British English IPA Variations Explained
Ойын-сауық
British English phonemic alphabets vary in some sounds. Why does this happen? And do the different phonemic transcriptions mean different pronunciations?
In this video we explore this by looking at how dictionaries build their phonemic charts using the International Phonetic Alphabet, in particular how they use the symbols on the vowel grid.
We then chart two different accents onto the vowel grid to see which symbols are most appropriate.
The use of the term ‘symbol’ in the video is in the sense that a diphthong vowel such as /eɪ/ or an affricate consonant such as /dʒ/ are considered one phoneme symbol.

/θaŋks/!
this is brilliant thank you. I guess the dictionaries all claim to be the definers of RP - but its evident by listening to the BBC over the last 50 years how this has changed in any case. Has a lot to do with the class system but that's another story !!!!
Information conveyed probably
Keep going love it👍
