Was contemplating another set as well. I did the 2 - almost seems like is silly not to add another set. Cheap easy mod. Only other thing I did was to add some foam tape to sure up the seal betw light and metal.

I just purchased and installed the same light in my multi pro tailgate. Nice inexpensive little mod. Thanks for sharing. It would be great to have a pair of Bluetooth speakers in the other two spots next to the recently installed lights that you could connect to your phone for tailgating.

If there was a better system then the Kicker ones, I would entertain it. The Kicker ones are nice but in my opinion just okay for performance

I bought the GM light kit probable 2 years ago. I gave up on installing them because I did not want to break the original inserts. I did not think about removing 1 would help with the others. The retainers on the OEM inserts I have look different.

@@Lerchcon -- I got mine before they sold out. Install went easy. However, that center harness was a little awkward to get in. Kinda wish I would have bought two sets (for all four slots) and piggybacked the power connection.

Had the tailgate light option selected on my build and think they were $260 CAD (I'm in Calgary). The Amazon link you have shows these at $59. I'll be taking that option off... thanks for that

Thanks, I don’t think the Kicker system would hold up in my climate and constant slamming of the tailgate. I suspect the voice coils in the speakers would go first.

Liked your video. Good instructions. I am having difficulty disconnecting the plug that’s connected to the back of the tailgate. Unlocked the plug and still difficult to disconnect Any advice how to disconnect Thanks in advance.

small plyers to depress the tab or a flat screw driver to depress the tab while pulling apart. The red lock tab is just to stop the tab from being depressed and releasing the plugs

I just installed these on my 2021 AT4 and they work fine when I turn on the exterior lights from inside the cab but I cant get them to turn on from the key fob. How do you turn then on from the key fob?? Thanks for the instructive videos.

I thought so too, but I feel it would take a beating in our -40 climate. Speaker voice coils may not survive since they’d be frozen for 6 months a year

I've got the Kicker kit, picked up my truck in February so will have to wait and see how they fair next winter....but I have to say that they are quite disappointing. My JBL charge 4 Bluetooth speaker probably sounds better.

I used to be a big car audio guy, and there is nothing about that large hollow tailgate space that would make it a good enclosure for speakers. In my opinion

Yeah there is zero low end, but the speakers do sound clear. I've been considering taking the Kicker system out to install the lights. With work I'm constantly opening/closing my tailgate and it still blows my mind how much heavier the tailgate is vs my 2014.

I have those kicker tailgate speakers. I wonder if I could still hook these lights up?

They are designed to work with the cargo light. Way before I did this install, I did a cargo light mod that turns them on with the reverse lights or fob unlock at night

Quick question, do you still have you're spacers installed, i was watching a video about the pros and cons about wheels spacers and made me kinda worried 😆 im running 2" spacers and i haven't noticed any problems but will be nice to know if you still have them and if you do how do you feels your truck with them!

These work great and an easy install but I have to hit the button on the dash to turn them on. My unlock button on my key fob doesn't turn on the cargo lights. Is there an option I missed?

BoostAutoParts sells a cheap mod to make them come on with the reverse lights, which do turn on when you press unlock (if dark enough outside)

So I just installed this on 2022 evulation refresh, it only comes on from cab when I push cargo lamp button. I'm guessing I need the cargo /back up light mod from boost. Can you confirm please?

Simple but effective

The lights only come on if you have the cabin lights turned on (just like that rear camera light), whereas, the bed LED lights always torn on during the unlock process...

Hey Don, hope all is well on your end, been loving all your insight and upgrades on your vehicle, through you I have installed some of my own. I had a quick question for you, if you don't mind, with all the additional lighting you have installed " Light up Logo" "Front Grill light bar" "Rear Putco light bar" " rock lights" " Led light upgrades" and now the Tailgate step down lights, have you encountered any battery issues? lights not as bright? Have you managed to install a 2nd battery? Is this an area of any worry?

Don was curious I have a 2024 GMC 1500 with retractable running boards . Would like to add LED lights for running boards. Can I tie the lights into the harness of the running board motors

It may be possible. Affixing the LED strips you decide on will probably be the part of the puzzle. You could hook up a test light now just to test the motor hook-up theory. Then go from there

Hey Don. I recently purchased a 2023 Sierra AT4 and it’s all that I wanted and more. I have been following you for some time now and am hoping to do some of the mods you have done to my own. I have a few light mods on order from Boost Auto (fog light and cargo lamp in reverse kits) and also have installed the Amazon special multipro tailgate lights which work great except not like yours. In your video you unlock your truck with your key fob and the cargo lights in your box come on as well as your tailgate lights. I installed mine exactly the same as in your video (which is the only way you can) however my box cargo lights come on but not the lights on the tailgate. They do come on with the switch in the cab however so I know they have power and are working. Did you do other modifications to make this happen on yours or I wonder if there is something different between a 2021 and a 2023.

Mine come on because of the cargo light mod working with the reverse lights. So when it is dark enough outside and I press unlock, they’ll come on momentarily

I bought and installed the gm brand step lights a couple weeks ago on my truck, the fit and finish is nicer but I will admit the ones you installed for less $ seem a bit brighter (at least on video) lol.

Been fine. Only thing I learned in my comments is that some put a little caulking on the edges to help secure them. Mine haven’t become loose, but I could see it being a thing based on the low cost for these

Hello Don . I’ve run across a problem that after watching you work on these steps you may know the answer. 2017 Silverado Ltz. The rear bumper has the corner steps. I found a pair that has lights and they work off of the turn signal’s. My problem is that I can’t get the old ones out. I’ve tried to follow the instructions. ( What little bit that there is) But the screw that is on the inside of the bumper towards the trailer hitch. Is just something that I cannot seem to get to! I can just barely see it to begin with. Any help?

Hey, just was wondering if these have stayed in well or did you have to use some kind of silicone to keep them tight? I am about to order and thought about even spraying plastidip on them to take shine away

One has rattle loose only a little a couple times. I think a couple small dabs in the corners would be fine. You could plasti dip the shine off, but I never really found it bothersome

Don, I have recently discovered your video’s and they are great. I ordered these lights but I am having a hard time removing the plug from the tailgate socket. The red tab is up -not sure what I am doing wrong. Am I missing something?

When the red tab is pulled outward, there should be a plastic tab that will need to be depressed. Sometimes needle nose pliers work better than fingers. Or press with a small screwdriver

I found it easier to remove the plate with the two 10mm screws and remove it from the plug. Hard to do otherwise.

You should do a video to upgrade the interior LED lights which are very weak. I’m talking about the two in the front driver and passenger and the two in the rear.

@@Donslife haha I was kinda hoping you did! They aren’t bulbs, so a little bit more complex, but not by much.

Before I started, I hit my unlock on key fob tail lights blinked and leds in the bed came on but the tailgate light did not. This is on a 2023 AT4 1500. The only way I can get the tailgate light on is to enable the cargo lights and they won't go off unless you disable them, button above headlights.

You need the BoostAutoParts cargo light mod. It makes the lights come on with the reverse lights. So your ambient light sensor needs to think it’s dark enough out too

Just installed mine also had the wrong plug that was easy to fix take an exacto knife there's a little Channel or a blocker that doesn't line up just cut that off then it plugs right in but the lights black Frameworks were very junkie when I first cliped them into place it was very sloppy, so I only did one at a time but then, I could not get it to come back out without actually breaking the tabs off because it's such a hard plastic not flexible like the factory inserts. So then I went ahead and took double-sided black 3m body trim tape and went around the edge and along with a little bit of black silicone to make them fit much tighter.... if you put them in with nothing they're very sloppy and loose so be sure to take tape and silicone them around the edges before you put them in because when you pop them back out it is very difficult to do so without breaking the little tabs off mine came out of the state of Georgia from Apollo LED inc from an ebay seller I believe.

Probably the easiest is splicing the wires and some soldering

I installed these and I can’t get them to come on when unlocking. They seem to only come on when hitting the button on the inside for cargo lamps. My bed lights come on with unlock but not the step lights. Any ideas?

I installed them on a 2022 Sierra Denali, they do not come on by pressing the key, neither does the light next to the camera. They only come on if I push the bed light button inside the cab, or turn on the bed camera. I uninstalled them and the light next to the camera only turns on with the switch or camera. Is this normal?

I have a BoostAutoParts.com mod for the cargo lights that will make all of the rear facing lights come on with the reverse lights. It was also dark above my front window (light sensor) so the lighting all came on with the unlocking of the doors. Super simple mod if you want that feature

I have 2023 trailboss Lt Diesel. I hooked up the light in the talegate too..but my lights don't come on with unlock. They only work with the button inside...

I have the same problem.

So mine only work when I turn the cab light on or the you know the bed cab light if I just hit locker unlock they do not turn on is on the dash and turn on the cab light for the step lights to turn on

I also added a mod from Boost auto parts that turns on all of the rear facing lights including the back up lights when I unlock the truck with the fob, or push the cargo light button. If it is too bright outside, only the cargo button will trigger it since the ambient light sensor on the dash senses it is too bright outside.

I am not going to say never, but with the colder weather here for 6 months a year, I don’t know if they’d survive or get used often. I have a stereo system in the garage, boat and holiday trailer too

Not sure honestly. Is there wiring still? Do you have any cargo lights anywhere?

I tried for an hour to disconnect the inner tailgate light. Yes I moved the red snaplock backward, however your "squeeze and pull" description needs to be better defined. I had to watch another video for what it is, that needs to be "Squeezed". However it was too late and now I have to have the dealership rewire that plug.

Sorry man, lots of viewers claim the instructions were just fine. I could have been more specific and stated to move the red tab lock out of the way so that the tab can then be squeezed or depressed to release the plastic clasp all while gently pulling the cable free from the receptacle.

So middle of the day I just did this mod. Then when I pressed unlock my lights in tailgate didn’t come on. Sensor must sense daylight. At night it worked and turned tailgate light on when unlock is pressed.

You’re ambient light sensor would be the culprit

So I waited until night and the only way that light comes on is if I press the button in the cab for the bed lights. I played around with it and can’t figure out how yours worked. I wonder if it is an added feature if you have all the cameras? I have a pretty loaded AT4 just not all the cameras. I just have rear camera with trailer cam. Not sure. Oh well. It would be nice if it worked when I drop the tailgate without having to press the light button on the left side above the headlight knob

@@Lerchcon you can add the BoostAutoParts Cargo light mod. It will turn on all of cargo lights when the reverse lights come on. I made a video a while ago on that one

Not sure if I will anymore. With my Canadian climate I am not sure they will last long through the winter

As much as these trucks cost you think they would have put that in there already it would have cost them (GMC) a whole three or four dollars per truck. And a switch that automatically turns them on when the tailgate is opened!
