I remember that scouts and managers thought Ovi wouldn't last long in the league when he threw his weight around like this every game (as a goal scorer) but here we are, age 37 and on the verge of breaking the scoring record. Also, fun fact: The first goal on his "electric goals" is called "The Goal" and he actually scored it with 1 hand on his back. He was versus the Coyotes which at the time were coached by none other than the great one, Wayne Gretzky. Who holds the goal scoring record. Wayne said he wants to see Ovi beat his record, as well.

Dude's closing in on 830 regular season goals. Gretzky's record is 894. It's one of those marks that for a long time seemed like no one would ever reach, even more so since it's a lot harder to score today than it was in the 80's and 90's. Ovechkin has one of the best, heaviest, quickest, hardest shots the game has ever seen. Put that together with his power, technique and burning desire to score and, well... Entering the previous season, some guys were wondering if he was slowing down and raising doubts about his chances to surpass Gretzky's 894, but instead, he was scoring at the highest pace of his career early on last season! :D Random bs not withstanding, he should crack 894 within the next two seasons. It will be glorious! Also, one overlooked/underappreciated goal he scored is his 63rd from his highest scoring year (2008) against Carolina... That's one of my favorite goals of all time, especially coupled with the Carolina players' reactions to the goal. And you should check out Pavel Datsyuk and 'greatest goals in nhl history' or some such. Should have a lot of good ones.

Ovechkin is the second top scorer all time. He’s now quite old for a hockey player (37) and is still scoring at the same rate he always has. His game has evolved a fair bit from his young days, where you’d see a lot more flashy goals similar to the first one (that was during his rookie year), into becoming a sharpshooter who scores the majority of his goals off of one-timer slap shots from the high circle like the shots you see later in the video. They’re so effective because he has amazing aim, as well as the fact that he has one of the fastest shots in the league with him recording a slap shot velocity of 110mph in a skills competition one year. The average player cant shoot it over 100, and every other player in the contest was a defenceman, who are usually the only players who do take slapshots in games, and they tend to be bigger and stronger than forewards. The longevity of his scoring ability is one of the most impressive things about him. He’s less than 100 goals away from the all time scoring record held by Wayne Gretzky

Ovi (The Great 8) currently sits #2 all time in goals. The amazing thing about all those one-timers is that they’re coming from the left circle called his “office”. We ALL: fans, commentators, defenseman and GOALIES know they’re coming and where they’re coming from and they STILL can’t be stopped. Ovechkin is just flat out fun to watch. On the ice he’s physical, passionate and dedicated. Off the ice he’s great with the fans and kind of a goof ball lol. So much so that after their Stanley Cup win he and the rest of the Caps randomly celebrated with fans for like a week. Up to and including getting their drink on and swimming in fountains.

The “first-time shot” is called a one-timer. Ovi is one of the best at that. The “stick shuffle” is called stick handling. The most skilled players can stick handle faster than you can see sometimes. If you want to see great stick handling, check out the best dangles. The glass is now plexiglass, but it used to be regular glass. Check out glass-breaking hits. They’re self explanatory. Pavel Datsyuk doesn’t play anymore, but he has some of the smoothest hands in the game. He’d be a great guy to react to next.

Ovechkin is not only one of the two greatest scorers of all time, he did so in an era that was difficult to score, and he had to deal with shorten seasons because of the pandemic. Normally, his production should have started to decline about 4 years ago, and yet, he remains one of the top scorers in the league, mostly because no one knows how to stop his one-timer still (as you rightly guessed, it is one of the hardest shot to pull off). Even if he doesn't beat the goal record, he will probably be recognized as the greatest goal scorer ever (although Wayne Gretzky will still be recognized as the GOAT).

The hits are really strong in hockey, no lie. I was once treated to a very great seat at a home game of the Winnipeg Jets. I was center ice, 3rd row. Those seats are over $400 each, but it was a gift to me. And the force they drive each other into the boards is insane when you're that close, the whole barrier/boards/plexiglass bow out a foot or two as they slam each other into the boards at what is probably about 40-50 mph...

You mentioned about how he wasn't playing the puck around 4:30... and thats a super important lesson that separates many players from the rest. You always play the body, not the puck. The puck can go anywhere... a player can only go where their hips go/point! Understanding that and not shying away from the physical play is what makes him the GOAT. He has the complete game, physical, scoring, iq/awareness, etc..

Wayne Gretzky got the record for most goals in a career at 894 goals. The second was Gordie Howe at 801. Gretzky was always thought to be untouchable as the game changed a lot in the last 40 years, with the goalies being way better, and the game tighter. Couple of years ago when Ovechkin hit 600 goals, people started to maybe think he could come close. But Ovechkin didn't slow down at all against all odds. Even at 37 yeards old, his scoring pace haven't changed from earlier in his career. He's at 812 right now, he passed Gordie Howe this year. And he still have a contract for 3 years after this season.

If you like the passion of hockey. I would point you to the 1972 summit series between Canada and Russia. First time the two countries played professional players as it was only Olympic hockey in those days internationally. We had the iron curtain and Russia was winning all the international games as our professionals can't play internationally. Also cold war and capitalist don't play well with communists, so we had a series. We had a 4 game Canada and 4 games Russia play off. Now this thing got crazy. Ovechkin is a product of the Russia hockey system and yes he is very close to becoming and will become the leading point getter in the NHL. He will pass the great one's record soon. (Gretzky). Russia in that series taught Canadians how to play hockey and the game here change forever. All that fancy play we like that is Russian inspired. The hits and individualism on the ice that is the Canadian game. The two styles were very quickly adopted in both countries as the series came down to one goal in the last few seconds of game 8. September 28th 1972.

So interesting to listen to someone watch Ovechkin who doesn't know the Great 8. He's not expecting the one-timers from his office, or the crazy acrobatics at the net. So many of the goals you saw were important in the games, yes, but more, recently basically every goal has been a milestone of some sort, tying or passing players on all time lists of one kind or another. It's going to be a little bit now before he can get at Gretsky, but basically everyone including Gretsky himself expects him to become the all time leading scorer in the league before he retires.

sometimes the best goals are mixed with important goals, as in this video. when you say stick shuffle, it's actually called stick handling. "dekes" are combinations of stick handling and sometimes body movements to confuse a goalie or a defender. When you saw connor mcdavid, he is the best at getting through players with dekes and he does it at amazing speed. Ovechkin is the master of the "one-timer". shooting the puck before you stop or cradle it. goalies know it's coming, but ovechkin's shot is too powerful & accurate to stop.

When u move the puck with the stick it’s called stickhandling and when go around a player or goalie it’s called deking. And the white and yellow barriers around the ice are called boards

Presently Alex Ovechkin is #2 in total goals scored - 830. The most is Wayne Gretzky at 894 but it is expected that Ovechkin will pass that.

Mert, I know I commented this is the last one, but I think in honor of the Super Bowl this week, you should react to the NFL Throwback’s “Super Bowl plays that get increasingly more insane.” I think you’d enjoy it.

He (The great 8 )and Sidney Crosby were the best two players of his generation he's getting up there now his mid thirties. Connie McDavid is this generation's great player and arguably one of all time.

Russian Machine Never Breaks. You noticed that one hit was very late. You can get called by the referee for a late hit. The rule is to play the puck. Also, it’s not accomplishing much if you also go down after hitting a player. Alex is 37 now, and trying to remain a top scorer. He doesn’t throw his body around as much as he used to. He is a proud Russian, and is a Putin favorite (of course), but we love him anyway.

He's second all time scorer. There is a VERY good chance he will beat Wayne Gretzky for the most all time by the time he retires. The guy is insane. He doesn't move on the power play. He will stand there. And everyone knows he does it. But his one touch shot is so powerful it doesn't matter how ready you are, it's almost impossible to stop it
