Absolutely love your videos stu...found them only last week and must have watched them all at this stage. Thinking of trying brickwork after only doing blockwork here in ireland. Here in my exp we leave the verticle damp about an inch outside the edge of the blocks in the window to keep it tight to the window. Maybe it doesnt matter??? Keep up the great work man.

Alan hunter, you have to put a 4 inch dpc all the way up back of external block that's what a vertical dpc means, stu knows what he's doing believe me I know. And he has wall ties every 450mm or every two courses on block 6 courses on brick as should be. He even has 150 bearing either side of his lintel 👍 decent solid work mate if you ask me.

How do you generally find the bonding between mortar and thermalite blocks? I found them to be quite repellent of moisture and my mortar didn't bond unless I soaked the blocks!! Also, the internal walls in my loft at the gable ends, they are all loose and almost just stacked on each other, so I'm obviously not the only one who has has issues getting them to bond!!

You're supposed to put extra wall ties in around openings, (not fewer) and there are only a few on one side that I can see. A cavity wall without ties doesn't act as one structure, so is much, much weaker against the wind and not restrained laterally if you have heavy loads on the internal leaf. You should have a look at building regs and learn the typical requirements
