It wasn't just the dunks, the amazingly innovative and creative plays, or the other worldly athleticism. He was an absolutely tremendous defensive player, had more game winning shots than I can count, and had determination like no other. Supremely clutch. So special.

I'm old enough that I watched his whole career. The thing that impressed me most about him was how he constantly worked in the offseason to improve individual facets of his game. He came into the league as immediately being one of the most electrifying players in the league. His game was full of dunks and other highlight plays and he could score against anyone. He then began working on defense and became the best defender in the league as well as best scorer. Later in his career he couldn't get past Detroit in the playoffs mainly because they just beat him up physically to stop him from scoring. So he spent time getting stronger and developed a more physical game himself to compete with them. He was not a good 3pt shooter early in his career (17% rookie year). Midway through his career he specifically worked on that in the offseason. By the time he won his first championship he was shooting in the mid 30s (not the best in the league but good enough defenders had to at least guard him out there). Late in his career when he was not as explosive offensively, he worked on his post game. He developed into one of the best post players in the league and mastered the fadeaway jumper. That shot became almost unstoppable late in his career.

You perfectly encapsulated why so many consider him the GOAT. Skip Bayless refers to Jordan as an extremely talented "over-acheiver". Jordan was the basketball equivalent of when the most intellectually gifted student in class is also the hardest working student in class.

In 87-88 MJ won scoring title (35ppg!), steals title, MVP, All Star MVP, Slam Dunk title, DPOY, recorded over 100 blocks & 200 steals that season (only ever been done 3 times, twice by MJ), was the first player to score back to back 50+pts in a playoff series (vs Cavs). How do you average 35ppg AND win DPOY recording over 100 blocks & 200 steals... that’s pure insanity. I have to say though Dominique was robbed in the 1988 dunk contest, but it was in Chicago so MJ wasn’t losing

ESPN did a 6 or 8 part history of MJ....."The Last Dance"...it was SUPER.....and that is an understatement. I always enjoyed his play and his character (and as a native Angelino, a Laker fan). This MAN is the most intensive person I've ever seen. That series really revealed so much of him that I did not know. Kareem is top scorer at 38,387 in 20yrs Moses Malone 36,928 in 19yrs Labron James 35,283 in 17yrs Kobe Bryant 33,643 in 20yrs Michael Jordan 32,282 in 15yrs Note: Malone, James and Kobe did not play in college. All three went Pro directly from high school. Michael Jordan played 4 years at the University of North Carolina. Plus he missed 2 years to go play baseball. Jordan played for Phil Jackson during all those championship years at Chicago. When MJ finally retired, Jackson went to LA and was Kobe's coach. He says Kobe copied MJs style and was better. I suspect he was just being kind to current star.

Kobe was never quite as explosive as Jordan was in the 80's but under the same offense and sane coach it was easy decision to mimick Jordan if one could. I would say Kobe was more "complete" at 24 or 25 as in developed his offense or copied Jordans.

Great, great reaction... You said something that is so true, which is how things in the past are often overlooked and forgotten... When you look at Michael Jordan, I think his level of of game goes unmatched by anyone else, especially when you consider the era and competition he dealt with... Lebron is one of the greatest player in this now era, but I think. Lebron gets more credit than he deserves.. I think there are a few other players who can challenge Lebron for #2 spot behind Jordan, such as Kobe and Magic Johnson... Try to check out another forgotten in the past phenom, who Jordan was highly inspired by in his younger days as a basketball player... His name is David Thompson at 6'4", who was about two inches shorter than Jordan , but he was probably just as much athletic and dominant on the court as Michael Jordan... His career ended too soon because of severe injury, and they didn't have the medical technology back then like Lebron gets in these times.....

When Jordan took that break in his career to try to play professional baseball it was only one season. He played for the Birmingham Barons in the baseball minor leagues in 1994.I looked up his stats. He played in 127 games and had 154 at bats. His batting average was .202 with 3 home runs and 52 RBI. Those numbers by professional aspects are ok but not spectacular but in his case they were actually pretty amazing considering he was 31 years old and had not picked up a bat and glove since he played in high school and he was batting against professional minor league pitching so guys that were legitimate prospects to play in the major leagues and baseball was what they had focused their entire life on while he had focused on playing basketball his entire life!

@@kabirconsiders Yes some guys are just so naturally athletically gifted. Tim Tebow, who you have probably heard of, since his NFL days have come to an end, is now a minor league player for the Mets. I think he hit a HR on his first at bat. And since he focused entirely on football once he got to college, he had not played high level competitive baseball since high school. If you look at a lot of pro football, baseball, or basketball players in this country, a lot of them in high school played two or three of those sports and then in college focused on one that they wanted to go pro in. Quite a few star football quarterbacks were drafted by MLB teams when they were in high school.

After hearing this one too many times, Jordan went out and shot 6 in a row before giving his famous "I dont know" shrug as if to say, Maybe I CAN shoot the three. And he did this while missing almost three seasons of his athletic prime! : 1985-86 Jordan broke his foot and played in only about 17 games. (22 years old) 1993-94 Jordan retired pre-maturely from the game. (30 years old) 1994-95 Jordan returns to basketball at the end of the NBA season, playing in only about 22 games. Jordan has the highest points per game average of any player in NBA history (30.1 points per game). Kareem has scored the most points in NBA history, which is a record based on longevity. Kareem played 20 years to Jordan's 13. Kareem's average per game was 24.6points per game. Michael was 83.5% from the free throw line. 32.7% from the 3pt line. 3pointers were the closest thing to a weakness, but really his 3 ball was league average. Russel won many title, but yes at a time when there was less than 10 teams in the league. I'll leave a link to something very different. It's an MMA tribute video of Kazushi Sakuraba. The greatest submission fighter ever, arguably the greatest fighter ever and easily the most entertaining fighter ever. One of his nicknames is the Gracie Hunter. given to him after defeating 4 members of the Gracie family who hadn't lost in NHB competition in 48 years. Sakuraba is the only man to ever submit a Gracie in MMA, subbing 2 and forcing a 3rd to throw in the towel. He's beaten 7 UFC champs, 3 kings of Pancrase and 2 Dream GP champs.
