British guitarist reacts to Rush's masterclass in ability, subtlety and dynamics

This one was requested a lot so here it is! It's Rush with La Villa Strangiato, some great use of dynamics here.

For those who don’t know. In this video, he smashed his left ring finger a few days before. All blue and purple, looks like the nail is close to falling off. Mad respect for Lifeson.

I'm a Rush fan, but not a Rush megafan. I only saw them live once, but really enjoyed it. So, with that note of moderation, I can honestly say that I find the guitar solo on La Villa Strangiato to be perhaps the single greatest guitar solo ever. It. speaks. to. me.

As a pianist, I absolutely appreciate the dynamics of their playing. It's about being interesting, highlighting certain notes over others, creating mood and emotion. It isn't just about bashing notes out. They use dynamics to tell an emotional story. Truly, masters of their craft.

It's 2023, I've known about Rush for 40 years but never could get into the music. It was actually their interviews, dinner conversations, motor cycle rides, and "blah, blah, blah" videos on KZread, not the music, that got me thinking they were really cool to hang out with. It's been a tough road for me, but I'm finally "getting" the music. I'm starting to think they are in a musical universe all to themselves and everyone else is just looking in with wonder and admiration.

I began listening to Rush back in high school around the time they released "A Farewell to Kings". They were a perfect blend of Yes, Zeppelin, and Cream... I saw them every tour through "Moving Pictures". I listened to and loved Alex's "Lerxst In Wonderland" guitar solo for 43 years before I realized it was in 7/4 time. Yeah, jazz players do that a lot, but who does that in rock? This is why Rush is so awesome. They were able to do extraordinary things and do them so smoothly that you didn't realize how extraordinary they were. You have to pay attention to find all of the golden nuggets in their music.

That's the bottom line, right? Having great songs is paramount to pulling off a great instrumental like this. And this is only a small sample of what Rush are all about. They did admit that Hemispheres was the most technically challenging album to record. Its so cool that they had one side be their great exploration of long soundscapes and thinking man's lyrical genius from Mr. Peart. Then they do the other three songs with a slightly more compact power trio style but both sides equally brilliant and still leaving room for an amazing instrumental. In fact, Rush are also the best instrumental players in progressive rock. They have not one but what, four or five I think and a few Grammy Award winners too?? They have never compromised their ability to have full artistic control over what they decide to do from one album to the next. They know the level of power performance their fans have come to respect but also when they take some risks like they did with Power Windows and Signals, my two favorite 80s snyth keyboard driven releases. How many other bands are as timeless and relevant as Rush?

Of course, he is one of the holy trinity of rock. Alex, Geddy and Neil just will it so and it is. In reality they were the hardest working musicians over their 40+ year career. Not only were they superb individually on their instruments, but then they put in incredible hours of work to make them mesh together and compliment what the other is doing. No group was ever tighter than Rush live. Permanent Waves was the first concert tour I caught them on, but I went to pretty much every tour that followed. There were several bands who were so good live that I tried to never miss an opportunity to catch their latest show, but none more than Rush. I can’t think of any other group whose concerts I enjoyed more than these three guys. I am a musician (guitar primarily) and I have always considered Rush the musician’s musicians. Non-musicians can enjoy them too, but I think that a musician will get more out of the show. If you’re a musician and catch one of their shows, something will impress you, I don’t care who you are.

I've always felt that Alex is the most overlooked member of Rush. He's not "forgotten" by any means, but next to the famous rhythm section, it's easy to forget sometimes what a good guitar player he is. So that's why it's nice to see him rocking out in his younger days. I don't think he does that so much anymore, but I could be wrong. He's still got a great sense of humor, though! Oh, and since you're into progressive stuff, may I request something by Genesis? Supper's Ready is WAY too long, of course, but perhaps the instrumental section of Firth of Fifth? That piece is also a masterclass in ability, subtlety and dynamics.

What a cameleon Alex is. I mean he’s known as the “man of a thousand solos” and most are so different and unique from one another, that it’s hard for me to believe he’s not one of the top 5 greatest guitarists of all time. Incredible genius of a composer. Thanks for reviewing this!

This to me is one of the best guitar solos in all of rock and roll, but sadly most people who consider themselves rock fans have never heard it. One of the under appreciated aspects is the bass drone notes Geddy plays on the Taurus pedals while playing keyboard - they add so much texture.

To say that Alex is putting his soul into every note of this solo, is actually an understatement. And here we are long past Shawn Lane, EVH, Malmsteen, R. Rhodes, and all the '80s hair band killer players..... So, all us rock guitarists who have lived through all that should be immune, or should i say jaded regarding listening to Alex's sort of simple technique... YET, this solo has the power to move you, jaded, or not, typical of almost all of Alex's solos. Such is the magic of this band and the wonder of their music.. There really is nothing else like RUSH, and will never be, and we should be appreciative that we had them in our time to enjoy. Alex was plugged into something that he plugged us into when he played and solo'd. And for me, these days, maybe only Guthrie Govan and a player named Mateus Asato seem to have this same type of magic in their fingers and inside their notes.

a truly amazing band that was able to play truly amazing music with only 3 members.all 3 of them were all over their respective instruments to make them such a tight outfit. Peart on 'percussion' , as he preferred to call it, is an outstanding 'percussionist' and Geddy Lee's Rickenbacker added the depth to compliment Alex Lifeson's wizardry on guitar. in the early years no-one really took them seriously just because they were Canadian and didn't follow the usual style of rock bands of the time. Alex Lifeson was always working overtime while playing and this separated them from the majority of guitar based bands. classically trained musicians that were a pleasure to listen to. it looks like he had a volume control in his pedal board.he genuinely knew how to use all 4 fingers on the left hand- just watch the 'pinky' when he runs up the neck. good choice for a review man

Thanks for doing my suggestion. Alex has so many dynamic solo's throughout his years with Rush. They were really the vanguard of their genre, whether you call it Prog or Prog/Metal, through the late 70's and early 80's. La Villa Strangiato seems to be the Quintessential Alex Lifeson Solo, That's why I requested that one. Perhaps you could do another song by them at some point down the road. Some very famous musicians name all 3 members as being among their greatest influences and inspirations. My very first rock concert when I was a teenager growing up in southern Ontario was Rush at Ivor Wynne stadium Hamilton On. Aug 24 1979. La Villa Strangiato was the encore.
