    Took my mower to a repairman. He told me it had no compression, a stuck valve, and to buy a new mower. Took it home and found this video. Took it apart, found the ring the valve seats against had come loose. Tapped it back in to place and put the mower back together. Started on the first pull. Don't know how long it will last, but for now, you saved me the cost of a new lawnmower! Thank you!

    glad to hear you got your engine fixed. if the valve seat does work itself loose again you may need to take a nail or center punch and pein over the aluminum around the seat to help it stay in place.

    Thanks for the video. I never took engine off the lawnmower before. Same issue here, no compression on my Brggis engine so I took the engine cover off (after watching your video) , upper valve ring popped off from the valve rim which caused valve from going back in. Flush the ring with the valve then gently tap the valve in. Fixed it!

  • @bbbjim1fixedit

    @bbbjim1fixedit

    every engine has slightly different valve lash spes. Typically ,005 to ,007 on intake and .007 to .009 on the exhaust. On the head bolts I just tightened them in a crossing pattern until tight, I am not sure if the L head engine has a torque spec. I wish you the best on your repair.

    Nice video. I have a similar B&S engine on a Craftsman push mower which is burning oil and smokes out of the muffler. I have already put a new head gasket on and cleaned the valves, though I did not grind the exhaust valve. Compression test showed 60 PSI, but smoke is still coming from the muffler and it is still burning oil. Others have told me the problem is the piston rings most likely, but wouldn't my compression test be lower if the rings were bad? I'm also getting some oil in the air filter. Do you think grinding that exhaust valve might help? Is there something else I'm not thinking of. Sears Parts direct guy said compression test should be between 40 to 60 PSI, so I'm sorta confused. Thanks if you can help.

  • @bbbjim1fixedit

    @bbbjim1fixedit

    2 жыл бұрын

    If you have 60 psi of compression it is unlikely the rings. I made another video of smoking engine fix, and you will likely need to pull the exhaust valve if not seating tightly. I wish you the best on your repair. Link to video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZG2aw6d7ebzfh9o.html

    Super late response, but if someone else reads this. Something simple to look at is to make sure you only fill your oil to the full mark on the dipstick. I have seen people fill the oil until it is almost coming out the tube. It will definitely smoke then 🙂

    Thanks for this - I got my B&G 725EX series fixed up. The intake (bottom valve) wasn't seating. I had to file off almost a full millimeter. The only trouble I ran into was that I didn't have anything to use as a spring compressor. But, I got it put back together. I started with 40psi compression. Finished with 100psi. How long this 'fix' lasts is anybody's guess.

    Indeed lapping will improve compression, most people don't have the stuff to do that, and I wanted to keep the video from being too long.

    I have a similar engine with 63 PSI on compression test. Will hold for at lease 5 miniutes. Is that enough compression to get it to start? Will not start - has spark and I used starting fluid - nothing. I notice it looked like you replaced the coil also. Did you not have spark or was it weak or something. Thanks for any advice.

    this engine was in bad shape, lapped the valves and I did have the head gasket leak again, had to flatten the head along with the coil no spark. 63 psi is low yet it should start, will be low on power. you may wish to look at the flywheel key, if sheared your spark will be off. I wish you the best on your repair

    How did it start with 30 lps of compression? Was your gauge off?

  • @bbbjim1fixedit

    @bbbjim1fixedit

    Жыл бұрын

    It did start yet it was low on power and I later found the head was warped and the head gasket not sealing the best. after those repairs it was about 80 psi

  • @carlodonnell146
    @carlodonnell14610 ай бұрын

    in spite of the new head gasket the compression did not seem to be very high 50? is that because of the compression release system that these small engines have?

  • @bbbjim1fixedit

    @bbbjim1fixedit

    10 ай бұрын

    I later found out the head was a bit warped and the head gasket was leaking. I resurfaced the head and lapped the valves. it now has almost 75psi which is still low yet on a 20 year old engine it is likely the best it will be.

    thanks for explaining;I guess when changing a head gasket it always good practice to resurface the head and the block too, sometimes the block is the biggest problem. Thanks again

    an over head valve has an adjuster built in the rocker, this is an older flat head (Lhead) engine and as it wears this is the way to adjust the valve lash.
