Brian May: Youve Got To Hide Your Love Away - Microconcert #9 - 31 March 2020

Lots to explore!!
BRIAN MAY:
"Tou’ve got to hide your love away - MicroConcert number 9.
A favourite John Lennon song - from the fabulous Beatles ‘Help’ album. An easy song to pick up the rhythm guitar part for. Guitar players note that the little finger of the left hand stays on that third fret of the top string almost the whole time !! All through the verses it provides a kind of bell-like clang - and only in the choruses does the top string become free to play a little counter melody. I don’t have an acoustic guitar here in my isolation, so I’ve used an un-amplified electric - a Gibson SG - to me one of the most beautiful guitars ever. It’s keeping me company ! And just fingers - no pick. To me, playing rhythm guitar is a noble art. It’s not all about wheedling ! Laying down a chordal base for a song really takes you into the heart of its structure.
And -Yes - I have obviously lost track of what day it is. It was like an old-fashioned Sunday in our street today - and it will be that way for a long while now, methinks. Unless there are more surprises in store for us. We are in an unknown land now.
Cheers all - Bri"

I have never underestimated the magic of The Beatles songs. Their music still reminds us that a good melody and heartfelt lyrics sung with conviction is everlasting, and more powerful than any technical skill and virtuoso expertise. Not everyone gets it, but for those of us who do, thank you for reinforcing the belief that a good song should be able to be stripped down to its basic chords and sung melody and still stand on its own. Everything else is just decoration. Sing and play on, Brian. I quite enjoyed this. I only wish you’d played an acoustic guitar instead of an electric but it’s okay. Bravo! There’s a Beatle Fest in the NYC area every year. This year it had to be moved to October 9. They had a virtual fest at the end of March. I’m going to share this with some of the fest goers. If you ever want to play, there’s a great house band and one or two of the British Invasion legends always plays every year along with people who worked with one or more Beatles. They’d love to have you, even if just for a video performance, I’m sure!

I hear the phrase 'bigger than the Beatles' thrown about from time to time but I think Brian will agree the fact that they could churn out massive hits on what seemed like a weekly basis at the time is testament that we will never see the like again.Stay safe everyone we have a way to go yet .

There is another quote made in the 1990s I believe from Brian that kind of addresses part of your comment. At that time Oasis was the "next Beatles" and he said something like " No one can outdo The Beatles, not even Oasis." Nice to hear real talk from an artist and not the modern day wishy washy nonsense of kissing behind and not offending anyone they usually engage in.

True, heavily influenced at that point as you say but of course Dylan's influence is felt entirely on john's songs in the earlier beatles for sale album. Still the shift of his voice from one verse to another in the forementioned song, not only shows a technical command of his voice but how to use it in favour of what the song needed to convey lonliness and dispair..

You’re an amazing person and I thank you for all these videos and messages you’re giving us. It’s inspiring and giving hope. And the way you’re talking of the Beatles show how modest and humble you are. I’m a HUGE fan of the Beatles and Queen... I’ve always been one. My respect for you has grown so so much. Thank You and May God Bless You.

Hi dear Mr Brian, it's amazing 'speak' with you about great music just like with a good friend...it's like when you were young with your oldschool friend: feeling the same excitement for that music brings you to want to write your good music too. Yes the magic of early days...but remember that for us Queen music is that magic, and you are for us what Paul McCartney is for you. Thank you

Not often do I cry on these things, but that song....... Could not have been any better unless Lennon himself was doing it. This man keeps the faith.
