Last spring I had a fair amount of turnips remaining from the winter and pondered what to do with them. I had the idea to try an experiment. I grated the turnips on the course part of a cheese grater and prepared them exactly as I would sauerkraut. They are better than sauerkraut with just a touch of that spicy/horse radish zing. Highly recommend turnipkraut!

I'm so southern. I love turnips, root and greens. I sometimes use the root (or rutabaga) and potato to make soup. A little fatback, salt and pepper, and a bit of cream all mashed up together. So yummy, especially with cornbread. Take this idea and run with it. Thanks, brother. All blessings in His Name. 🙏
That's a beautiful cover crop and them are great looking turnips with the roots. I used to turn my chickens loose in the turnip patch and wow man did I have some good eggs. When I was younger like you folks, I used to plant a chicken garden with all type of greens tall and short and turn my chickens loose in it during the right seasons and I even planted some herbs for them to peck on. I never had a sick chicken.

@@calisingh7978 Chickens eat almost anything. I've seen them eat raw pasta that had been soaked in water maybe 30 minutes. The book would be short if it named the things they can't eat. 😊

I am working on a chicken garden today, for my newly acquired chickens! Beets, herbs, spinach… what do you recommend? I have all sorts of seeds. I got the rest of my “human” garden in yesterday. 😃
Awesome! It should also be noted that our local food pantries which help the less fortunate are _always_ in need of fresh produce. If we happen to have productive crops which we cannot fully use, regardless of what they may be, there are people who would be grateful to have them. Eat them, share them, store them, and if you still have some left over, donate them to a local food pantry charity.

Prolific turnips‼️ Thanks for showing us that a cover crop can also provide real food.
That is a beautiful garden, nothing beats chicken manure for raising a garden.
Those are some beautiful turnips! Thank you for all the encouragement. May our Abba Father bless you and yours!
Beautiful turnips! Very nice. 😊 Great tip about harvesting - twist & pull. Thanks!
The joy on your face while standing in the garden is inspiring. My Irish husband loves turnips. They are pretty tasty. Gardening should be taught in schools. They yak a lot about conservation but do nothing. It’s called home economics. It’s good for all to know. God is good. Stay well. ❤️👍🏻💪🏻🖖🏻🙏🏻🙋🏼♀️🐾🐾🐾
I'm encouraged brother! The Most High will provide a place for me and my wife to start a garden this spring/summer. Praise The Lord

Wow. I'm encouraged by this. I'm in Senegal and I'm having some real difficulty planting veggies that aren't local, seeds I brought from the US. I did, however, plant some turnips and they sprouted right up so I'm really happy to see that they have more benefit than I thought. Thank you.
I just came across your channel and had to subscribe ❤. We are in Pennsylvania and trying to grow some things. It's been a struggle because we are not spring chickens but we are getting it done a little at a time.
I really want my simple garden to be this organized. It's currently a bunch of haphazardly planted vegetables in the corner of my yard.

Awesome harvest…for sure..Thanks for the encouragement…Salute!!!🍃🍃🍃
I live in zone 4 and used these last year to try to build soil in some new garden beds. They turned out to be my best producing crop… they grow amazing greens in terrible soil while other plants struggle. And seeds are cheap!
I never thought about using Turnips as a cover crop 🤔 What a great idea!
I love seeing the pride in my boy's eyes. As a fledgling gardener (about five years in now) I love the feeling of a good harvest.

"Food is food." That is the truth. Be thankful for what the Mother provides big and small.
Been growing in dirt for years but never thought to cut them in two . Best idea yet!!
Awesome! It's great to see that more and more people are turning to gardening. Like Geoff Lawton said: "All the worlds problems can be solved in the garden". God bless you and keep gardening and inspiring.

What a beautiful soul!
If you dont have turnips etc planted to build the soil, utilize tree leaves. They mine minerals hundreds of feet down, then drop them onto the soil beneath the tree composting in place. If you want a great seed starter mix, collect leaves, either whole or mulch them with a mower and collect them in the bag. The smaller the pieces the faster they break down. Put them in a black trash bag, spray them with a hose, then tie shut. Poke holes to allow air flow. Depending on temp check after a couple months Makes the most gorgeous additive, smells amazing and is absolutely FULL OF FUNGI. Excellent for trees shrubs vines and flowers and veg.
Thank you for sharing your plants and the word of God

Good stuff bro, and this year, I myself am experimenting with a cover/eating crop, field beans. God bless. ✝✝✝
Nice ❤ Brassicas such as turnips can also be mixed with cereal type cover crops to increase biodiversity on the farm and give added protection against severe weather.

What sorts of cereal cover crops would you recommend for small gardens?
@Tiffanysfarm
Жыл бұрын
@@jeffengel2607 I would recommend winter rye to add large amount of biomass and organic matter to your soil. They are good for severe winter ground cover. You can also use winter rye in raised garden beds.
Matthew 13:31 (KJV) Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: Matthew 13:32 (KJV) Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof. Matthew 22:14 (KJV) For many are called, but few [are] chosen. God bless you!
This is a great idea to plant turnips as a cover crop. I am just going to do that next time I am in the garden.

I plant crimson clover as a cover crop- when I cut it down, I dry it to feed as a supplement for our pet rabbit- now I'm going to try turnips for us!
Btw I have been using alfalfa pellets meant for horses as a mulch side dressing. Could plant it and turn under. Alfalfa and parsley I heard is the most nutritious plants on earth (?) I drink alfalfa dried as herbal tea👍

Absolutely beautiful 😍
I love turnip greens. Mustard greens also. The best tasting turnip greens I've ever had are ones that have been covered in snow. If you want your okra seeds to germinate fast, soak them in gasoline for about 15 minutes. They'll be up in three days. I've tried many ways in over forty years of growing okra and that is the most reliable method I've found. If you ever have a problem with deer eating your produce, string 50lb or stronger fishing line around your garden. Two to three strands starting about two feet from the ground, with the same spacing between each strand. The deer can't see it and it freaks em out.
They are so beautiful, I love the turnip green ❤
Inspiring! Subscribed 👍
