For people still wondering about the armored vehicle and security entrance at the Mall: The reason is 10-15 years ago there has been a series of terror attacks from the Xinjiang sub-branch of AlQaida called ETIM (East Turkestan Islamic Movement) who want to build something like ISIS. They killed several hundreds of people (in the same way that we have seen attacks in Paris, Brussels, Berlin), including killing Uyghurs as ETIM declared them as "infidels", because things like drinking wine is common in Xinjiang. The guards are there to instantly react when ETIM appears again and the security checks are for preventing ETIM to carry bombs into populated public areas.

The vastness and diversity of China’s biggest province in terms of area. Much of minority Uyghurs are based in the southern half - the Tarim Basin area under the Taklimakan Desert. There are lots of infrastructure, mining and industrial projects recently in the southern half - more notably deep-well oil and gas fields, petrochemical and chemical plants, minerals processing, logistics hubs, newer railway lines and industrial parks manufacturing machinery, plant and equipment, metal goods, textiles, clothing, chemicals, components and foodstuffs.

i've just discovered this "westerners in xinjiang" universe. Yours is a very interesting outlook.

You mean Kashgar (Kasmir is in Pakistan)? I believe the residents of the original old city of mud houses have been relocated to more sturdy houses of brick and look ore comfortable for modern living. It has been preserved for tourists who are interested to get themselves lost in the maze, but the houses are really dilapidated.

Only in Xinjiang and possibly other northwestern provinces. We have mutton skewers elsewhere in China but they are all pathetic in comparison. I want to visit Xinjiang for the meat. The Arabic script should be written from right to left, and not as shown on the video at 0:30. (I don't know Uighur but I can read the Arabic script.) And, where possible, the letters should be joined (like in handwriting), and not as isolated letters.
