Lifeson remains hugely underrated. Loved for sure, but very underrated. He is so much more creative than other rock, hard rock, and progressive guitarists. There really isn't anyone quite like him.

Alex was so attuned to his band mates and he was such a natural player, instinctual, and so proficient he could blend in. He is such a master at his craft and did such amazing work so well that he is often overlooked.. That that is a demonstration of a true master! I have heard him on other projects not with rush with rush and he immediately stands stands out. I heard a track with him doing the intro with marco miniman and and I'm like oh my God that's how Alex Lifeson. He is one of the best players on the planet.

Yeah, Alex started, jamming with his buddy Geddy in his basement when they were kids. They came upon John Rutsy to produce their first album. Soon after, they had to replace him. Their showed up Neil Peart in his rusted old Ford Pinto for his audition. Tbey both said to each other, "This is no ordinary drummer!" Alex then went on to perform with one of earth's most renowned drummers and bass players like no one else could. No one else!

Alex probably had the biggest chord vocabulary of any guitarist. Especially if you consider all of the arpeggio he used with so many strange chords. He was a very smart guitarist, which is incredible when you consider that he really had no formal training. So much of what he did was self-taught, which is easy to tell because so much of what he played wasn’t very standard guitar playing you might get in lessons. Sometimes too much formal training can put you in a box with your thinking. All three of these guys were pretty much self-taught, at least up until the point Neil took lessons from Freddy Gruber. That is why everything they did was unlike anything any other bands were doing.

@@peterwinters8587 Triumph was great. I'm a big fan of their music and they don't really get their due unfortunately. However, they weren't really in the same league as Rush. Once they put their differences aside and reconciled, I hoped that they would make a reunion album but it wasn't to be I guess.

This is the single most enthused rock audience I have ever seen, including all footage of The Beatles at Shea Stadium. For every human there to be jumping in the air and SINGING to an instrumental--and singing to THIS complex instrumental, is beyond all belief. It will never happen again.

I’ve seen them live 27 times. They are the consummate pros live playing the songs just as they are on the albums. The musicianship is off the charts. Pure Gold!

I went to school with them, I remember when they started, they played at our high school’s dances. Their original logo were these stickers that said “RUSH energized rock,” and we had the stickers on the inside door of our lockers. My girlfriend dated Geddy, at the time. We’re all so proud of what they became, world wide sensations.

When I was still living in Germany, I had planned to go watch their 'Roll The Bones' show - but I was desperately needed at work so it didn't happen. "There's no way I'll miss their show again once they return!", I swore myself. I did not know at the time that this happened only every 10 years or so! And so when they eventually did play in Germany again, I'd already emigrated to NZ - where hardly anyone's even *heard* of Rush, and I believe they'd never come on tour here either! 😔 And I cried when I read the sad news about Neil's passing 😔

@@mightyV444 I’m lucky to live in the city Neil was born in, Hamilton, Ontario. I saw them on every tour since A Farewell To Kings except two tours. The concert and my wife being due on the same day meant I stayed home. Can’t remember why I missed the Vapour Trails tour. Anyway, I saw them right up to the very last time they played in Toronto, the show that became the R40 concert DVD. It was a privilege each time. I’m sorry you never got to see them but I can say that the last two concert DVD’s come very close to replicating the experience, especially the Clockwork Angels tour disc. That’s probably them at their best, both the playing and the staging. The only thing you won’t replicate at home is the heat that came off the stage from the pyro blast at the end of Carnies. I don’t know how everyone on stage avoided third degree burns!

I've been a bass flogger for 35 years and I've always loved attempting to play Rush, any song. Now my 16 year old son is a guitarist (and huge Alex honk) and we are working on Rush material together....the most fun I've had playing, ever! Thank you for everything, boys and I'm tipping my 40 to Neil right now.

To even attempt to decipher Rush is an accomplishment. I never appreciated Rush until I saw them live. It is a jaw dropping (get in touch with your inner self) experience. Thanks for keeping this epic musicianship alive.

I mean, seriously. How many times in your life have you seen a crowd of tens of thousands singing along with an instrumental? THAT is what makes Rush so great.

This concert was the loosest I’ve ever seen Rush live. Neil said it was just an incredible exchange between them and the Brazilian audience that elevated them that night. The fact that it was even filmed was a minor miracles with things being thrown together at the last minute and massive rains that day eliminating any soundcheck or chance to test the recording gear with the band. If only they’d been able to film in HD but they were a year or two too early for that. But the crowd singing back an instrumental was insane and made this the best version of YYZ they ever captured.

All that sound coming from three amazing musicians. Hands down, the best.

Rio reminded me how we took the band for granted as this was an audience that put all others to shame. These rabid fans showed how appreciative they were for Rush coming and are the stars of this show. And to think the band wasnt sure in the early stages of planning if they had a following enough to play there

Three of the best musicians in rock, and all in one band. I've been a Rush fan since the seventies and live they were superb. There was nobody like this before Rush, and there will be nobody that will replace them. Alex actually suffers with arthritis in his hands and he still manages to play superbly.

The passion in Alex Lifeson’s face during that show says it all. After 40+ years, to show that much passion for playing is unbelievable. Not only does he love and respect the men he’s playing with they are his best friends. Those of us who are RUSH fans have read and listened to everything. When I can say that I enjoyed watching them eat dinner and just talk for 2 hours is incredible. I hate most people……not offense to anybody, (I think more can relate) 😂 but I could watch them talk, eat and walk around for hours and hours with no problem. They are just so smart and cool guys. ❤❤❤❤! R.I.P Professor…..

Rest in Peace, Neil Peart. Amazing performance, analysis and demonstration! And this audience! My gosh.

The result of a partnership containing top professionals with boatloads of talent, a blue collar work ethic, and checked egos. Yes they took their craft seriously, but they made fun of themselves and made it easy for the listener to "catch the spirit". They had that unique quality of making you root for their success. Thanks Fil, you by the way have many of the same!

As someone who does not play an instrument, I still really enjoy your examples, explanations, and commentary. Well done sir. This is a real education for me.

Hi Fil...When it comes to RUSH music I still can see their albums in my house! My son was a top notch drummer, and thought RUSH had it all! After he let his mom listen to the music with him I had to concur they were terrific! I remember buying RUSH shirts for my son too....my son is now 43, and still loves this group so much! I will say my son always wanted me to care about his interest in music! I really learned to enjoy it! ✌️

I saw Rush twice live. I've heard that Rush is considered to be the world's smallest orchestra. It's easy to see why. Rush is an iconic Canadian band. May Neil Peart rest in peace. Cheers, Fil! ✌️

Not trying to rub it in, but I saw Rush on every tour since Permanent Waves. My favorite all time band since I was 16 in 1976. It took me to 1980 before I finally made it to a concert, but I was sure I’d never miss another concert whenever they came to town, because they were alway, by far, the best concerts I ever went to. That includes groups like Led Zeppelin, Queen, Heart and many other legends of rock. They were all greats, but Rush was always more professional and perfect. Very detail oriented. They never seemed real stoned, like many of the other groups, especially Zeppelin. Jimmy Page seemed like he was going to fall asleep right on stage. Rush we’re always very sharp and the tightest band you’ll ever see live. I’m only disappointed I’ll never see them live again, but even more so disappointed that so many young people, who are first discovering Rush on KZread and other internet media will never get to see this legendary band live.

I love how much you appreciate great musicians of any genre. It shows in your face. It's why I love watching you. Rush is awesome and you are pretty great yourself.

Those who think lightning doesn’t strike twice, consider Rush: it struck thrice.

I never cease to be amazed by your ability to deconstruct musical pieces, sections of pieces, single transitions, all by ear. I don't know how many times I've seen that concert but it never grows old and neither do your videos. I wish I'd taken up the guitar myself once way back when it was possible. Overall, all I can really say is thank you. And Rush being Rush, I always time trip back home on the soundtrack they provide.… Btw, Rush being a Canadian band, pronounce the title of this piece as "Y Y Zed." Just thought that you should know.

Been attending and listening to RUSH since the 1970's. THE BEST!! There was, and like you said, never will be anything like being there, in person, with everyone else, just so completely into the music.

Rush is amazing. I’ve never seen this live performance. What a treasure. I’ve always thought Geddy Lee on bass is as distinctive as John Taylor (Duran Duran) on bass.

I remember going to their concert when moving pictures came out, and they were awesome!!! Love tom sawyer and limelight. The opening act was April wine, anybody remember them? Lol😃😃😃 Fantastic job Fil as always.

April Wine came up in conversation only recently for me! My big brother had bought their 'Harder, Faster' album back in the day, and I liked it a lot, too! I came across it on CD in a bargain bin many years later; Great find! 😃 Some great, great Music has come out of Canada! SAGA, Loverboy, Triumph, etc. 😃

Yes canada does have some great bands, and Rik Emmett has one if the best vocals around!!!! Triumph forever!!! I am from the south and they have put out good bands too, lynard skynard, 38 special, alabama, rossington collins, just to name a few. Lol I could go on forever. Lol😂😂😃

I have this DVD live in Rio. Hugh Rush fan since 7years old.One of my older brothers had the album Moving Pictures and the love affair with Rush begins.REALLY enjoyed this one.Thank you for sharing.

I can't believe it's been nearly 18 years since I too had bought that DVD! Came with a great documentary, 'The Boys In Brazil' (It's also here on YT). Been a fan since '89 when a friend gave me a bunch of his latest LP acquisitions to check out and one of them was 'Grace Under Pressure' - and I was instantly hooked 😁

This is what a full Maracanã Stadium can make with the right band and the unique brazilian crowd. This moment will be never forgotten by the guys. Literally an earthquake!

Alex' brilliance as a player is somewhat disguised because of the other two superstars in the band. As a group - unparalled! Excellent showcasing of Alex' talent. Thanks.

The reason I don’t think there will be another band like Rush is the combination of three virtuoso musicians (which could be repeated) with three people who leave their egos at the door when they come together. They split the song writing credits equally, they split the money equally, each of them had their moment in the limelight, they played for each other and they respected each other. Each knew what the others brought to the band. Look at the way they wrote lyrics - Neil would send lyrics to Geddy and, respecting Geddy’s need to connect with the lyric, would be happy if Geddy just found a few words that he could connect with. Neil would then rewrite the song around those lyrics. No ego, no flouncing off, just a partnership based on mutual respect, trust and friendship. I can’t see that combination of talent and camaraderie (lasting over 4 decades) ever happening again. They were and are unique. Those of us lucky enough to see them live (where they were at their best) are truly lucky. Their music will last for generations but the experience of hearing it live has been lost forever.

They were Canadian. We still say ZED. It's a power letter. So grateful that Rush aren't blockers. Best friends till the end and never took themselves seriously. Great vid.

What blows my mind is 3 of the greatest musicians ever to walk this planet, came from the same area. Geddy and Alex met in jr high school in Willowdale, just North of Toronto, and Neil was from St. Catherine’s South of Toronto, at Lakeside Park.

I'm working on this one myself, but I'm attempting to be Geddy. Attempting.............. I know the notes, but at the moment, I can give you fast or I can give you smooth. I'm not afraid to admit that getting both to come together is still kicking my ass. Definitely not easy, but even the attempt is fun as hell, if painful at times....................... :D

And I'm not afraid of stainless strings, so I keep my Jazz bass strung with Rotosound Swing Bass 66 strings to get a bit more Ged out of it. Talk about a callous builder............................. :D

I could watch this analysis several times and catch on to something new each time. And I love the Egyptian Scale that they used. Thanks!

One of the most Underrated guitarists...imo

I’ve spent more than forty years trying to focus on Alex’s parts and I always get pulled away and locked into Geddy’s bass every time. So hard to focus when you’ve got three solos happening at the same time! How they never stepped on each other is a mystery and another testament to their greatness as musicians.

I haven't even started watching the video yet, but what a coincidence: I was reading the following sentence in a book only a couple of hours ago; "This is a picture of the luggage tag that would indicate that Mary has travelled from Toronto Pearson. The airport code is YYZ." 😄 And yay, it's Rush! One of my all-time favourites! 😊 Greetings from NZ! 😀

Hahaha! Thank you for giving Alex the props he deserves. He is so unique and talented and so far ahead of his time. Did you ever see the video of him as a teenager having a family discussion with his parents about playing in a band? Alex is just otherworldly in his syncopation and fretboard mastery.

Does any one here remember AMG Record Club from the '70's? You would get three records for a penny and then you were obligated to buy six or seven more at Club Price. They mailed you a certificate for the record of the month and if you didn't return it, they sent you the album. I got CARESS OF STEEL because I forgot to return the certificate. Been a fan ever since. ROCK!

BMG record club. I made the mistake of opting for 8-Tracks. I learned years later - Vinyl lasts much longer.

Fil listening to you is epic. I'm blown away . This was a flashback to someone I knew who played drums in a band and he almost said EVERYTHING you you said about Rush.He was into Rush and he idolized Neil Peart. Thanks for this AWESOME VIDEO! Thanks for this great video of my favorite band since the late 70's. I'm 66 and this music takes me back to the first time I saw Rush during the 2112 tour. Saw them several times, more than any other band. I'm not a musician but I still really love how you break the music down and explain the technical aspects of the music in a way that makes sense to even laymen. I did my share of partying during those days but I believe Rush was as good as they were and got even better those 4 decades because they were more devoted to their craft than wasting away like many great bands did and are doing today. I'm sure they did their share of partying if Passage To Bangkok is any indication but I think moderation was the key. Keep up the great work Fil !

Rush, when I was a kid came through town regularly must of seen them A dozen times over the years , hardest working band ever , both on stage and with there schedule, my favorite tours when they came to town with max Webster , yes I'm that old , another great Canadian band

I went to school with them too. And I wasn’t born until 82. metaphorically, they’ve been with me my whole life. P/G concert was my my bible as a 3 year old. And they were my first concert when I was in kindergarten on the Hold Your Fire tour and my second concert in the fourth grade on the Roll the Bones tour. Unfortunately, I never seen them after that but are still a big part of my life.

Rush in Rio good concert !! Great job Fil !! Rush is the most technical, orchestral, influential Prog. Rock 3 piece band ever.

I think a lot of people just watch the hands and forget that frequently Geddy is singing, playing bass and peddle synth, likewise Alex, dont get me started on Neil!

Cheeky harmonics! 😄 Gotta love Alex Lifeson! I really enjoyed this breakdown. I don't play guitar, but I appreciate understanding how players do what they do. I know you can't do it all the time, but I wish you would do more Rush. I can't get enough because we all know how incredible they were. It also would have been more fun if you had played along with the video in a few spots...I certainly would have been impressed. Rock on!! 🤘👍😁 P.S. please do more Rush 🙏

Steamy, rainy night in Brazil, 50-100k screaming fans, and they just ripped it up. This whole show was fabulous. Their first ever performance in Brazil... possibly in all of South America if my memory serves... explains why the crowd was so manic. I count myself lucky to have seen them way back on the Grace Under Pressure tour because their like will never be again.

Thank you, great video, RUSH is my favourite band and Alex lifeson my favourite guitarplayer together with Blackmore and Iommi. There is a fantastic video of Alex on youtube giving a guitar lesson on how he play "Spririt of The Radio" from start to end.

Man! You have a great set of ears! Way to go picking all of that off by ear! Thanks for the in-depth analysis of this amazing performance. I really miss seeing and hearing those guys. IMHO, RUSH was the best live rock band of all time. Entirely unique in musical composition, and unparalleled in delivery both live and in studio as well. I caught their show every chance I could from the late ‘80s until the last a few years back, and it was always a new experience. Rest in Peace, Professor.

I grew up with RUSH. Major part of my life musically. Saw them many many times live here in Canada 🇨🇦 Always amazing! 3 master musicians at the top of the talent tree! A bit of obscure trivia here but only a small portion of YYZ airport is in Toronto, most of it is actually in the city of Mississauga just to the west. Whereas Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) is fully within Toronto’s city limits situated on Toronto Island across the harbour from the city’s downtown core. So if they had flown into YTZ it probably would have been a different song.

A bit more trivia. Billy Bishop's AIC is YTZ because Toronto's telegraph office was designated TZ. When the IATA set up it's system all Toronto area airports were designated to begin with 'Y', thus YTZ for BB. Pearson use to be Malton airport and it's airport code was YZ,thus YYZ.

Coincidentally, it was saying in a book I was reading earlier today, "This is a picture of the luggage tag that would indicate that Mary has travelled from *Toronto Pearson* . The airport code is YYZ." 😀

I took my buddy to see them in Milwaukee I think in 2004 or 05. He said" who takes a 20 minute break in their concert?" Then he realized later they played for 3 hours!!! Just an awesome fans band!🤠

This was the 1st concert that I ever took my nephew too he was blown away and like me he picked up a pair of drumsticks and proceeded to torture his mom and dad😂😂😂😂 I am so thankful that I grew up when I did and I was able to see this phenomenal is nominal band in action

Just LOVED this Fil - the greatest 3 piece band of all time - pure talent - and the most enjoyable part is seeing your pure happiness and pleasure in the music during your explanations and attempts.

I wish I could play like you do Fil. I saw them live once. I couldn't believe how much music only 3 people could make. I was amazed. So sorry to hear of Neil's passing. I think that ended Rush. You did a great job here Fil. Thanks for doing this. Take Care.

My first two concerts were Permanent Waves tour in Phoenix in 1980, and Moving Pictures tour in '81. I was 13 and 14. It's what led me to be a Progressive Metal guitarist.

I agree with all the other accolades about this video analysis. Spot on rundown of what's going on. I don't know if you realize it or not but you nailed something else about this particular song and you reiterated it several times. The idea behind why they made this song was part of the structure of the song. Seeing the YYZ tags on their luggage meant they were back home after having been so many places on long tours. You phrased that when you talked about them going different places in the tune and always coming back "home" to the main melodies. You never spoke to it as an analogy to their concept of the tune but I suspect you put it in the way you did on purpose. Perhaps not but just know this; it was brilliant! That is my favorite aspect of this video because I never made the connection quite like you did when you started talking about "places in the song". Great job, Fil!

I saw the boys only once, on the R40 tour in New Orleans. I always had an appreciation for them but was honestly never a huge fan, but I gotta tell ya, those three cats are unbelievably tight (they’ve had a little time to practice 🤣) and put on one helluva show. Glad I got to see them.

Right on, Fil! As always! First vid analysis of a Rush song I have seen of yours. One of my all time favorite bands; saw them live in the early 80’s and always had some difficulty convincing some friends of their monster sound for a three piece. And that was before Geddy started using more keys, especially live. So many great memories; thanks for promulgating to more masses! Rock On! 🤘🏾

First time I saw them was on the Signals tour at the NEC in Birmingham. Until they ended I missed 1 tour due to illness - Presto - but still about 30 times - take a week off work & go & watch Rush 4 times in 7 days. Sweet Memories, rushing on quickly by etc.

Really good analysis as usual the commentary is always as good as the artists your covering. Very natural and off the cuff as well as spot on information about the band. As you well said this is one of their classics that"never gets old".As it happens it's my favorite instrumental not only as a Rush piece but of all rock bands ever. Great job playing as well Alex Lifeson would probably be impressed himself at hearing you play.

I installed carpet in Alex lifesons condo in downtown Toronto and he was the most down to earth guy I ever met and I played a few riffs from Red Barchetta on a sweet acoustic he had in his living room while we were moving furniture from room to room to get his flooring installed!!! Hahaha true story
