track was part of the Band-Maid 10th anniversary concert at the Yokohama Arena Okyu-ji in November 2023. You’ll be surprised to know that 3 members of Lovebites (Haruna, Asami and Midori) were in attendance at this show!!! They posted their comments on their Twitter (today X) accounts and also a picture of them outside the venue and a picture of the stage during the show, with Miku on the screen. In her post Haruna wrote ”we've performed together twice in the past at festivals and went out to eat ramen with AKANE”. I think these 2 great bands, in their own different musical genre, they have great respect for each other !! Band-Maid and Lovebites forever!!

What more is left to say that hasn't been said over and over again about Band Maid. I feel that they are a true unicorn when it comes to rock of any sub-genre there is. And what you were saying about Kanami's solos and group's solos in general, is correct. I think every one of these solos are specifically written and scripted by Kanami in her composition and arrangements. She is just that type of a perfectionist that wants everything perfect. I know there might be some slight variations here and there, but everything is so smoothly done and performed that you don't really notice it. Kanami is a true musical prodigy/genius/savant. Another spot where you can hear the smoothness and structure of her compositions vis a vis solos is in Freedom. When Akane finishes her solo and instantly segues into Misa's transition to the rest of the song, it's done so smoothly that it has to be scripted. And that's not a criticism, I think it's wonderful. And what else can be said about Akane ???? She is like a cyborg up there, and her fills are both a thing of beauty and pieces of art. The more I watch her, the more I see the same kind of creativity that legends like Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich had, which is really high praise. Ad I have said before, Akane is the High Priestess of the Temple of the Perfect Fill, lol. There aren't enough superlatives to use when Band Maid is under consideration. I first got bit by the rock bug in 1958 and I can truly say that I have never encountered another group like them.

@@bobcieslinski Thanks Bob ! After I first saw Akane's Freedom solo, I went back to older videos of both Krupa and Rich, especially the one where Buddy was playing on a platform that rolled him in a full circle and he continued playing all the way around, even upside down. The film clip is on YT. I've gone back to other drummers from the rock era and only John Bonham had similar creativity. I don't know if you remember the singer Karen Carpenter from the 1970's, she had an amazing voice but was also one of the best female drummers ever. There is a video of her playing along Buddy Rich that is just priceless. Keep up the good work with your reactions.

Besides the incredible playing I think some of the camera shot choices done in the final editing are great. There’s a sequence before the solo/duet section where you see Saiki owning that stage extension then Kanami bobbing her head in a relaxed fashion (indicating she could do this all day lol) and then a huge smile on Akane’s face after that fill. Another one that goes by very quickly is as the camera pans out from the end of the Kanami/Misa duet you see Akane on the big screen behind them looking back, again with a huge smile. I wish other videographers would take note on how to do a live performance video. Years ago I took words like “the best” or “greatest” or a singular “favourite” out of my vocabulary. I think words and phrases like that place limitations on us. However, Band-Maid often challenges those decisions lol! 😊

Absolutely agree, MISA is a beast.🎸 🤘🤘 Or, if you prefer, barefoot assassin.😁 Band Maid and The Warning played a show together , in Japan, about a week and a half ago. TW went over there a week or so early. The result was a new song, a collab between the 2 bands. Song is called "Show Them" , and will be on the upcoming Band Maid album. The 2 band played it live at that concert, with all 8 ladies on stage, 2 drum kits, 3 guitars, 2 basses, dual lead vocals with Dany and Saiki. There is a 30 second or so teaser clip of that song on the Band Maid socials, that can be reacted to. DO NOT react to the fan cam footage of the entire song, you will most likely get a COPYWRITE STRIKE if you do. Many reactors that did react to that footage, DID get a STRIKE. When you come back to Band Maid, if you want to see where they came from, try "Thrill", the song that got them going and saved the band.

Those "impromptu" "conversations" that the Maid's had really weren't impromptu. I'm sure they practiced that during rehearsals. Their communications were "what can we do on this song to make it stand out" and then "let's do this" and "okay". I would love to be at one (or many) of those rehearsals when they did that.

This is clearly the case, given that you can see an earlier live version of this song from a concert a few years back where they do a similar trading off (or compare the Lollapalooza version of Hate? to the Yokohama version). That said, what's interesting is that they evolve these additions to the compositions over time. Reminds me of how, for instance, Rush evolved the extended tag at the end of Closer to the Heart in concert so it changed a lot over the 40 years they played it live in concert.

By the way, there is a video of a live performance called "Band maid Spin off show" on the channel "bandmaid fan videos" that was held as part of the 10th anniversary. At 1:10:25 out of 1:42:10, we enter the song "HONKAI(本懐)" from MISA's cool solo. This is a song that makes MISA's drive shine brightly, so I recommend listening to it. This was at the great Yokohama Arena, the venue where in March 2024 I saw Babymetal on back to back days. Roughly a week earlier, I saw BAND-MAID at Zepp Yokohama, a much smaller venue that I believe holds around 2000 - 2500 people. While their Yokohama performance lasted twice as long, at Zepp we still got the same energy, the same smiles, the same charisma, and the same professionalism. The same can be said for when I saw them a second time at EX Theater Roppongi in Tokyo, though there was a different feeling in the air for that show because The Warning was there as well. There's an official video coming of BAND-MAID and The Warning's duo song, but there's no release date yet.

I think what you were hearing is Miku's harmony, although there is a synth track that plays just after. This is the best demonstration of the new Saiki who has emerged over the past couple of years, more confident, even more charismatic and totally connected vocally. Misa was just so... Misa (the word Misa should by now be an adjective that describes bass playing at that level). Finally Kanami and Akane channelling Gilmour and Mason was just superb. Not one of my favourite songs of theirs until I saw the live versions, the previous live from Zepp was really good but this is the honed to perfection version.

Always seems comparisons between BM and LB, but they are two completely different bands (btw, you didn't compare, it's others in the past). Band Maid is much more towards rock, and they often have those repeatable lyrics the crowd can sing along with. Miku was musically the weakest member, but she has learned the guitar and has become a solid rhythm player and back up vocalist. She's also good in her solos as long as the song is fairly soft as she doesn't have Asaki's power. Just another great song by them!

The main difference between this bass and guitar call-and-response and the one they perform in HATE? is that here Kanami makes the call on guitar and MISA makes the bass response, whereas in HATE? it is the other way round. Akane, of course, provides the subtle but necessary drumwork. PS As I did with HATE?, I also isolated Akane's drums on this performance - it's subtle work but she gets to let rip as they close the breakdown! Saiki is overexcited in this song. She stops singing and instead scream out some words. I never heard her do anything like it before.
