I'll never forget seeing Chara have his jaw turned to jello by a puck (broke in 3 spots), he shook his head a bit and you could see it wiggle. The absolute animal came back the next game with a full cage. Throwing hits within a week.

There are some videos out there of the player's parents reacting to their sons first NHL goal and they are tear jerkers. These parents spent years schlepping their kids to 5 am practices in local freezing ice rinks, adjusting family schedules, scrimping to buy equipment. I'd love to see your reactions to some of these.

Goalies are nuts, last season Jack Campbell felt the moment his groin tore and his side of the conversation after Tkachuck jumped on his head was, "Yeah I tore my groin three minutes ago.", Mitch Marner says something to him and he responds, "No I'm going to finish the game." I can't connect those two sentences, it's like, wait, you literally tore a groin muscle, like ripping a steak, and you are going to finish the game?!? WTF.

TJ Oshie, one of the players on the Washington Capitals (the team I pull for), could barely hold back tears when he was interviewed on the ice at the end of Game 5 of The Stanley Cup Final in 2018, the game wherein my guys won The Cup. His father, 53 year old Timothy Sr., was in the stands, but he had Alzheimer's and watched his son win The Stanley Cup for the first time (TJ's first time winning it) without fully understanding what was happening. Tim Sr. died on May 4th, 2021. TJ spent the first 5 years of his career with the St. Louis Blues, but my Caps FLEECED them for him in 2015 and he was the most important addition to my team in the 2010s. He has been incredible teammate in DC, and is the heart beat of the locker room.

    1) The guy getting hit in the leg at 4:56 at is Gregory Campbell. That puck broke his leg! 2) The guy in blue at 6:40 trying to annoy the goalie is Sean Avery. What he did was so absurd that the next day the league issued a rule change, so that it could be penalized as "unsportsmanlike conduct." It's known unofficially as the "Avery Rule." Another infamous incident involved two famous women he had previously dated, actress Elisha Cuthbert and model Rachel Hunter, who later dated other NHL players. Avery walked over to some reporters and said, without being asked about it, “I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about, but enjoy the game tonight.” He's the only player I know of in any sport who was kicked off his team by his teammates. 3) The announcer at 9:59 who said "full-frontal lobotomy" is Daryl Reaugh. He broadcasts Dallas Stars games and has a unique way with words. There's probably a highlight video of him on KZread. My favorite was when there was a great play involving brothers Jamie and Jordin Benn, who were teammates with Dallas, and Reaugh described it as "double Benn-etration." As far as I know he did not get in any trouble for that. 4) At 12:15, the "redemption story" of the New Jersey Devils in 2012 avenging their 1994 loss to the rival New York Rangers is a bit misleading because the Devils won the Stanley Cup three times in those years. If you look closely you can see that the goalie for both games, 18 years apart, was Martin (pronounced "Mar-TAN") Brodeur. As you can imagine, Brodeur was the only player for either team who played in both games. He played more than 20 years and holds the NHL records for goalie wins, losses, shutouts, and games played. 5) You were spot-on talking about the time and expense of the years of playing hockey before making it to the NHL. I can understand for the elite players, but far less than one percent of the players play professionally, and the majority of them never play in the NHL. In the U.S., and similarly in Canada I've heard, it has become routine for ordinary youth players to also travel. I have a brother with 3 teenaged sons who play hockey. The highest level any of them will play is on their local high school team. My brother, who has been fortunate in his career and likely earns in excess of $200,000, spends more than $5000 annually merely on renting ice time at rinks. (Decades ago, before climate change, more ponds froze and hockey was a "working class" sport. The shallow, man-made ponds that were created in cities in the 1800s when factories ran on water power would quickly freeze and there were far more hockey players in the cities than today. Now most of them come from wealthy suburbs.) There are the additional costs of the equipment, which is hundreds of dollars annually for each child. They play on "travel teams" with other ordinary players. Several times per season my brother or his wife will drive more than 100 km each way for one game. Once or twice per year they will travel hundreds of kilometers for a weekend tournament, requiring hotel stays. Sometimes they are both away, in different states with different kids. My sister-in-law, who is the most tireless person I've ever known, thinks the other "hockey parents" are crazy. And this is all in the densely populated corridor of the northeastern U.S. Youth teams in the rural areas of the U.S. and Canada travel so much they often rent buses.

3:47 He's been in minor league for 7 years, after that season, he went back for 7 more before returning with the Kings last season. His 45-save shutout on debut was also the modern-era record for a goaltender on debut for most saves made.

I remember back in1995 in game 7 of the playoff series between the Capitals and the Penguins when Kjell Samuelsson took a high stick to the face from Michal Pivonka in the second period. He went to the locker room and received over 60 stitches to his face then returned to the ice to continue playing in the 3rd period. Pittsburg won the game and the series. I don't know that there is anyone else in the history of the NHL that showed more toughness...

Not a huge hockey fan but Hockey parents probably have to put in the most work of any. A lot of practices even in the lower levels are held at like 4 am because of the difficulty to get rink times. So few rinks compared to the number of teams makes the time valuable. It takes a lot of dedication and early mornings spent in cold rinks by the players and the parents.
