At 2:45: it's very common for goalies to go behind the net when the opposing team dumps the puck in, just to control it and make sure a teammate can pick it up. That's what was happening here, except that the puck took a crazy bounce off the glass (must have hit one of the dividers between the panes of glass) and went toward the front of the net instead of behind.

Love these hockey reactions. As a goalie myself I’m biased but I appreciate a great save over most goals in terms of excitement

Amen fellow puckstopper.

As far as athleticism of goalies goes -- just watch their legs for awhile at any point of the game. It's truly unlike any other position in another sport, the way they shift around while squatted, on their knees, or doing the splits, and of course there is the anticipation/reflexes to go with it.

Fluery probably has the best saves in history because 1) he gives up a lot of rebounds, 2) he's constantly out of position, and 3) he has a flair for the dramatic and makes even routine saves a bit more elaborate than they need to be sometimes. One of my favorite goaltenders of all time. And someone whose personality and play style just lends itself to highlight reels.

I've been goaltending my whole life. it's one of the most enjoyable positions of any sport I have ever played. I love seeing your reactions to the sport. Always love seeing new people get into it. It really is an amazing sport both to play and watch! A quote from one of the greats Vladislav Tretiak "There is no position in sport as noble as goaltending."

The three best NHL goalies of all time are probably Roy, Brodeur, and Hasek. They all had very different styles. Hasek was undersized and relied on crazy reflexes and flexibility so his saves are probably the most impressive to watch in a highlight reel, but they were all amazing.

Not to mention the number of rules that had to be put in place because of Hasek in regards to where and how goalies are allowed to play the puck lmfao guy was a menace

Being a goalie myself, I want to thank you for showing these saves. Nothing is better than robbing someone of what they think is a sure goal. Ask any goalie. All of us will do anything to keep the puck out of our goal. Even putting your face or head infront of a shot as a last ditch attempt at stopping it.

I love your reactions to our very underrated sport. Just so you know, the average slap shot now days is around 100mph, further making some of these saves unbelievable!

My brother got married last year and had a couple of friends coming from Great Britain. I played hockey for about 40 years and I played some junior hockey fairly higher level one level below pros and they were absolutely fascinated about the game and pretty much we spent the entire bachelor party talking about aspects of the game. They could not believe that you can just fight. I said it’s like a pressure valve keeps things under control.

its definitely one of the highest skill sports to be a goal keeper in. Those slapshots can easily up to speed of 160Kmh. The reaction time and flexibility you need to become a pro as a goalie is off the fricken charts.

I think modern goalie equipment and playstyle just looks cool! In addition to looking cool the modern "butterfly" style is also a lot more effective for covering the net than the old school stand up style.

Carey Price is the most technical goaltender i ever see, this guy was totaly insane. Calm and keep control of shoot he receive, we all see what he did in 2014 Olympics at Sotchi. It was totaly insane this guy creat his own world.

Goalies are my FAVORITE part of the game, in fact all my sweaters (jerseys) are goalies ❤️ from various teams 💁🏼‍♀️ They are stupidly athletic and their hand eye coordination is just unparalleled. A friend of mine that plays pro says he had to learn to actually not think too hard about it and let his reflexes/muscle memory be dominant. Re what you said about speed, I suspect it is one of the fastest contact sports. When people are learning to watch hockey they often whinge about not being able to see/follow the puck, to which I say, stop trying!! Watch the motion on the ice, the way the players’ bodies are angled, follow the flow of the plays and suddenly you’ll realize you can read play development… and therefore you’ll know where the puck is without having to micro-track it with your eyes all the time lol. Anyway glad you discovered and are loving the sport like we do!! 🙌🏻🏒🥅❤

I don't know if the NHL still uses it, but there used to be a training aid for goalies. It was essentially an electronic screen/camera that 'fired' shots at a goalie in front of the screen. There was no puck. The idea being the goalie had to 'block' light from the screen so the camera could record a 'save'. It tested reaction times and accuracy of 'placement' between the 'puck' (where the light lit) and a goalies reaction. The NHL used to take the equipment on the road to let fans try it. It was determined that NHL goalies don't 'think' every reaction. There's not enough time. The milliseconds it takes for the brain to tell a muscle to move is longer than the time it takes for a goalies body to simply react. It's proposed that goalies develop a 'third sense', like a reflex action that never comes from the brain but from the spinal cord. Like pulling your hand from a hot object, we don't think, communicate, take action (eyes/sensors to the brain, analyze then a message to the muscles). That takes too long. It's believed some goalies reactions are reflexive; eyes to spinal cord to muscles, saving milliseconds from stimuli to reaction. And yes, hockey goalies' brains are a totally different level. They see and recognize a HUGE field of view (unlike other players who get knocked on their butts by a hard check because they get tunnel vision and don't see that 240 pound defenseman barreling towards them). And their brains process possibilities we can't even imagine. They recognize body language, stick movement and speeds most humans would melt trying to process. Very much like fighter pilots, but with far less time to react, or chess masters, their brains process stimuli in what seems humanly impossible. Or like cricket batters, who know exactly what bowl is coming by the bowlers body language. And with that analogy, a 'fast' bowler can usually bowl somewhere near 100kph. A baseball pitcher can have a great pitch at 100mph. A hockey wrist shot, from 10 ft. away, can reach up to 60mph while a slap shot can exceed 100mph; remembering that these shots can occur much closer to a goalie than a cricket bowl or baseball pitch (they originate from a fixed distance, the popping crease or the pitchers mound). A slap shot can happen just outside the goal crease (the blue zone in front of the net). Some times a save is just pure luck, a sprawling shot in the dark, hoping it works. Some times, it's absolute pure GOLD. As you have seen in some videos.

Hockey can be hard to follow on television, but seeing it in person, you can actually follow it much better

Omg 😂 I love your reactions! Goalies are a special breed ( my son, and my BF are goalies so i know) . The gear has gotten lighter BUT the pads, catcher and gloves are still a weight that they are throwing all over the place . Apparently it helps goalies if they have ADHD

as to why the one goalie was behind the goal. He was anticipating the puck riding around the boards and ending up behind the net where he could play it. That's a pretty routine play for most goalies, happens all the time. But, the puck took a really weird bounce and wound up going straight towards the goal, so he had to dive and get his stick in there to stop it from going in.

As an amateur goalie I am biased. I love being a goalie. Being on the ice the whole game and how critical you are to a win is the best. Also the worst lol. Shutout is the best selly!

Fun fact about Rask (the goalie at 7:22ish) - he stopped a puck shot from a cannon a couple of years ago.. lol

In march 1991, goalie Ron Tugnutt played a game for the ages. His team was the Quebec Nordiques (who later became the Colorado Avalanche), and in 1991 they were dead last in the rankings. They were playing Boston that night, who were near the top. Quebec had 26 shots on goal. Boston had...73. And the game ended in a tie. Now, understand, Tugnutt was by no means a superstar like Patrick Roy or Martin Brodeur. You have to be good to make it to the NHL, but he was average in that league. And yet, that night, he was so good that the Boston fans (known as one of the toughest crowds in the league) actually applauded him after the game as he took a bow in front of them, upon the suggestion of Cam Neely, one of the best Boston players. Raymond Bourque, another Boston star, congratulated Tugnutt after the game. Bourque was robbed in overtime by Tugnutt and just looked up to the heavens in disbelief. All in all, like I said, one for the ages. It is said Tugnutt smelled of burnt rubber for days afterwards...

2:30 when offensive players hit the puck around the boards like that, they’re usually trying to just get off the ice and it’ll go around the boards clean. goalie was going to stop it but it hit a divider in the glass

Most goals make saves through anticipation and reading body language of the guy shooting the park or passing Pak, because at average speed of about 80 miles an hour you don’t really see the box you just anticipate where it’s gonna be

I played football/soccer and ice hockey for years, as a keeper/goalie. From 8 yesrs of both, I can say the hockey goalie is the most demanding and difficult of the two sports. I love them both, but hockey, is more than special. When tbat puck is ripped at the net, it is pure reaction, you move before you see tje pucks final trajectory. Its hard to explain.

Why the goalies are out of the net, is to make a pass. I'm a goalie myself, I love making those huge saves. I'm out for the rest of my season with a lower body injury. Love the vids, keep up the work!

NHL is definitely the fastest game on earth for overall pace. You have guys skating over 30km/h when they turn on the jets - so hits are happening sometimes at combined speeds of 50km/h +, and that small hard black rubber disc is getting passed around at over 50mph. Modern stick wrist shots often clock 80mph +, and slapshots can hit over 100mph. It's such a crazy sport, and it's my favorite game. I still say the purest competition sport is professional golf because of the stakes, but hockey is my favorite overall sport.

About the save at 3:17, goalies rarely try this, it's definitely an all or nothing move. It can either create a highlight like this or go very, very wrong.

One of my fav things was Patrick Roy, arguably one of the best goalies of this generation... complained about Alex Ovechkin having a tinted visor because he couldn't see his eyes. He was forced to change and look at him now lmao. About to break the goal scoring record. Also these saves are great but pay attention to who they were on. Really amazing!

6:20. In the video, you heard the name Lundqvist a lot. The New York Rangers goalkeeper Henrik Lundqvist was (retired in 2020) one of the best goalkeepers ever. He had a save percentage of .918 and he had 23,509 goals saved during his career.

I suggest: look up whatever you can find of vintage Terry Sawchuck, Dominique Hasheck, Ken Dryden, etc.( pardon any spelling errors).

You got one thing very right: the speed of he sport. As a hockey fan it's so hard to watch football/soccer because of the pace is soooo slow compared to hockey.

Fun Fact...that second play that the goalie dived for got the coach of the opposing team fired...there was more involved but that was the last straw...that was the last game Mike Babcock coached in the NHL....so far

You should try wearing the goaler equipement. It's heavy like hell! It's around 50 pounds when dry. In the game it's gating heavier with swet and melted ice.

They say that, to be a proper Goalie in the NHL, you need a Slinky for a spine.

He was behind the goal because the other player shot it along the boards so he was going back to play it, but it took a strange ricochet off the board and was headed to the net.

If you can find a good Carey Price video, his career is pretty much over but he was one of the top goalies in the league for a very long time.

Also check out emergency goalies. When the goalie and the back up goalie get injured a non NHL goalie will get pulled in to play. It's kind of nuts how the system works. But there is nothing cooler than a 40 year old getting dropped into the middle of a top tier hockey game and he is an accountant or a Zamboni driver.

Goaltenders in icehockey has never been underestemated, especially amongst hockeyplayers. They are usually considered most valuable. A dirty hit on a goalie requires an emediate retribution from the guy closest to the incident. Just one of many many reasons why icehockey is the greatest game on earth.

What just happened? We call that Marc Andre Fleury. Lol he’s one of the best goalies that’s ever played the game…and now you know why.

The goalie will go behind the net to stop the puck from going around the boards. That way the goalies team can get possession of the puck. Sometimes, the shot puck hits the glass and deflects toward the goal and the goalie has to make a dive to prevent it from entering the net. Of all players, a goalie on his game, can be almost impossible to beat and is the one player that can actually steal a game from the other team!

The funny thing is that it's literally called a scorpion save hahah

I'd say it's the fastest sport (aside from motorsports, of course). Keep in mind that the skaters are moving at around 35 kph and the puck is moving at between 145 kph to 180 kph on those shots. Ice hockey goaltender is arguably the most difficult position in all of team sports.

I played goal (not NHL level) as a tender and it's a combination of learned muscle memory and intuition. I haven't played in years but to this day I'll instinctively catch things that fall or put a foot under them so they don't break. It also really hurts when you take a shot to the helmet.
