As a native New Yorker, those cheese slices are so good. Rule number with pizza in NY is never, ever use a folk and knife. Doing so will tell every New Yorker that you are not from NY. Now these people learning why so many NY style pizzerias exist through out the US. Folding the pizza keeps all the toppings on the pizza. Every time I return to NY I have pizza almost every day.

Eh, most New Yorker's don't really care. Who cares if you're seen as a tourist, the city is filled with tourists. I've lived in NY my entire life and I don't fold my pizza. I have many many times, but I prefer not to. The only pizza I eat with a knife and fork at stuffed pizzas or certain specialty slices that are too messy to eat with your hands.

Do not eat pizza everyday it will clog your arteries and give you a heart attack. I had two stents put in my heart doctor told me that the worst things you can eat or fried foods like french fries or fried chicken and also Pizza especially pepperoni pizza and pastries and donuts. Those are the worst foods for heart disease😢

If anything(and obviously) he has been better after the stents, while still eating pizza a decent amount. I know what you are saying for sure. But, if they wanna pizza everyday, let em eat pizza everyday.🤷🤷

You two did something I never do, eat pizza with no meat on it. I have never had a piece of pizza in my life with no meat on it, and I am 64 years old, so that is a long time. My favorite pizza is, you guessed it, the meat lovers pizza. My favorite pizza is at FireHouse Pizza & Pub in East Peoria Illinois. They make a thin crust meat lovers pizza that is to die for, and it is only $19.99 for a 14 inch pizza. They even have a warning on the menu and the box about that pizza, it says warning addictive, and they are right. I am addicted to it so much I have to get one at least once a week.

I'm a native New Yorker & lived in Manhattan for 20 years, I never thought I would find pizza that rivaled it. However, New Haven, CT(only 83.5 miles away) has some of the best pizza in the US. The big three at Sally's, Pepe's and Modern.among others. In fact, there was a debate on the floor of the US House of Representatives as to who had the best pizza.(between NY and CT). DiFara's in Brooklyn is excellant.

One of the main reasons why NY pizza tastes different than every other place is due to the water. There's another YT video from the Food Theorists that tested it out (with water from various areas) and the NY one did infact come out different (ie better). It has one of the "softest" water in the country (which positively affects the gluten in the dough for pizzas and bagels making them softer and stickier as opposed to tougher). So even if a New York pizza maker moved across the country and opened a NY style pizzeria, it still will taste ever so slightly different because the local water is different.

I have a suggestion. Check out Long Island pizza. It's New York pizza but qualitatively better. I recommend you go to Deer Park Avenue in Suffolk County. Start from the Babylon end of Deer Park Avenue and try one slice from each pizzeria on that stretch of avenue (there are about 8 to 10 pizzerias including an Italian delicatessen). My daughter and I do that once per year and rate each slice - she likes Piazziaola and I like D'Lisa. While you do that, stop at Uncle Guiseppe's in North Babylon (it's and Italian American market). This is also the shopping plaza where Piazziola is located. When you are done with the stretch of Deer Park Avenue, get on the Southern State Pkwy, head east, get on Robert Moses Causeway, and head to the beach. Go to Robert Moses beach and chill out at Field 5. It's a fantastic beach. I refer to it as the poor man's Hamptons.

    (1) Tourists are not going to go to middle-of-nowhere Long Island for pizza. (2) There is no pizza in LI that is better than what you can get somewhere in NYC. And yes, I am from Long Island.

@@mikeymutual5489 I am from LI too and do not agree. You might be able to make a point about, say, boroughs not named Manhattan have equally good pizza but that's about it. And while LI is, as you say, "middle of nowhere", we have beaches far better than anything offered by NYC (and I am deliberately excluding Jones). Furthermore, the seafood. Sure, there is City Island but it pales in comparison to what is on the Island. And then there are the delis. And, once again, there's a reason why Long Islanders do not miss those in NYC as they are, at worst, equally good. A compromise I can make with you is Long Beach. You can stay at Allegria (which is on the beach), access, by foot, great delis (e.g. Lido), the best pizza (Gino's), the beach, an awesome boardwalk, and quickly Uber to two of the best seafood restaurants in the NYC metro area (Pete's and Jordan Lobster farm), as well as easily access the LIRR if you need an NYC fix (but why would you?). Maybe you might want to go to midtown for a decent family style Italian restaurant (Tony's Di Napoli) but, once again, why go to Manhattan for that when all of that stuff is on Long Island. There's a reason why Long Islanders seldom go to "The City" after age 27. Any of the culinary delights common to the NYC/ LI area is on the Island, and NYC is a headache. And, once again, when it comes to seafood, pizza, and delis, NYC is, at best, equal to the Island. You should know this since you are from Long Island, correct?

You compared apples to oranges. Your deep Chicago and Detroit pizza's had pepperoni and sausage and the NY was just cheese and/or different toppings. More grease w/ pepperoni/sausage. You can make a frozen pizza great by adding extra pepperoni, cheese, black/green olives, bacon or anything else. $4-7.50/slice when you can make a whole for $10.00. We have 2 great pizza restaurants in Apopka FL, Rosati's, deep dish and Jet's, Detroit. You're looking at over $20.00 for a small/2 maybe 3.

It is always a good idea to stick with a basic cheese slice when comparing pizzas. However, you should always get a slice of pepperoni (NY's favorite topping) as well, so see how well they do that kind of slice. So yes, you would have to get two slices at every stop! Of course, if you are still hungry, you could also try a slice of the square ("Sicilian") pizza to see how they do that as well!

To Me a (Chicagoan) Comparing New York thin crust to Detroit pan or Chicago deep dish is like apples to oranges. So I look at it like this, each is it's own art form. So if you grew up and all you knew was water-color paintings, the first time you saw something painted in oil, you'd be surprised maybe think the paint was too thick or the colors too rich. Likewise could be said if that scenario was reversed. So good pizza is a celebration to the art form of pizza. Pizza is an American thing. Yah they do it in Italy now, but did they before immigrants came to America? Or did this art form return from America?

The coal fired ovens are providing a crispier more tender pizza because they’re cooking at a higher temperature than the gas fired ovens are. Still hotter, are the wood fired ovens , when you try Vera Pizza Napolitano, it will be crispier and more tender because of the higher temperature than coal. Then as you decrease in temp you get thicker and crunchier/ chewier till you wind up back at Chicago .

As opposed to Chicago and Detroit-style pizza, NY pizza is more about simplicity. The best NY pizza combines an amazing bread crust with just enough fresh sauce and cheese so everything works in harmony. It could be considered "street food." which hearkens back to its food ancestor in Italy (with some New World changes). In fact, thin crust pizza (like NY pizza), is the only type of pizza in the U.S. that is directly related to the original dish in Italy (which you can also get in NY).

I 1:21 , the Pizzaiolo am back here to educate. The reason the pizza was dry on the bottom... not greasy... for a few reasons 1) pan is very flat. Not nearly the oil put on the pan prior to laying out the dough 2) New York Style pizza is made with All purpose flour. (most popular brand... Trump's All-Purpose) lots of bromate that allows the stretch to occur. with less hydration, there is no need to put in olive oil. Let it self-rise and as long as the dough is covered, not much oil is added as the dough builds up gluten 3) NY style... you'll notice a little gray outer band... that is due to malt....to prevent it from tasting like a cracker...a quick drizzle of oil is added before and even after the pie is cooked... if it isn't added...then you have a very dry pizza crust 4) Extra oily ingredients such as pepperoni, sausage or ground beef on a very thin crusted pizza will exhibit the grease 5) cheese that is already shredded in the package comes with an "anti-caking agent" ...which is (believe it or not)a plastic...that causes a grease pool upon melting. Hope I helped😉👍

The reason it's not as recognized or popular as NYC, Chicago or Detroit pizza is because New Haven isn't nearly the tourism destination that the others are but their pizza is hands down the best. On a scale of 1-10 it's nearly impossible for Detroit or Chicago style to get above an 8, NYC pizza can get into the low 8's but a good New Haven slice is in the mid 9s.

@@thebritstry No pizza in the world tastes like NYC Pizza. Its the water. Don't forget Jackson Hole Burgers in Manhattan and Queens; try the Eastsider. And Cuchifritos is a Puerto Rican spot in Spanish Harlem. It's a hole-in-the-wall, but the food is great. If you ever venture to Jersey, hit up Harold's Deli in Edison.

New Haven Connecticut, hands down. Sally's, Modern and Pepe's and other joints in the area are as good as it gets imo. New Jersey's got some great pizza as well.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It's great to hear your recommendations for pizza places in New Haven and New Jersey. We actually had a hotel booked in New Haven but were delayed and it then didn't make sense to rush there for a few hours. We will definitely head there in the future.

Don't forget Zuppardi's. And NJ pizza is delicious. I think it's way better than NY pizza.

Best pizza is made fast and hot so the crust is crispy and the toppings are just melted and not baked.
