fighting in hockey is actually against the rules. But it is tolerated because ironically it actually makes the sport safer. It's understood that you have to protect yourself and your teammates and they're gonna do the same for you. If you play dirty and take cheap shots the other team is not going to tolerate that and they will make you answer for it. Guys know this and thus are more inclined to behave themselves because they don't wanna catch a beat down.

it allows the players to essentially police themselves. And it helps keeps from those bench clearing brawls you see in American football or baseball when teams just get fed up with each other and don't care anymore.

Pretty simple for fighting, it’s a way for the players to police the game themselves. There are codes in place. There are expectations in place. If you cheap shot a player, you know you need to answer the bell. If you punch a guy when he’s down, you need to keep your head on a swivel. It actually helps keep the game cleaner.

Hockey players police themselves in a lot of ways. If you hit a teams goalie, star player expect an answer. Teams usually have guys who take care of those things, teams on both sides understand the unwritten rules.

The reason that fighting is allowed in hockey is really pretty simple to explain, but somewhat more difficult to actually understand. Hockey is played at a very high speed, and the 1 referee can not see EVERYTHING that happens, so there is room for a lot of cheap shots in hockey, compared to other sports. Well, there is an unwritten code between hockey players/teams. If you throw a dirty shot at one of our players, and the ref doesn't see it and no penalty is called, you can bet that the next line change will see what used to be called the team's 'policeman' will be on the ice the next time the player that took the dirty shot is on the ice, and a hard check will come, and then a fight. So teams tend to stay away from playing dirty because they know that if one of their players tries it, he will have a fight on his hands soon after. Same thing if you run a goal tender (goalie). Just watch what a team will do when the other team runs into their goalie! Mayhem! And ever since they added the instigator of a fight rule (where the guy who starts the fight takes an extra 2 minute penalty, giving the other team a power play), this has caused an increase in the dirty shots since now a team protecting their players, will be short-handed. Can you imagine if Wayne Gretzky did not have protection back then? The other teams would have run him every chance they had, but Dave Semenko made sure that if you tried it, he would have it out with you and you would not do that again any time soon. That moment in Chicago when they took the lead with 59 seconds left, and then won the Stanley Cup, they were so hyped because it had been over 50 years since the last time Chicago had won the Stanley Cup! And the only place I could think of off hand that would probably go crazier, is if Montreal were to finally win another one. Okay, so they won in 1993, but we are so spoiled here in Montreal (having won the most Stanley Cups of all the teams, in fact, they have more than the 2nd and 3rd place teams put together! I also remember when Montreal won 5 Cups in a row, the only team to EVER do that, and they did it TWICE!!!) they will explode when they win their next one.

Fighting is allowed because it acts as a self policing mechanism. With how fast hockey moves, it comes with a lot of intensity and emotion, causing players to do things they shouldn't do and refs can miss it. Basically, if you do something stupid or dangerous, you now how to deal with the punishment of someone beating the breaks off of you. It mitigates malicious actions and in a way makes the game safer by acting as a deterrent Edit: its technically not "allowed", as it is a 5 minute major penalty, but it just doesn't result in suspensions and fines etc.

Okay... Fighting isn't "allowed." You will be penalized for it, you may suspended for it, you may be kicked out of the league for it. But... it is tolerated, and the reason is simple: Controlled aggression is less injurious than uncontrolled aggression. They're big boys, the NHL wouldn't be the first time they fought on skates. So let them get it out of their system, and once 1 player goes down, the officials (linesmen) move in and break it up.

Agreed. Hockey has two sets of rules. One is written in a book and policed by the refs. The other is an unwritten code that protects players from dangerous players and games getting out of hand. Essentially, you put my players health in danger or act dishonorably, expect to lose some teeth. For that reason, fighting prevents injuries.

That tribute from Martin St. Louis to his mother is more meaningfull than you probably think. Martin was relatively small player at 5ft 8in. He was told is entire life he would be to small to play in the NHL, which was his dream. His mother was always there to support him, to tell him to believe in himself and to help him achieve his dreams. Martin was not even drafted in the NHL, he made his way through by playing in the AHL before having his chance. He never gave up. He went on to win the Art Ross trophy as the league leader in points, the Hart Memorial trophy as the most valuable player AND the Stanley cup in 2003-2004. 9 years later, in 2012-2013, he won his second Art Ross trophy at 37 years old.

Hockey is a highly intense, highly charged, physical sport. Fighting despite what people think solves a multitude of things. It's creates unity knowing your fellow players have your back no matter what. It allows players to be a part of regulating their own sport by making sure everyone knows what is and isn't allowed. Likewise, it can change the tempo of a game in an instant. There are less retaliatory predatory hits because players both agree to the fight, and they adhere to some unwritten rules that are enforced despite being unwritten. Both players have to be a willing combatant, You don't continue to fight a player when he's down among others. It's our sport, the fans and the players and the players and for the players they are willing to fight and defend it and their team.

Knowing you will get your face punched in for playing dirty is more of a deterrent than being penalized. Having enforcers on the ice prevents more injuries than a fine or suspension. Self-policing works better than more rules and regulations. Plus, most fans stand up and cheer every time there is a fight, and a good scrap often changes the momentum and hypes up a losing team.

After watching some of your hockey videos I decided to throw you a subscription. You seem to like what you are doing. I like that. Back in the day there used to be team members whose only job was to protect the skill players. They were big men and were there to fight. It made the other team think before trying to cheap shot one of the better players on the opposing team. It's not as prevalent today as even the big bruisers nowadays have pretty darn good skills. Watch some old fight videos. It was brutal back then. I recommend some "Hockey Fight in Canada" videos. That will lead you to Don Cherry. You need to devote a whole video or two to Mr. Cherry. He was one of a kind. Plus, it's two men wearing skates on ice. It's pretty hard to get a good punch in so, shockingly, there aren't many bad injuries from fighting. So, the refs let them go until they both are obviously tired or they fall to the ice. Most of the injuries come from boarding and blind-siding. Those are hits on unaware players. That's why the number one rule in hockey is :"Keep your head up!" And if you watch, most fights end with both guys smiling and congratulating the other guy on a good fight. Not all, but most. Now check out some Pavel Datsyuk. Number 13 from the Detroit Red Wings. The Magic Man. You've seen his little chip shot goal twice in your previous reactions. Best hands the NHL ever saw. I'm a biased Red Wings fan but it's still the truth!!!!!!! Good luck with your channel. You seem like a nice guy. Peace

Had a coach tell us fighting was part of hockey because if we ever have to go to war it takes a lot longer to become proficient at hand to hand combat than it does to shoot a rifle. Being that we were pretty young still it was kind of funny how most of the team wasn't really sure if he was BSing or not.

So fighting was always apart of the game and they just never took it out

They can go in the penalty box be suspended or get kicked out the sport for going too far in the fights... If you hit someone after they already got knocked down for example. However for the most part the NHL has kept players and teams that police themselves. If you go out of your way to keep cheap shotting a star player some stocky 6'7 tall 250 pound enforcer is going to come on the ice to deal with you. Cheap shots and dirty play is more likely to cause real injury or death than the scuffles you see. That's the idea anyway.

Fighting is there because every one carries a weapon and some times players use that weapon as a weapon. The game is fast and physical so things get amped up quiet a bit. i played hockey for 55 years and have seen it all. You expect certain dangers and events in games when you play and accept it. But the dirty stuff with sticks and hitting from behind is not part of the accepted code of conduct. Too stop this dangerous practice hockey secretly endorses fighting. Necessary part of game. The pre meditated stuff has too go but its needed. Put it this way i was at a junior A game in Ottawa like 40 years ago( junior A players 16 to 20 years old). Incident breaks out players pile on top of each other etc. One guy gets out of the pile looks at buddy being held down by ref and makes a kicking motion at the dude on the ice. Not a big obvious wind up but he kicked at the guy. Every body saw it. The crowd was all hyped up because of the fighting going on and then the guy took that kick and there was dead silence. All hell broke loose after that. Needed in the game.

Why is there fighting allowed in hockey? Everyone has armor and a weapon. It is understood that, without respect to the game and opponent, it would simply be armed combat. So, if a player shows a lack of that respect, they do so knowing another player may grab their collar for a manual attitude adjustment. Used to be, and still should be, “I’ll see ya in 5min tough guy, if ya wanna try that again!!” Simply put, every player has to have their own “line in the sand” of sorts. That line is the border between an opponent playing you hard, and playing dirty. Inside that arena, the game will destroy you if you let it. When, not if, someone try’s that. They will continue until you stop them. Usually, win or lose, after a fight and a 5min breather, the game will clean up and settle down. Like both teams remember,”we could just beat the heck out of each other, but we’d rather win at hockey!”

Fighting if I have Gretzky on my team and you just start running him into the ground pounding him hard i can do the same to your best player and soon our 2 best players are out with injuries or I can beat the crap out of the offending player and that becomes the punishment you will receive ever time you run my Gretzky players regulate the game
