I've met Tommy several times when he and Phil lived here in Melbourne playing pub gigs..All I can say apart from their guitar wizardry Tommy is a very sympathetic man to all, a real kind soul..Phil was great to chat to and his guitar heroes were Scotty Moore, Hank Marvin and James Burton..Did I mention Phil also had a pet python? True!! I miss Phil as Australia's Greatest electric guitarist and a very funny man..Love to all on this post from Australia 🙋❤️❤️❤️

Phil was not just a great guitar player he use to tell the most amazing stories in an amazing way that would leave you crying with laughter. I went to see him one night to drop a demo off that he was putting tracks down for in the studio the next day. He put the CD on while I poured a couple of Jack Daniels with Pepsie max - had to be Pepsi max with Phil - we sat in the lounge put on G3 series with Steve Morse, Via and Satch. Steve Morse was his favourite guitar player - because of his mastery with a guitar pick - but he was blown away with Via and it may have been the Jack talking but he said Via was the best player in the world that night. We watched the series 3 times with him jamming along with it, chatting away, telling jokes and just having a laugh. About midnight I said I had to head off, I only lived 3 minutes from him and stupidly drove home. As I was leaving he was trying to get me to give his pet python a good night cuddle pissing himself laughing as I was crapping my pants with fear. So he puts the terrifying reptile back in its fish tank and said hang on and grabbed the demo that he had played once in the kitchen while we were in the lounge with G3 blaring, Phil was as deaf as a post in his right ear which was the ear facing the kitchen where the demo played once. I said no that’s for you to learn the 4 songs for tomorrow. He said, and I shit you not, “ I already have”, I said fuck of I couldn’t hear them and your deaf as a post. He picked up his guitar and said this is the first one played it and them played the melodic ideas he had for it. He did that for the other 3 songs. I grabbed his arm, he said what’s up I said I’m checking for a pulse, I’m not convinced you’re human. That may seem hard to believe but as sure as water is wet he really was that good. You MUST see him and Maestro Tommy play the Irish Scottish Medley, it is, well it’s them. RIP Phil you will never be forgotten.

I had no idea that Phil had died , it hit me like gut punch when you mentioned it . Tommy and Phil would often play in my area in the early and mid 80s . I was privileged to catch their act on a number of occasions . They were supernaturally talented and very funny as well. Thanks for the memories Phil . RIP.

Really appreciate you doing a write up on both Tommy and Phil Emmanuel. If only you heard the stories about what he (Phil) was doing in his younger days with his playing like in the '70's. He was doing Al Di Meola's " Race with devil on a spanish highway" great guitar skills back then!! Many a thank you to Wings of Pegasus for doing the video. Cheers (Nephew Tommy Emmanuel)

Yes, I saw them play Mediterranean Sundance on acoustic together, at The Basement. Note for note, and clean as. I can't remember who was playing Al and who was playing Paco. I remember Phil playing a breezy tune. He then stopped and played it double time. Nice. Then he stopped and played it double double time. Wow, I thought, this guy is supreme. Yes, he stopped and played it double-double-double time, 8 times the original speed. With Tommy, it was the absolutey extraordinary chord shapes that blew me away.

I saw them several times in the 70’s as the Emmanuel Brothers Band in Sydney. I vaguely recall Tommy was actually the drummer at some point. Phil was regarded as the ace guitarist. They were gigging a lot when the Sydney scene was vibrant. Great players.

They used to do this in the pubs around Sydney in the 80’s and you could just see they loved playing with each other. Tommy used to joke that Phil was the “greatest conman of them all” - a reference to the fact that Phil went to the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney - hence a Con man. They were always joking around and loving their playing. Brilliant to see live.

I grew up watching Tommy and Phil play live in Sydney. They were the support act in a small club downtown for a Roy Buchanan tour gig. We had a table right up front. Roy apparently had never heard of them, let alone seen them, and this was the first gig of the tour. They played out of their socks, and Roy was not happy. We could see him stage left talking to a suit, and the animated conversation seemed to be something like, "Who the FUCK are these guys? Why wasn't I told? I have to follow THAT?" RIP Roy B and Phil E.

I saw Tommy 4 times in one year - first time at Crown Plaza Terrigal in a really small room. Second time with a harp-guitar player at Avondale. Third time with Phil at Central Coast Leagues and the fourth time was with Rick Price at Newcastle Civic Theatre. Also got to interview Tommy around the Journey album and met him when he just turned up at Coast Rock FM unannounced and played live on air. Always a great person to chat to and be around.

G’day mate I just watched one of your other videos mentioning you should watch Tommy and Phil. You’ve obviously found them of course LOL. I was fortunate enough to grow up with these two men, are used to come around to our place when they were touring and stay sometimes. When I got older I got into music had my own PA system and I used to do the sound for Phil and sometimes open for his show with my band. I’m glad people overseas get to enjoy these two miracle workers of the fretboard

My first gig with my band was opening for Phil last year. I was lucky enough to have a good chat with him and tell him how much of an influence he was to me, and how my first gig I ever went to was one of his. He was also nice enough to sign my Mockingbird. I was later told that I should consider myself lucky, because it's very rare that he will sign someone's guitar. RIP Phil, he is an Aussie icon and will certainly be missed.

Improvisation at its best ... Tommy is a treasure... Their father was a professional musician .. But the improvisation isn't from jamming that sounds degrading. I believe the improvisation is a step up when your a master luther... Tommy really stepped up his game... He's incredible... I use the strings he suggested... I think he's top 5 in the world... 🌎... I don't care what anyone says.. I don't know what he's ranked has to be in the top 10... But acoustically i love him.. He's a show off too... I could only jam 🎸 with him .. He'd eat me alive... I'd be a ship outta water... You could professor... I put those blinders on ya and unleashed ya... You know exactly what key's he jumps to... Rock 🎸

Nice to get those technical and observational comments Fil. The guys are just so smooth and together that they can be easily missed. Thanks. I have seen Phil in quite a few band lineups . He was not elitist he would play with whoever he had or had invited him. It didn't matter how good or bad the players were, Phil was so good that he could carry the whole band if he had to. He was also a really nice guy. He spent his whole break talking to me one time and he didn't even know me. It sure was special when Phil and Tommy got together (great memories of the Emanuel Bros Whiz Band in the eighties). Sad that we will never see them together again.

Hi, GAZ here from Melbourne/Australia. Only recently, I found your channel... & I luv it! I've already shared with my mates, as I reckon' they would luv it too. Just on Tommy & Phil Emmanuel.. I'm so fortunate (as an Aussie) to have seen them many times, both together & individually. You must check out their 'back-stories'. I remember one time, when my wife & I were front row at Tommy's gig in a tiny 50 seat old local theatre. He was amazing, not only because of his talent, but also how he was so funny & told jokes between songs. He made every song real, because he explained why he wanted to play them. One other example was, when I saw them both at a local pub playing in a band called ''Goldrush'. Believe it or not, most of the night Tommy played drums - also amazing, while Phil took on the guitar duties. One more great memory....... Seeing Tommy in a band at a local pub playing guitar for an Aussie called John Farnham. John is a legend here in Australia (He was lead singer for a while with Little River Band. They did a version of 'Hollywood Nights' (Bob Seger) & it blew my mind to see such talent, so close in a local pub. All the best & keep up the great work - GAZ (Melbourne/Australia)

Whilst Phil and Tommy may have inherited their talent from their musical parents they have both played drums and guitar and appeared on stage from six years old. Tommy is never seen without his guitar, apparently he has played for at least eight hours every day for sixty years! He is the epitome of the traditional Australian, he does not give a damn for 'appearances' and is proud to scratch up his expensive, custom made Maton guitar!

There were couple of yobbos having a conversation and when Phil started his set they just carried on bellowing at each other. Phil stopped mid-song and looked at them and said 'I bet this thing (electric guitar) can talk louder than you'. The yobbos shut up.

What a loss to Tommy when Phil died. I can not imagine the loss of that connection and the effect it must have had on him. We miss him too. Both of their musical talents are nectar from the gods.

Absolutely! I’m now glad to see Tommy when he plays with Mike Dawes as it seems that they have some of that connection. No one can ever replace his brother Phil but I think they’re enjoying having this opportunity to make some great music together.

Man I just have to mention something here that some I don't think realize. When their playing each others guitars, Tommy is picking Phil"s guitar and Phil is picking Tommy's. Tommy can't see his hands. Phil can but Tommy is doing the picking. NOW YOU THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A BIT KIDDIES. Then do what i do when i see these Guys play, Weep with Joy and Smile ear to ear. RIP Phil.

I checked out their bios, they lived a different life from the average Joe and made sure they had fun doing it, especially when they played together. That picking the other's guitar...VERY special, particularly the one behind the back and didn't miss a beat! Thanks! I'm definitely sharing this! Like 94, C97, V547. /:-)

Heh heh, I thought I've seen pretty much all of Tommy's videos, but I guess I missed this one. The hand switching thing between guitars was bad-ass!! Probably something only 2 brothers could pull off at that level of playing, since they know each other's style. Too bad Phil passed away recently... just found out about that a month ago? (R.I.P. Phil Emmanuel) Anyway.. Tommy is still alive and well and touring the world.😉 Great review Fil... love these guys!😍🎼🎸
