Your video gives me hope that someday, some of the cover crop seed I've been hand broadcasting will actually come up. I've got about 1-3/4 acre of empty field (not bare soil, just standard field grasses and weeds) and hand broadcast 50 or 60 pound of various cover crops into it in early spring (trying to aerate the soil and build up organic material). It's been a bit over 2 months now and, as far as I can tell, nothing's come up. I'll try again this fall with an overwintering mix and see what happens.

Thanks for watching, i had vaious fields i have overseeded since this video was made, sprout randomly throughout the year and even the following year. Overseeding is an expensive way to plant the seed because a lot goes to waste but it is my only option because i dont have a seed drill. Good luck!!

Thank you for sharing your experience! We just moved to an acre in the Texas hill country that had had way too many goats who ate ALL the grass (neighbor said there hadn't been grass on our property in 9 years! ) so I've been tossing out everything to try to get something growing in all patches of the yard. We had ok luck with some patches of white Dutch clover (my kids found 4, 5, and 6 leafers all spring) and crimson clover but our backyard ducks and 3 geese ate it up and it died all the way back when our 100° summer hit in May. About 6 Buckwheat plants came up from the 5 lbs I broadcast. Not a single black oil sunflower from the 40 lb bag sprouted. I tried a pasture mix from Seeds and Such and many of the grasses have come up but none of the clovers, including yellow sweet :( . We're looking into winter cover crops to help the soil and radish and turnips seem like a good idea but many of our patches are bare rocky clay spots where seeds won't stick or sprout. I've been broadcast seeding by hand on wet days to try to get seeds to stick and stay but it hasn't been successful. When you till and plant a field, do you rake the turnips in? Also, what are the bluish flax like flowers?

Thanks for watching!!! Also check out my tik tok channel I have some more recent videos of another field I planted with winter cover crops. In the video you watched all I did was broadcast. I have a pretty bad germination rate doing so. I also recommend buying junk round bales of hay and rolling them out to add some compost to your soil. I have even sprinkled seed then rolled the bales on top of it. It doesn't get you any immediate growth but down the road it will help your soil.

This is awesome! Please, how specifically did you start this field? Did you say mowing in spring? What was there growing before? Then broadcasting seeds by hand? Did you incorporate the seeds somehow into the ground? Or maybe you broadcast and then mowed, so the mowed stuff was over the seeds? Thanks a lot

Ordered some seeds from Amazon, got two of my kids and and we walked around and just threw the seeds out by hand while the grass was short. Didn't do anything other than that. Probably could have has a lot more germinate if we tilled or disc'd the pasture first but I just wanted to overseed.

Greg Judy was talking about a farmer.. who just for giggles broadcast hundreds of different seeds in a 5k acres field... just to see what happens 🤷‍♂️

I do it yearly, check out my tik tok channel for the latest field I did. I do plan on doing it more than once a year this year. I found a new source for seeds that is local to me and a lot cheaper than Amazon. This year I did buy some food plot seed for hunting. And tried it out. Only issue was the first frost killed a lot of it. Only wheat and rye growing now

That sounds like Gabe Brown in North Dakota. His whole farm is 5k acres. He broadcasted lots of seeds for fun when he finished planting cover crops and had leftovers in the seed bags.

This was a couple years ago so pardon my bad memory but I believe I spread 10 lbs of purple top turnips and 10 lbs of Daikon radishes. That pasture is probably 2-3 acres. On a different pasture just a few weeks ago I tilled the pasture this time and spread 50lbs of wheat 50lbs of annual rye and 5 lbs of brassica mix which is turnips and radishes. And 20 lbs of winter peas. Check out my tik tok channel to follow along how this goes. The peas don't look like they will grow I didn't drag the field to bury the seed so I don't think they will take

You need a new camera. The bit rate is so slow that it really messes with my eyes when you pan around.
