Sweet racing, but what's the deal with the steering?

As wide as the Tideway is, there's a narrow "lane" of where the water is moving fastest in the middle of the river. Both of them are trying to be in that position to get the maximum speed

I'm going to have my first ever race next week in a single. I am 15, 189 cm, 60kg and I've only been rowing for six months. Any tips for the race?

Go out hard, find a rhythm at 500, breathe at 1000, and wind it up with 500 to go. Try to keep your rate above 30. And relax and row long. Good luck :)

...is this how racing works in Britain? In the US coxswains are supposed to be able to steer....

It's how duelling on the Tideway works. Fight for the fastest line, draw a tactical clash...how badly do you want to win. Plus CUBC will have to deal with similar tactics in the actual boat race so might as well get used to it.

in the US coxswains either go in straightlines or have a slow river that doesn't have a strong current like the tideway. This is the epitome of steering.

Okay those Brookes coaches need to stop egging their crew on on the middle of the fixtures. They've done it in most every fixture against the blue boats I've seen and it's very unprofessional and unsportsmanlike.

FuzzyWuzzyHadHair What you don’t hear or see is that Oxford and Cambridge coaches have done the exact same with their own boats over the years. I’ve personally heard both Sean Bowden and Steve Trapmore screaming at their crews mid-race and I can’t see what is unsportsmanlike about coaches trying to get the best out of their athletes in a training fixture.

@@harrybrightmore1164 as long as it's not just brookes doing it then it's fine. Without hearing or seeing it it really gives off an unsportsmanlike vibe.
