Ah the Choppers running the Jolly Fisherman. Rode on that a couple of times as a kid.

This looks like a chilled out place. All and sundry crossed the tracks after that DMU entering the station!

I'm pleased you approve. It took me all day to film this one, a lot of time festering in Skegness but some nice class 20 thrash was had!

Yes, it was a good day out. EE thrash to Skeg & back with Valenta thrash back home to London!

thank you for this trip down memory line. :) my dad took me to Skeg a couple of times behind pairs of choppers; one occasion, the train started at Derby, the other time it began at Leicester, so i guess the latter would have been in 1993. i also remember doing it with 31 haulage, and finding another 31 from Sleaford to Lincoln on the way back.

The year this vid was taken was the last it ran sadly. I did get back again before the year was out, i shot off after my early turn and got to Skeg in time for them back to Nottingham (bailed out there) but only got the same pair. At least the mileage went up a bit...

Great stuff, so unusual nowadays to see propelling moves which were evidently quite common not so many years ago. Love the 47s too!

Even the Res traffic is now history apart from a few EMU moves to Willesden Railnet.

Thanks for the great video. Sorry to ask what may be a stupid question but i can't see any driver at the beginning, is this train reversing or is there a driver at the front but it's so dirty it's not visible ?

The Guard is at the back, hanging out his door, calling the driver back with handsignals (and possibly a radio), while the driver is on the platform side of 20 132 driving. The class 20s had 2 driving positions, one either side of the cab, class 08/09, 33 & 73's were the same......

How far did those shutters take the carriages? It must only have been a branch line or short hop in miles?? Skegness has bad memories for me, in 1980 I fell out of my pram into a pond in skegness butlins!! Now unfortunately i live next to an ex butlins. (Haven) These are very good videos btw, it's good you are 'digitising' them as the magnetic tape eventually fades. I've worked 35 mm motion picture film and any film with magnetic soundtrack as opposed to optical was a dead duck for sound after being in storage. I would have thought Leicester would have been electrified even then.

No danger of wires to Leicester, even neatly 30 years later. The stock was shunted in to some sidings nearby to run round the engines round.

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus I see. I'm saying this as a passenger. It's a disgrace that such large cities are still fuel hauled. Even poorer countries have single rural lines wired. I suppose it depends on which mp is on the line in Britain.

@@tonyjones9442 you will never see wires to Skeg in your lifetime. We won't even wire busy main lines, the civil service mandarins think the nuclear vapour powered personal rocket packs are just around the corner and trains won't be needed anymore.........

I suppose they couldn't find a scruffier pair of 20s? Nearly as bad as the ex-GWR steam locos in their last years, and they were appalling!

Despite looking scruffy I believe both have been preserved. Although 20087 failed a few years ago, I don't know if it will run again or not.

No, it was a 2 car, its just that we are seeing it via a tele-photo shot of the 20's from the rear coach.

Interesting. They *never* use that platform at Skegness anymore. Its all in tatters and covered in weeds.

Platform 6 and 7 are both signed out of use now. The only remaining platforms in service are 2, 3, 4 and 5. Very sad

The 20’s at the beginning were very really tatty and filthy .

They had been working on the Channel Tunnel construction before coming back to BR. If you look carefully you can see RFS stickers on the locos. A few months later they did get a repaint and happily they keep the liveries they already wore.
