Agreed! I do think money is rapidly eroding the college game just as it has ruined MLB and the NBA, and the NFL to a large extent. But for now you still see an enormous amount of local and regional pride in college teams with many players still representing their home schools. Unlike the NFL where you just have ultra-rich mercenaries who go from one team to the next every couple of years, and a lot of lackluster fan bases.

There’s only a 4 team playoffs (so far) in college football so it’s extremely different than March madness. In college football, losing even 1 game will usually take you off the top 4 spots

Again, Navy, Army and Air Force are military Universities . These guys will become officers in their branch of the service. The Navy also has Marine officers. These are regular universities with the added addition of Military training. These are very exclusive colleges. These are not people from active duty personnel who play football. Active duty personnel are busy protecting the country.

  • @danbaker300

The Army, Navy and Air Force teams are from the officer training academies. They usually play an unorthodox style of offense (one that used to be much more common in the early days of football) because the military physical training requirements are such that they really can't have the more prototypical linemen (big bulky guys). College football was very slow to add a playoff for the championship - as recently as the 1990s, it was just "teams go to whatever bowl game based on their conference, poll voters would decide who finished #1". In 1998, they effectively added a two-team playoff (which naturally had a lot of controversy; there were occasions where three teams finished the regular season undefeated and one didn't get a chance to play for the title). It expanded to four teams in 2014 and will be expanding to 12 in 2024.

I was expecting more Notre Dame for some reason. (Last won it all in 1988, when there really was not a title game mandated, and ironically they had a great game where playoff chances ended for _someone_ -- The Catholics Vs. Convicts game. Notre Dame 31, Miami 30, Miami could have tied but went for the win and dropped the ball in the end zone.) They have had some epic collapses against Miami, USC, Tennessee, Penn State, you name it. Stanford leapt to mind too. At the moment they're basically a top-10 spoiler. (They _have_ beaten Clemson twice in 3 years. And last year, with the expected starter out for the year, they _walloped_ Clemson. And had some stupid losses. Oh well, it is what it is.)

If you are looking November, Penn State-Michigan will be a great one to go to. As a lifelong PSU fan and current student, here is my pitch. Beaver Stadium (home of PSU) is known as one if not the best environments in college sports, and its the second largest stadium. PSU is doing a Stripe Out theme in the stands, which is sick. Also some of the best tailgates you will find, and a great bar scene. Its a relatively large rivalry, but probably a cheaper ticket than a lot of the other rivalries. As for the game itself, both teams will almost definitely be top 10 teams, and both have the upside to win the national title or at least the conference, especially Michigan, The Big Ten is a three team race between Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State who are projected just behind the other two. One of the two teams is virtually guaranteed to be fighting for the conference race and a spot in the Playoffs, possibly both. Michigan is coming off two straight playoff appearances and conference titles, PSU just won the Rose Bowl. Michigan has a chance to assert themselves as top dawg in the Big Ten to stay, PSU has a shot at a program definer and an upset to put themselves at the top of the league. This matchup has generally been a very exciting game when played at Penn State, and went down to the wire two years ago even when Michigan was amazing and PSU was heavily struggling. Can't imagine the potential this game has with two juggernauts. If you want to see a crowd influence a game and a pure college football experience, this is a phenomenal option outside of the most famous rivalry matchups (Michigan-OSU, Auburn-Bama, etc.). Also Auburn is gonna be shit so high probability Bama blows them out. For more proof of the atmosphere of this matchup, watch what happened when they played in 2019 (kzread.info/dash/bejne/iK2k2st9aKq1qLw.html)... PERHAPS the greatest fan moment in college football history. Both have insane RB tandems that are probably the two best backfields in the country. Both defenses are likely top 5 nationally. Not sure exactly about Michigan's preseason All-American/draft projections (though they have lots of stars), but I can speak for PSU having 3-4 projected All-Americans, and 3 projected first round picks (including likely the best lineman and potential first non QB off the board, and the potential first Cornerback off the board). Penn State has a highly recruited new starting QB, Michigan has a great young QB returning. Thanks if you read all that and enjoy whatever game you go to. Super happy to see you guys experiencing college football

I don't know if you guys have settled on which game you want to come and see, but my recommendation would be to go to any of the 8 stadiums that have a 100k capacity. It's tough to beat the atmosphere of that many semi-psychotic fans all in one place. Plus any one of the 8 are almost guaranteed to be a top 25 team. btw the 8 are Michigan, Penn St, Ohio St, Tex a&m, LSU, Tennessee, Alabama, and Texas.

I’ve been a Gator fan for 50 years and of course I love that uniform but man you can’t beat Alabama’s uniform…that’s as proper a football uniform as you’ll find. When they play Ole Miss at home when Ole Miss is wearing the powder blue helmets…that’s as good looking as a football game’s ever going to get. Although Florida’s throwback uniforms against Bama in 2006 is a pretty damn close second.

The Oregon Ducks are super sponsored. I'm 45/65 certainty on whether or not they get new jerseys made for them every game. Like they don't have a set of away jerseys and home jerseys. They play a game and then they get a brand new jersey for the next one because they're sponsored by some big companies. I can't speak for them though.

This will be the final year of the 4-team playoff format, starting next year they are expanding to 12 but it's kind of confusing how they're doing it. The 6 highest rated conference champions will earn a spot in the playoff and the 6 highest rated teams (conference champions or not) will fill out the rest of the field. The 4 highest rated conference champions will be seeded 1-4 and earn a first round bye and the rest of the teams will be seeded in order after that by their rating.

I remember getting back from work with McDonald's during that 2018 Apple Cup in the snow. You'll notice there are a lot of Pac-12 games in this compilation. They've gone 6 years without getting one of their teams in the playoff. Under the 4 team playoff system, you can really only get away with one loss if you're lucky and still get in. Oregon in 2014 and Washington in 2016 are still the only teams in that conference to do that under this system. Utah has won the last 2 Pac-12 football championships in a row, but they did so with multiple losses. They just haven't had a team separate itself from the pack and dominate the conference like we've seen in other conferences during the playoff era.

Next year, there will be a 12 team play-off for the top 12 ranked teams in the highest level of college football. Currently, there is only a 4 team play-off ( 2 semifinal games and the championship). ...A defensive player can tackle a player by grabbing his shirt, but he cannot grab the shirt "collar". ...I agree with you guys that Oregon's green uniforms and duck logo is cool. Also, Syracuse's orange uniforms are cool. I hate the all-black and all-white uniforms many teams wear. They are so boring.

LSU is at Bama this year and both teams are projected to be in the top 3 this year. We also always play them after both teams have a by week so both teams are rested. The playoff committee ranks the top 25 teams each week. after the regular season the top 4 teams play in the semifinals then the championship. but this playoff system is being expanded to 12 teams soon so it will get more complicated than that. college football is weird. before this 4 team playoff which only started in 2014, there was the "BCS championship" which was a computer system that determined the top 2 teams in the country and they would play for the championship. before that system, there was no official playoff or championship. the team that was voted #1 at the end of the polls was considered the champion, so you see multiple teams claim championships in seasons before the modern era.
