Welcome back to another exciting episode of The Brits Try! This time, Andrew and Nicola, your favorite British expats living in the USA, are taking on the legendary Chicago deep dish pizza. Join us as we dive into the heart of Chicago’s most iconic pizza establishments and ask the burning question: Is this the best pizza in America?
Pizzeria Uno: www.unos.com/
Pizzeria Uno is where it all began. Established in 1943 by Ike Sewell, this pizzeria introduced the world to deep-dish pizza. The buttery crust, rich tomato sauce, and generous cheese make it a must-visit for any pizza lover.
After trying deep-dish pizzas from Pizzeria Uno, Lou Malnati’s, and Pequod’s, Andrew and Nicola are ready to share their thoughts. How does Chicago’s deep dish pizza compare to other pizzas they’ve tried across America?
Lou Malnati's Pizzeria: www.loumalnatis.com/about
Lou Malnati’s is a family-run pizzeria with a rich history dating back to 1971. Known for their perfectly balanced deep-dish pizzas, Lou Malnati’s offers a cozy and welcoming dining experience. Their pizzas are a testament to Lou Malnati’s dedication to quality and flavor.
Pequod’s Pizza: pequodspizza.com/chicago/
Pequod’s is famous for its pan-style deep-dish pizza with a caramelized crust. Founded by Burt Katz in 1970, Pequod’s has been serving up unique and delicious pizzas for over 40 years. Their Lincoln Park location is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.
Andrew and Nicola have traveled across the USA, sampling various iconic American foods, from massive Tomahawk steaks to authentic Texas BBQ. But today, they're on a mission to explore the deep-dish pizza culture of Chicago, known for its thick, hearty crusts and layers of cheesy goodness. Will the Windy City's famous deep dish pizza live up to its reputation? Watch as we embark on this delicious adventure!

I'm from Chicago and have NEVER understood the debate. There really is no debate. Each type of pizza from anywhere has its merits. My favorite, of course, is Chicago deep dish but I love New York and Detroit style as well. It's kinda like cheeseburgers. Is there such a thing as a bad ine?

I think the debate has value as a fun, friendly rivalry between cities. As long as it's all in good fun, and no one's takin it too seriously, it's just a fun cultural thing for people to engage with. You end up with videos like this series, where people actually go and taste test and compare classic pizza places (or burger places, or hot dog places, etc). Of course, taken too seriously, the debate is meaningless. Which type of pizza is best? That depends entirely on the taste of whoever you ask.
My favorites for deep dish are Giordano’s and Lou’s
I lived in Chicago for 30 yrs. My deep dish go-to is Lou Malnati’s. Only would have it once or twice/ yr. The tried and true is tavern style, cut in squares.

Lived in southern California all my life, and the only actual Detroit-style pizza I've ever experienced was from Little Caesar's. I started making my own and it's so much freakin' better, lol. Especially when the cheese "crown" comes out just right. LC's doesn't even really do the cheese crown, I think they just smash the dough up against the pan near the top to make it thinner and crunchier, but almost no cheese actually runs around the edges.
I love that you did more of these. Pizza culture in Chicago is best explained by the improv saying "Yes, and." Do we eat deep dish? Yes, and do we eat thin (tavern) crust? Yes, and do we like Detroit style? Yes, and do we do Neopolitan? Yes, and do we have walking slices? Yes, and do we have Pizza Puffs? Yes, and do we have Skillet/Old-Fashioned pizzas? Yes, and... Deep dish is best known outside Chicago, but our thin crust (other places call it 'Tavern') is getting better-known.

There is no such thing as bad Chicago pizza. Only less good Chicago pizza. :) We're actually known for two different types of pizza - deep dish and tavern style, which is a thin and crispy square-cut pizza. Most locals will tell you that tavern style is the "real" Chicago pizza and that deep dish is for tourists or occasional splurge.

Being from Chicago, I've only had deep dish pizza a handful of times. That's mostly a special occasion pizza, and for tourists and family that comes from out of town for a visit. Me and my family usually eat thick crust Chicago style pizza cut into squares. That's probably why I like Detroit style as well, and the fact that I have family from Detroit. 😅 The deep dish is cooked with the sauce on top because of the extended time it has to cook because of the thickness, they don't want the cheese to burn.

I love deep dish pizza as a meal and New York Pizza as a snack😃🇺🇸💙
The ingredients need to be layered the in a certain way: Copious amounts of cheese is always the bottom layer to form a water-tight seal and prevent the crust from getting soggy. The most common topping, Italian sausage, is usually applied raw because the pie needs to cook for a long period anyways and precooked sausage can become overcooked. The sauce needs to go on top, again because any other ingredient would scorch cooking for that long. Though the logic is kinda circular, the pizza needs to cook for so much longer than thinner pizzas entirely because it's so thick.
You've had Chicago deep dish pizza. Now you must try the many great varieties of Neopolitan style pizza here in Chicago. Happy travels.
I’m a Lou’s guy myself but I love the burnt crust from pequads. Next time you’re in town try to get the tavern style thin crust. That’s what most of Chicagoan’s eat when they go out for pizza. Deep dish is for when family comes in for a visit.

You guys made me crazy hungry! The crust stays crispy because it's protected from the other ingredients by that layer of cheese. Lots of people think "deep dish" means a thick, bread-like crust, but, as you found out, no. I think Pizza Hut made bready crust famous when they introduced "pan pizza" and people assume that's what deep dish is. I winced each time you said "lasagna" because New Yorkers like to hate on deep dish, likening it to a lasagna rather than a pizza, but they fold their slices in half, making it a sandwich, not a pizza, so what do they know? JK, ALL pizza is good pizza.

I've lived in Chicago since 1956 and I've had deep dish maybe five times. My go to is almost always tavern style, thin crispy crust with lots of cheese and toppings. For Deep Dish I prefer spinach, mushroom, and onion.
Chicagoans eat tavern style pizza, deep dish is a once a year deal for us…
Lou Malnati's is the best. By the way, I usually get their thin. Still buttercrust, but not so filling. Your Pequods was not burnt, that's the carmelized cheese on the crust. Really good, but yeah, I don't want that much bread. And while it is almost as good is Lou's, it doesn't reheat nearly as well the next day.
Ahh you would have loved the Pequod's (Pea-Quads) in Morton Grove IL back in the days with the founder, Burt Katz. Check him out. Burt sold Pequod's and opened another pizzeria aptly named Burt's. While Burt has passed away, the current owners studied under Burt and carry on the tradition. You will find other YT videos about Burt Katz. Deep dish pizza at Burt's is the only one Anthony Bourdain liked.
My favorite thing about Lou's pizza, beyond the single piece of sausage, is that you can taste the wine used to cook the tomatoes.

Lol! thanks for the pronunciation advice.
I have had Chicago style pizza in the Columbus, Ohio area and the restaurant is called Giordano’s. And I have heard that about marmite and Vegemite in Australia. It’s either you like it or you don’t. I really enjoy your videos ❤
I'm a New Yorker living in Chicago and my preference is NY style first, Detroit style (total sleeper) second (obvious potential biases apply). Deep dish is ok if it's the only option but if anything else is available it's what I'm going to go with. The more typical pizza I've had here is similar to NY style 'tavern pizza' which can be pretty good.

please explain why the cardboard pizza is always cheese or pepperoni what are you afraid of more topping. NY pizza is a snack and Chicago is a meal.

@@sychavez7269 You mean that Chicago tavern style is a laughable joke of a snack and NY pizza is a real, authentic product. Try to get it right.

@@sychavez7269 Considering it's an opinion I don't really have to explain. If you prefer deep dish that's fine. And there are a ton of toppings you can get on NY style pizza, no idea what you are on about with that one.
Chicago style is the best 100%!! ❤

Chicago style is really good! Thanks for watching
I was at that same Lou Malnati's a few days ago, and am already craving more. Luckily I live near Chicago so they're all over the place!

I at a lot of Lou Malnati's when I lived in the Chicago area. I never made it to Uno's. My favorite was Gulliver's on Howard street, but they are no longer there. Now thin crust pizza in Chicago is a whole nother discussion.

There is still a Gullivers pizza in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. The son of the Howard Street location runs it there.
I have lived in the Chicago area my entire life and Chicago Style Deep Dish is a acquired taste, but tavern style thin crust is incredibly delicious

Oh, I'm glad you enjoyed your Chicago Deep Dish Pizza experience! Welcome. Pizzeria Uno is a huge tourist attraction loved by Chicagoans, too. Pequod's (Pee-Kwod's) Pizza is a favorite hangout for the locals. The "carmelized" cheese is an acquired taste, though. But Lou Malnati's is like Pizzeria Uno's for "the rest of us" who can't cope with going deep, down into Chicago. Lou opened up in north suburban Lincolnwood in the early 1970's and branched out from there. Wonderful Pizza! I hope two packed your yoga mats! LOL. Cheers.

@thebritstry You're very welcome. Glad you enjoyed Chicago style deep dish pizza. Happy and Safe Holiday week.
Detroit with well-done pepperoni and crispy edges...tough to beat. But Chicago with a full round of sausage under the sauce is pretty spectacular as well.

Thanks for sharing! watch our new Detroit pizza video from Detroit out now!
My favorite over thin crust and deep dish is stuffed pizza. Pretty much deep dish pizza, but on top of the cheese and other “toppings” like sausage is a another (very thin) layer of crust, then the tomato sauce is put on top and baked on. Sooo good! Chicagoans eat thin crust pub/tavern (i.e., cut in squares) pizza the most. Deep dish is more periodic or special occasion pizza. I love Connie’s Pizza the best, but sadly all of the locations except the original were closed. I eat Giordano’s mostly now for deep dish. Somebody probably said this already in the comments. Pequod’s is pronounced “pea-quads” Glad you enjoyed the pizza!

Nicola, we have a thicker version in Chicago as well. It is actually called “stuffed”. Lou’s and Uno’s serve the proper deep dish pizza that we are famous for! Cheers!
