British Rail-Scunthorpe June 1989

A vid for a subscriber now, Scunthorpe. Back in 1989 it was a busy place with lots of freight trains passing and there was also a busy yard at the rear of the Up platform. In this vid we see three class 08's at work in the yard, even in 1989 that was quite something to behold! The passenger trains were in the hands off Sprinters (150 & 156) and the now soon-to-be-gone Pacers (144) while freight workings were in the hands of classes 08, 31, 37, 47 & 56 (all Romanian ones!). All in all a nice bit of history on this one! If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Great stuff. Nice to see a Gronk in action, let alone two of them. Amazing to think how few of them there are now, and how little need there is for shunting in modern railfreight. It may have been inefficient in machinery and man power. But, it was those inefficiencies, shunting, light loco moves, running around etc that made the railways interesting.

It's amazing the amount of traffic and railway operations that we have lost. Even in 1989 i was amazed to see this yard with 3 gronks working at once, the last one seen dropping down behind the station had been working further down the yard while the other 2 were shunting and marshaling trains. Lets hope viewers appreciate the gronks at work, this type of railway action is pretty much history now!

this video is brilliant. It’s great to see locomotives of this era when they aren’t confined to heritage railways. In some ways it reminds me of a nature watch program :D I wasn’t born until the 2000s so I only recognise the sounds of an 08 in an O gauge model, it’s great to watch the real thing rumble about.

That's a great video Soi.... really enjoyed it, thanks ! Never made it to Scunthorpe in my 80s railway travels, pity as it looks fascinating. As other commentators have said, just amazing to see 3 shunters in action and also the hump still being used.... never knew about that, might have paid a visit if I had ! I used to spend a lot of time as a teenager watching freight trains at Millerhill near Edinburgh around 81-84, could watch a busy freight yard all day !

Another top video Soi.. A lost age.. I used to visit Tinsley depot and yard with my dad regularly and that was similar to this..the marshalling yard and hump shunting wagons.. Speedlink etc.. Sadly all gone.. Scunthorpe these days is very empty compared to what it was.. Nice to see lots of varied traction. I remember 56 002 being one of the first of the class to be withdrawn.. Nice to see it alive again here. So the pacers are finally getting withdrawn too. I wont miss those things too much!!! :)

Thanks for your comments, yes i too used to go around Tinsley back in the early 1980s, my Dad & I used to do depot tours with RESL group. I remember how vast Tinsley was, with the huge yards & depot, all gone now........Still, i'm sure a Pacer or two will survive for you to ride on! (Don't forget a 141 exists somewhere...and i have one or two of those on vid when they were still on the main line)

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus me and my dad were part of Resl group too. We had the badge!! There were organised depot tours in the 80s thats right. I remember me and my dad went to Toton one day through a Resl organised event. I got into trouble as i got grease off a class 56 buffer on my gloves..naughty!! We also did some railtours..40 tours mainly as they were coming to and end 83/84 time.. Were from sheffield my dad and me. Used to be great times. 45s on the St Pancras and cross country 47s. The boat train that would split into 2 portions to Harwich. A class 40 on the middle road with the RedBank parcels.. Hsts Dmus the proper old school kind 124s on the manchester cleethorpes. 31/4s on the same route with 4 coaches. 25/40 combo on the pressure tanks.. Great stuff.. Sadly all pacers sprinters pendolinos...the odd hst but no more screaming valentas anymore.. Tinsley depot now an airport and new housing.. The yard still there but small time now..

@@christopherruff8528 Wow! Another RESL'er....I remember we used coaches a lot to get around. Some depot's we got round, other places a BR guy would chat to staff and see if we could all go round or sometime it would be just him to get the numbers and we would observe from a bridge ect. And yes, i do recall a few railtours, indeed they did the last private Deltic railtour, the Deltic Executive on 29 Dec 81, first railtour all on my own, a great day!

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus yes you all got picked up by coach and driven to certain depots.. I was only very young myself anyway... But i remember certain things.. Like being amazed at seeing a class 50 at sheffield. Obviously going back to the southern region fresh from doncaster works after overhaul. Large logo livery cant remember the number sadly.. I got to cab and drive a few feet a 45 peak in sheffield before it went to st pancras fun times. Also got to sit in the cab of a 125/hst with the driver as we approached newcastle over the king edward bridge past gateshead depot.. Me and my parents used to visit my grandparents in Scotland in august school holidays so train ride from sheffield to edinburgh waverley..and return.. 26s27s push pull 477s in scotland.. Just exciting times. I miss it all.. Just not the same these days. The closest thing now is probably a diesel weekend at a preserved railway like the East Lancs etc.. Stuff like that.. Or the odd main line railtour of a certified diesel off the preserved list.. Its nice to reminisce with you Soi.. Thanks for the video memories too.
