I really, really like the way you don't shy away from commenting on so many different styles of rock music. I learned a lot from your feature on Suzi Quatro, giving me a whole new way of looking at her and her music.

This gal has a great voice and can really play bass. I never heard of her, but she is very good, She has a very good band. Sounds like she had an interesting story, thanks Fil. I loved the expressions she used on her face to make her show her enjoyment of what she was doing. I really enjoyed it and also her playing the music she wanted.

Great video, FIl. You're spot on about how hard it can be to play bass and sing at the same time, with the vocal melody potentially being at odds with the bassline the singer might be playing. It's much easier to sing while playing chords on guitar when your hands are accompanying the voice rather than playing melody. Thanks!

That had nothing to do with it. Suzi’s music was never pushed in the states her English record producer kept changing labels and her rock material never got any ground. Even so I don’t think the US was ready for Suzi....at that time in the early 70s.

I really love your enthusiasm - being a knowledgeable music fan is easy enough if you put in enough years listening to music, but it's easy to get jaded and start to take great music for granted. Pleas do keep this up!

Suzi also has a "side" group called QSP (Quatro, Scott [sweet], Powell [slade]). When I saw her in 2018 she opened as QSP for around 30 mins, then interval, then back as Suzi Quatro band. The QSP stuff is ok but the classic Quatro is what the fans want to hear. Nice to see old rockers never die though!

I think that I remember her more from the TV show "Happy Days" than as a musician. I didn't get to listen to rock or pop until MTV started because my dad was into country music. I m glad that I got to see the video on Fanny before it was taken down. I didn't get to see the interaction tho. I did track down one of the limited edition 4 CD box sets that was released in the early 2000s. There several great songs on it.

I was checking here to see if tonights analysis was here yet, it wasn't but this was. Suzi Quatro was a real bass player. You can't tell this by the video here but she started playing a Fender Precision Bass at 14 (a gift from her musician father) In defense of no good "hand photography" here I found it tough to find a video (of this song) that featured the bass player, hard to find. Some fleeting seconds with TP and a bit better in a Foo Fighters cover of "Breakdown". Suzi has been quite prolific. She has released 15 studio albums, 10 compilations, and one live album, with total sales exceeding 55 million. OK, tonights analysis is here (darn,it was blocked). Thanks Fil.

I'm showing my age, but I love your videos, so here goes: I was a teenager when Suzi Quatro came on the music scene. She was revolutionary, bc she wasn't a sweet little girl pop singer or folkie, which is what women in the rock & roll world usually were up to that point (w/ the exception of Janis Joplin). Suzi could rock just like the guys. Suzi played as well or better than the guys. Suzi had the swagger. Suzi had the chops. Suzi Quatro & Joan Jett told women that it was ok to love hard driving rock & roll & to PLAY hard driving rock & roll.

It always seems weird to me that Quatro is so much more well-known in the U.K. than the U.S. She was a thing while i was in high-school, but my perception was likely a bit skewed since i was in Cleveland, OH then. Cleveland was a hotbed for new rock in those days, and everyone from Detroit had a shot there. In fact, although Suzi plays down her influences in devising her own pioneer shtick, but there's no way she came out of Detroit at that time without picking up some vibes from the MC5 and Iggy Pop. Suzi is one of those that cultivated a raunchy persona, so maybe peoples' parents kept her underground, a little just like those guys. The laugh was on them, though, because next you had the Runaways, L7, and the Plasmatics. What fun! Anyhow, i'm always trying to think of something to show you, (all), here. I don't think Walter has come up. Watch him give his drummer the stinkface with his opening lick. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y6N3qrOandfAfrg.html

To me as a Brit, and living through the era when Suzi hit the big time in the U.K. (well I was at school), she is 'our' female Jimi Hendrix - another American who like Jimi, made it big first in the U.K. Shame she wasn't as big in her home country, though she did later get fame there of course, and opened the door (or as she says, kicked it down), for rocky/raunchy female artists who followed her.

Suzi was signed by British producer Mickie Most. (Jeff Beck, The Animals) He took her to London and she recorded on his label RAK Records. Her band were all from the UK. She married her lead guitarist co song writer a Brit and they had two children. She was based in England for most of her career. Most and RAK likely had contracts with other companies regarding NorthAmerican releases and promotion. Not a situation where she was going to be heavily promoted here. As an actor she garnered a lot of notice for her role as “Leather Tuscadero” in “Happy Days.”

Can't imagine Suzi or Joan without their guitars belting out a tune. They seem to enjoy being on stage and hitting those high notes almost screaming them out. Around 1979, there was another band with a female lead singer - Blondie, but she was a different type of wild compared to Suzi. The early 70's had some great UK bands like The Sweet, Slade and TRex.

Fil, I like that you featured Suzi Quatro, as I was really a fan of her back in the 70's and one of the bands I played with was on a bill with Fanny as well. I also can relate to the 'acting' association as a performer. In the 60's, after I finished art college and was playing in a rock band, I took a university theater/acting course because I felt that presenting a song as a performer meant 'playing a character' and I wanted any skills I could develop for those perfornances.

Patti did go on to play on the last Fanny album after June Millington left the band. June is the Fanny guitarist in the Beat Club videos. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIulqK96mrKYkZs.html

Being from Michigan, we saw Suzie and her Brother Micheal (keyboard player) quite often in the local bar scenes. She played the Michigan Palace in Detroit several times as a warm up Band. One memorable show was Suzie Quatro, Kiss, and Blue Oyster Cult, in April 1974

I have a patient that has a problem with his neck after an auto accident. He played an Ibanez and I worked with him so that he had less pain. We had to shorten the strap and put a padding on his leg when he played sitting down. Now he is playing on a Gibson and it is at least 2 kg heavier. I know that magicians use wires to create illustions of levitation. Is there such a device for guitars? It would be nice since I think the position causes many problems for guitarists. Another area that could be important would be to have an ergonomic strap.

Very good rundown about this great song. Although I will critique you on a couple of things. This version of Suzi's is from 1978 from the If you knew Suzi album. Suzi had another No 1 hit in 1974 with her signature song Devil Gate Drive. Apart from that you did good with your analysis.

Gotta love any rock chick playing a guitar as big as herself! Always loved Suzi... Also, it's even harder playing a bass line while singing the melody. Suzi had some big hits in Australia in around 1973/74.

A funny little information. You talking about her popularity and hits. In Denmark her 1974 recordings, such as "The Wild One" and "Devil Gate Drive" her actually bigger hits than "Can The Can" and other stuff from the previous year. In 1975 there was a show in danish television. I'm another sure if it was recorded in Denmark. I was just 8 years old at the time. But I remember her playing all the songs we kids knew. And I tell you: at that point almost every schoolboy in Denmark was in love with Suzi. Then she faded. Jumped up again a pair of times. "If You Cannot Give Me Love" and "She´s In Love With You" were hits. But in the late 70´s - to put it that way - most of the boys had taken down their Suzi-poster from the wall, and instead they were kisiing Debbie Harry goodnight. Interesting to hear, that things were so much different over in U.K. - Of course I know she was born in Detroit and all that. But living in U.K. at that time, it was sort of her home base. So it is actually a bit curious, if she wasn't that popular over at your side at the time she peaked in Denmark.

Awesome (again) thanks and cheers! I love all types of music (rock, blues and earlier jazz have a very special place in my heart) as for women rockers like Suzie, Janice, Joan, Lita (and again countless others) the sad thing is that they gave music so much more to music than what they got out of it (don't get me wrong I know they've each achieved a lot and continue to achieve in their careers(sans Janice RIP), but I feel they deserve more notice and you're helping with that!)...with that said and keeping this rockin' women theme...(forgive me if I missed it) but what about something on Rosetta Tharpe? Regardless, keep all your vids coming!

Great musician and role model for many female and male musicians. I like the fact, she was her own self, and carved out a career without sacrificing her integrity to the powers that be who run the music industry . Breakdown is one of my favorite Petty songs, she owned it on this cover. I really like Chris Norman of Smokie and Suzie Quattro's duet and video of Stumblin' In. The chemistry between the two in that video could've melted tungsten in an instant, phew!!!!🔥 Just love the unbridled realism and true musicianship of artists in the Seventies.
