Last spring I had a fair amount of turnips remaining from the winter and pondered what to do with them. I had the idea to try an experiment. I grated the turnips on the course part of a cheese grater and prepared them exactly as I would sauerkraut. They are better than sauerkraut with just a touch of that spicy/horse radish zing. Highly recommend turnipkraut!

I'm so southern. I love turnips, root and greens. I sometimes use the root (or rutabaga) and potato to make soup. A little fatback, salt and pepper, and a bit of cream all mashed up together. So yummy, especially with cornbread. Take this idea and run with it. Thanks, brother. All blessings in His Name. 🙏

That's a beautiful cover crop and them are great looking turnips with the roots. I used to turn my chickens loose in the turnip patch and wow man did I have some good eggs. When I was younger like you folks, I used to plant a chicken garden with all type of greens tall and short and turn my chickens loose in it during the right seasons and I even planted some herbs for them to peck on. I never had a sick chicken.

Awesome! It should also be noted that our local food pantries which help the less fortunate are _always_ in need of fresh produce. If we happen to have productive crops which we cannot fully use, regardless of what they may be, there are people who would be grateful to have them. Eat them, share them, store them, and if you still have some left over, donate them to a local food pantry charity.

If you dont have turnips etc planted to build the soil, utilize tree leaves. They mine minerals hundreds of feet down, then drop them onto the soil beneath the tree composting in place. If you want a great seed starter mix, collect leaves, either whole or mulch them with a mower and collect them in the bag. The smaller the pieces the faster they break down. Put them in a black trash bag, spray them with a hose, then tie shut. Poke holes to allow air flow. Depending on temp check after a couple months Makes the most gorgeous additive, smells amazing and is absolutely FULL OF FUNGI. Excellent for trees shrubs vines and flowers and veg.

I love turnip greens. Mustard greens also. The best tasting turnip greens I've ever had are ones that have been covered in snow. If you want your okra seeds to germinate fast, soak them in gasoline for about 15 minutes. They'll be up in three days. I've tried many ways in over forty years of growing okra and that is the most reliable method I've found. If you ever have a problem with deer eating your produce, string 50lb or stronger fishing line around your garden. Two to three strands starting about two feet from the ground, with the same spacing between each strand. The deer can't see it and it freaks em out.
