Good video. My only thought is that you should lap the valves first before grinding the valves stems to the final measurement.

Thanks. This is helpful. I see a lot of videos for the OHV Briggs & Stratton, but I needed this one on the older-style engnies. My TroyBilt lawn edger was running great, but suddenly it has developed a hard-starting problem. I need some better tools to tackle a rebuild, but I think I have determined that there is no piston slap. It seems I have zero clearance between the valve stems and the push rods. Is that even possible?

Oh ya it is possible. Valves go out if adjustment all the time. I would readjust your valve before you even try a rebuild

I ahve the exact issue. Valves are no slack of any kind. and sh wont start. ocassional pop.

gr8 vid I have a briggs flat head that seems to loose compression when hot. so I am thinking I have a value issue. I know the coil is fine and the plug is fine

Ya. Valve clearance could be a issue

Oil wrench works real good to get that round muffler off

Change oil every season use high zinc racing oil put 1 oz marvel oil per gallon of gasoline you probably don't have to do this I have a 2 hp B&S flat head on a mc lane edger 55 years old. Starts 1st or 2nd pull runs strong

Oddly enough I just filmed a video that has these tips and others. Will be coming out in a few weeks

I wish you had shown the act of grinding a tiny bit off the valve stem. Maybe I missed it.

Best way is to get a flap disc for a grinder and just touch the end very briefly or the side of a wheel on a bench grinder

nothing is going to be a tool for that. I fiddled for an hour or more to get those springs back. I got the tool and some needle=nosed pliers.
