I uswd to find myself disliking and even hating homosexual relationships in movies but was real confused since I'm always happy to see them in real life. I realized it's been because hollywood gay couples are always having their relationship at the expenses of women which I'm so glad it's not here. Their relationship isnt based on how persecuted they are, its not focused on how they must be with women, it's just about how incredibly in love and perfect they are for each other.

It is a form of flight response without physically running away. Reptilian brain adapting to social situations perceived as threatening on some level. Insecurity is a form of fear and fear of any sort tends to trigger a survival response... school aged kids especially learn quickly that lying is a natural response to that survival response instead of fighting and potentially making a social situation more catastrophic. Beating the tar out of a kid is usually seen as antisocial behavior, so most kids lie instead.

this show and these two make the case for normal - for the lack of a better word - representation. they never let you forget Holt's gay, or that Kevin exists. Kevin's mentioned often enough that it's obvious that it's deliberate. their affection and flirtation is also depicted. they've gone through more normal couples stuff than Jake and Amy. just a normal couple who happened to be queer/gay. that's all we want. Kevin's indulgence of Holt's 367(?) paintings of the same rock is akin to Amy's indulgence of Jake's Die Hard fetish and Jake's indulgence of Amy's binder obsession. and both Holt and Kevin are universally loved by the BK99 fandom. like it'll be a riot if you're not their fan and still watch the show. why can't we have this all the time. just a normal and incredibly boring, yet sincere and sweet queer couple who also happens to be interracial (plot twist). f*ck!

You put it perfectly, I absolutely love how Brooklyn Nine Nine portrays Holt, Kevin and also Rosa. In a lot of movies or shows they throw in someone who's gay just for that to be their entire character while B99 just so perfectly depicts actual characters with actual arcs who are openly gay/bi (which of course doesn't exclude their sexuality from playing a big part of who they are and the struggles they've had to face). It's simply the perfect way of representation and more shows should do it like that.

YES. And the show is very honest about the persecution/prejudice they've had to go through, especially Holt as gay and black man. It influences his character in his goals to do what's right, and it's affected how he processes what goes on around him, but it's not his ENTIRE personality. Holt and Kevin are dynamic, three dimensional characters and I adore them wholeheartedly

My son and his partner have been together for almost a decade. They own their own house, new cars, and both own their own businesses. They likes are not even similar but yet they are so calming to each other's problems and needs. I have watched them flourish and could not be more proud. My son had me out walking their parade in Austin as I was and am so proud of him. They make it no secret to anyone that they are together. My son grew up in liberal Boulder, Colo. where I am from. I worried when we came to TX but it is a problem in areas but by being open they have had no problems. They vacation and cruise together and haven't had any problems. I am thankful not to have a daughter in law to contend with. Communication is strong for them and they don't hold anything back. I'd love to see Rosa and Holt therapized. Also Amy and Holt. Jake and Charles. Mike and Sully. Terry and Holt. Just a whole series of the relationships. You should make a series out of B99, there's so much great stuff to cover. Like Jake's entire chaotic life, what I think is the epitome of healthy masculinity that is Terry, and the most of everything about Rosa because I need input on her character. Also, the Holt/Wunch rivalry is something that, even if the video is vague and non-specific for some reason, would just be incredibly fun to see your opinion on.

I have tried it before and it was one of the most uncomfortable things I've ever tried because of my claustrophobia. Which I told him many times that I dont like it. But everytime we met up he kept bringing it up. I agree, you should try new stuff with your partner, but if your partner already knows that they don't like something because they told you. Just don't stop, especially if your partner is neurodivergent.

I love their relationship & so many times when they have those sweet, tender moments in the show, I tear up a little because it's so great to see a wonderfully written gay couple. A lot of people in my life growing up were gay but there wasn't representation like there is today. It makes me happy to see that changing & becoming more inclusive. I love the characters in B99, Parks & Recreation, & The Good Place. The story arcs for all of them are so well written & show the character growing & becoming a better person without completely changing who they are. I would love to see more videos about the different friendships & relationships in B99, as well as the ones in Parks & Recreation & The Good Place. Or breakdowns of how each character grew over the course of the show.

My loved ones get annoyed that I "ruin" TV shows by analyzing them to death, so I'm so glad to know that others are also interested in the value this kind of analysis offers. Also thrilled to discover that another being has already done the work of bringing this kind of thing to life with clarity, professionalism, and penetrating insight. What do you do in the case when you need to defend someone you love from someone else you love. My dad can get frustrated with my mom easily and sometimes he ridicules her. He has a very short-temper and a high-stress job that leads him to lash out. Sometimes he will imply some rude things about her intelligence and my mom has told me it hurts her. I even notice that some of the things that he says to her have rubbed off on me and my 3 younger siblings and we will say similar things to her. I am working on being kinder to her. I am 21 years old, so technically an adult, but I am still their child so I'm not sure if my parents will consider me intervening inappropriate. I don't know if I am in the right position to tell my dad how he should treat my mom, but I also hate it when he talks to her like that and I want to say something. What is your opinion on this?

I would tell him in private when he's calm. It's important for you to speak up and for him to hear it from you. Worst case scenario: he doesn't stop and he's upset you said something. Best case scenario: this changes everything.

@@MendedLight That makes sense and I think he will listen. He is reasonable most of the time. He just can say the wrong things when he is stressed or frustrated. Thank you very much for the advice.

I love the way Brooklyn 99 wrote their LGBTQ characters. It never felt like they were 'othering' them or not fully fleshing out the characters. So many shows write queer characters like they don't have a full personality, just an orientation. And the straight characters get to have full personalities. Brooklyn 99 did it right.

Brooklyn 99 has some really healthy relationships. Jake and Amy are also a really great and healthy relationship. Another great and healthy relationship involving a gay couple is Alec and Magnus from Shadowhunters. And a great example of an unhealthy relationship is Matt and Gabi from Chicago Fire.

Not wanting to stand up for my former husband was actually a warning flag for me - it was part of what made me realize we weren't the right fit for each other. We disagreed on certain things that showed me I wasn't on the same team as him. With my current husband, we ARE on the same team and I WANT to stand up for him because I believe in him in a way that I never did my ex. Don't get me wrong, my ex is a good guy. But he's good as a friend, not as my life partner.

I'd like to nominate a show for a episode about PTSD, in particular as it deals to school shootings. there was a good Canadian cop drama awhile back called 19-2, that did an amazing job depicting a school shooting. at the end of the episode (S2E1 "School"), you can see the shock and ptsd setting in with the characters as they arrive back at the locker room, and come down off the adrenaline high. two years later, they return to the school, (S4E4, "Labour Day", **i think**) and there they are, not seeing or hearing the students around them, but reliving the empty hall, the sound of gunfire, screams, and confused radio dispatches. its only for a few minutes, but it's really powerful, and one of the best depictions of PTSD i've ever seen.

What are your thoughts on one half of a couple making their dislike of an activity very obvious? Especially when the other half of the couple is deeply into it? I'm dragged to a lot of things and try to seem like it's at least tolerable, but my husband always seems insanely bored at functions that I bring him to. Is it dishonest to pretend you're having a good time?

  • @UchihaKat

Depends on the activity. Sometimes it's important to go to or do things to support your significant other, and you should try not to drag things down when you have to go to things like that for your partner. But if your partner is repeatedly dragging you to an activity you don't enjoy, you two may need to have a conversation about maybe not doing that particular activity together in the future. Go with a friend or whatever.

my fiancé and i have had conversations about this a lot. it always boils down to communication. when he's brushing off something i like (unintentionally and without malice), i bring it up to him and he promised he'd try to be more open about things i like, and he kept his word. i did meet him in the middle to say if he doesn't like something i like, we don't have to watch/do/hear it because he says the same thing to me. he appreciates that i'd be willing to go to church with him just to be around company but he won't hold it against me if i do not want to go (i'm agnostic, he's on that line but goes to church for family and friends). if you feel safe talking with your partner about it, please do talk about it; anything and everything. people are not mind readers and need clear communication. i'd rather be blunt and straightforward than tiptoe with a lie. and if there is something that bonds you two together, make it fun, make it your thing. whether that's tv shows, movies, video games, sports, etc. my fiancé and i have opposite personalities and different tastes, but we bond together by our love of video games and making stories so we do that a lot. we arrange date nights dedicated on writing stories together or just discuss and meme about things. gives us a lot of fun memories that i'll forever cherish. hope this helps ❤
