Broke the Record for First-Round Knockouts - Shannon 'The Cannon' Briggs

Спорт

Even among the contrasting group of boxing legends, Shannon Briggs is just something else. The last gangster of that glorious era had been altering jawlines since the early nineties, scored a record number of first-round finishes and donned the championship belt in the 2000s. He’s still relevant these days, extravagantly weaving himself into sporting folklore. Today, we recall the high-voltage knockouts and the wild antics of this explosive pugilist that earned him the nickname The Cannon!

This was a very instructive video for me. I only previously knew of Briggs as the guy Lennox beat.. After looking at this video I'm concluding that Briggs was an awesome heavyweight fighter who moved with he speed of a middleweight. A lot can also be said about his climb out of the ghetto and rise to fame. I'm glad I watched the video.

He was really good and had explosive power. Unfortunately he became known for his antics more than his fighting prowess. There’s a reason why he never held a major world title against major opposition. When he finally won the WBO title it was against lesser competition. His record was unfortunately padded full of opposition he was remarkably better than, so it was hard to gauge where he lined up. Every time he faced Class A competition he could never convert a win.

Out of Shannon Briggs's 68 PRO fight career = 60-6-1-1, KO's 53 career - Only 8 fights are against legit top opposition on paper worth talking about! Briggs made a career of fighting journeymen and tomato cans level of opponents. Only 1 fully legit victory, where Briggs was behind on the score cards and near exhausted managed to stop Siarhei Liakhovich in final 30 seconds in the 12th round for the WBO world heavyweight title. 1. A mega GIFT decision over 49 year old "Big" George Foreman where Foreman won 10 of 12 rounds easily + broke Brigg's nose and yet they robbed the legend. Briggs ran away from Foreman all night and won 2-3 rounds with a weak margin. That was a disgusting robbery as Briggs made nothing to deserve a victory. 2. Briggs was knocked-out by Lennox Lewis in 5 rounds. 3. Francois Botha did the better fight and clearly was snubbed out of a victory with Briggs given a gift draw. 4. Lost a UD to untested Jameel McCline, a fight Briggs should have won over, but gave up in. 5. Was out-boxed completely by Sultan Ibragimov as he lost evrey round with larger margins. 6. Ray Mercer was an old, pale shadow of his warrior self of the 90's to earliest 00's. 7. Was out-boxed completely by Sultan Ibragimov as he lost evrey round with larger margins and Briggs had near desperate tried to avoid Ibragimov before with false claims of injury, illness and delaying. Briggs did not want to fight his mandatory WBO challanger. 8. Was completely and brutally destroyed by Vitali Klitschko and had his entire face demolished, something that made him spent a long time in hospital and requiring several surgeries to fix. BTW; Briggs have 3-times in his career been caught using illegal substances (!)
