@31:07 I think the reason Todd's style is tough to duplicate is because there is no real "logic" to the way he adds detail/noodles. Lee, Silvestri, etc. use anatomy and dynamic lighting to inform their rendering choices, where Todd is not concerned about anatomy, not particularly consistent with his lighting; it's like Jim says: it's just an organic, weird thing about the way Todd sees stuff. No one drew hamburger face Spawn like Todd, either, I think for the same reasons.

I attended a convention in Portland Oregon in the very early days of Image... I don't think Spawn had been released yet. Liefeld, Mcfarlane, Lee, and Valentino were there. I remember that they spent their break time at the action figure booth buying figures that they then took back to the autograph table and used as props to draw from.

1991- the excitement at Marvel Comics generated by Mr Liefeld, Mr McFarlane and Mr Lee was electric! This crossover, moreover the art in it, was much anticipated by me. However, Mr Liefeld had no competition from Mr McFarlane with his rendering of X-Force and vice versa the same for Spider-Man for Mr McFarlane. This was the beginning of the end for the Image founders at Marvel.

*** 12:13: "This is the kind of storytelling I remember -- MacFarlane at the time would say he would draw like, half the issue -- randomly, just draw the pages. Lay 'em out on the floor, rearrange them, and kind of build his story after the pages are already drawn. It feels like this is perfect."*** Brilliant. The epiotme of visual storytelling. Draw a bunch of random illustrations, and then try to piece together a story after the fact. Truly embelmatic of what the comics medium is capable of. *** "One of the other tenants of the McFarland school of artwork is uh...why, why do something in nine panels when we could do it in two?" *** Because sometimes that's what the story requires, depending on the type of story being told by the writer. But most comics pages average about five to six panels. *** 12:41: "And that's what you get a lot of, man. In order to have your money shots, man, you need as few different individual drawings on a page." *** Well, I supposed that depends on what you think is required for a money shot. Again, most comics pages average five to six panels, and this allows one of them to stand out as the "money shot", which is not only what you see in comics (with variation, of course), but is also the advice given by visual storytelling instructors in art schools and professionals who do portfolio review at conventions.

Issue 1 or 2 of Spider-Man had Lizard being impales which was also redrawn because of the code. (Ironically it was printed in Marvel age which also had the code on it.) I don’t know what the hell he expected with the eye thing. He engineered something to complain about.

I enjoyed Todd's writing on the Spider-Man title. I know he gets a lot of guff for bad storytelling, but I think Spider-Man #1 is a far better read than either X-Men #1 or X-Force #1. I never thought much of Spawn, but he was good at giving people what they wanted while he was writing Spider-Man.

I never knew what the hell was the deal with this issue's coloring until a few weeks ago when I saw your previous video. I definitely second Jim's comment, I always thought it looked rad as f--- and would definitely love to see more of this weird stuff in comics. That GW Bridge panel with lots of blues looked like some sort of blue light reflection from a screen, the colors on Cable were the environment reflecting on his chrome armor, I made my own head canon and loved it.

What a strange gimmick. Could never understand why this comic was like this when I was young. Let's say Rob is put on Spider-Man instead of Todd, I wonder what changes to the character he would of brought? In this he's just replicating (as best as Mr. Liefeld can do) McFarlanes design. Would he have made the eyes so big? Maybe to compensate for the little feet he would of definitely gave him.

Sadly I have a negative association with this crossover. In the days following 9/11 I, an unemployed 23 year old, pulled out a bunch of old comics to read because I just couldn’t stomach watching the news anymore. I’m enjoying the escape from the horrors of the day and then BOOM the twin towers are destroyed by the Juggernaut and I throw the comic across the room.

McFarlane was a cop out. Make 9 panels into ,3 it lazy writing. He drew this was because he knew he wasn't a good writer do his art dominated his writing. It's still like that. I lost interest in Todd after spawn 8 I think. I don't care for him as a person or creator. Rob....lol..he's another level I can't even talk about. His writing is probably worse ( major X) lol..🤢🤣. I was more into lee and Williams Claremont bill sienkiewicz abstract art that was happening behind the image guys. Good review guys👍🏻. P.s I thought Todd redrew that juggernaut panel it wasn't someone else. He rushed it that's why it looks weird? I thought he said that.
