The Absolute Edition is an embarrassment of riches - as revelatory as the Year One set. It has both the Bolland and Higgins versions, with the Higgins on a rougher paper stock. Plus the script and more. Worth seeking out

It is weird how they chose to make the the original coloured version ‘faux vintage’ by putting it on newsprint style paper stock whereas it was originally on better quality paper and a ‘deluxe’ book. It works for Year One as that feels authentic but the Absolute Killing Joke feels like it’s needlessly apeing the Year One Absolute in that way.

Three things- 1. Brian Bolland is awesome. Thank you Mr. Bolland for your time. It amazes me that, from the comfort of my home, I can listen to one of the great artists of our time discuss his work. 2. Camelot 3000 needs some love on the channel. 3. Look up Carol Day by David Wright. Because of this interview I just looked him up. HOLY CRAP! What a master! Another great one guys!

So interesting to hear Bolland's approach to color - and that he is aware that no environmental light affects how he colored the book. You think about how interior shots are usually tinted a little blue or that anything lit by artificial light has some warmth that it spreads around - it is very much a choice to keep the colors without any environmental light. I think that is where Higgins excelled in the colour; you are drawn into the environment of the madness of his colors. Not to take away from Bolland's version, but in terms of story, Higgins' color seems to draw you in. If you took Bolland's color and put a filter over the indoor and dramatically lit panels - it would make that color sing.

Good to see Brian back on the channel! Always love hearing the process of these titans of illustration. Next time he's on, get him to do an episode on his Walter the Wobot comics and see his reaction to his old comedy 1 pager comics. I VASTLY prefer the British artists black and white stuff. Like I'm so used to 2000ad from back in the day where it was in black and white so it's what I'm used to. Colouring doesn't really add much to these guys work for me, it's like seeing V for Vendetta with the colour reprints. I understand that most comic readers prefer colour, but I love me black and white. Would LOVE it if you could get Mike McMahon on the channel. I'd love to see people give Mike McMahon more notice. Dudes a legend.

Upvote for Mr McMahon - although he never had the Mooreian fortune of a Watchmen or Killing Joke to forever seal his reputation, McMahon was (for me) the third corner of the Bolland/Gibbons triangle, the perfect counterpoint to their precision. Book Palace do have copies I believe of the Apex McMahon Dredd and I long for similar treatment of his Slaine work, however brief. McMahon had a direct influence I would say on the Deadline crowd, but even Mignola and Miller share the DNA I think. Incredibly kinetic, but like the late Kevin O'Neill, a strong hardware designer too.

I love this video. I always thought that the John Higgins colour worked because this book is set in Joker's own territory, inside the fairground funhouse so it makes sense that the colourway reflected that. I can see why he'd want it to be his vision though. Great video, Brian seems like a lovely man.

I think I'm gonna watch this one like a 100 times. Bolland is an extreme wealth of information on how to make comic book art/or art in general. He has made art work traditionally in pen and ink, he has honed his technical skill... and he made that transition to digital. And STILL, he continues his craft as more and more technology (to create visual art) expands and evolves. He never stops learning, from others and from his past work. That is why he has always been my ideal artist, of any medium.

The first time I bought The Killing Joke, it came with the updated colors (I didn't know at the time). I couldn't put my finger on it, but something felt off and I couldn't get into the story. I later found out that I bought a recolored version. I managed to get my hands on an original colored version and MY GOODNESS it was so much better. The insanity and despair were infinitely better portrayed with the OG colors. I couldn't get enough of this comic. Same thing happened with Watchmen.

I have to admit I read the killing joke with Bolland coloring first - still prefer the 'original' - but it's not like with other books where I hate one version or think that one is far superior... for me it more shows that coloring can add another layer to a book and impact it profoundly in tone and atmosphere.

I am a strange fan, as I first read the deluxe but still prefer the original coloring. I do understand how Brian was upset since it’s not what he pictured, however, his point that it’s supposed to be eraserhead, I still get that vibe with the original coloring. The “psychedelic” coloring is simply a “jokerized eraserhead”. I feel the monochrome coloring loses the impact that it’s supposed to have with the present to past transitions, I feel they’re much more powerful with the color. The coloring feels like a true joker memory and the black and white is like Batman telling the story rather than joker (in my opinion but the man himself hates it so it’s the George Lucas argument in comics!)

I bought this book upon its release and thought I had examined and re-examined it a lot, but you guys put me to shame. It was one of the most anticipated books of 1988. I have mixed emotions about it, because I generally did not like the trend of more extreme and graphic violence entering into the world of my childhood superheroes. It was brutally jarring at the time. I always gave this one a bit of a pass because it was so well done (was about to say “executed”), especially Brian’s art. I first saw his art on a (now iconic) Green Lantern cover I bought in 1980, and even as a kid, it seemed super special to me. Just so meticulously detailed and realistic, and precisely proportioned. Unlike anyone else. “Camelot 3000” was a game-changer in American comics too. Thanks Brian, for being so generous with the Kayfabe Kings and all of us. I’d love to see you reunite to discuss any of your work, but especially “Camelot 3000” and your DC cover art, starting with that cover for GL 127. By the way, your references to Dick Sprang, culminating with showing us his gift to you was deeply touching to a lifelong fan of the both of you. Best regards!
