This is the kind of old school presentation I miss in wrestling. Bret made it sound like a legit sport and he sounded credible and serious. His despair over losing the title gave the belt credibility.

Right. When I look at old clips with Bret, I don't feel that "wrestling is fake" vibe. You can tell guys back in those days had a lot of respect for the business and kept up kayfabe. And, right, him, other guys and the way the company presented the product made that belt feel prestigious. Any time the belt changed hands, you felt there was a major shift in the company; a changing of the guard. You had that, "okay, the old reign is over, what's going to happen now?"

This might as well be a shoot interview, but it was the angle that Bret was working. This is the kind of conviction and sense of realism that's missing from today's product. For some reason the current generation of wrestlers are all horrible actors that don't understand verisimilitude. They can't convey anything with subtlety and don't know how to work an angle with believable heat. Everything from the promos to the staredowns are hammy, overwrought and forced. 96/97 was the sweet spot for grey area storytelling where you were constantly left wondering how much of what's going on was scripted. Bret, Shawn, Austin and Pillman were all blurring the lines in the most amazing way. We didn't get enough of it.

It’s crazy that people think he’s bad at promos cause he isn’t yelling and screaming as a character like Ric Flair or Hogan. But his promos were always realistic like he’s an genuine professional athlete competing, not some lunatic character

Typical nostalgia filled bullshit comment full of lies. Those WWF days you are talking about was still the WWF New Generation Era that had mostly cartoonish gimmicks like Duke Droese, Isaac Yankem and Hunter Hearst Helmsley on the roster who were reading awkward promos from the script. The start of those things you are talking about started fully the last few months of 1996 and the year 1997 so you were making things up but I am sure there are some kids who believe you and will like your comments. Older fans know you make things up. btw. the only reason why Bret had such believable promos is not because he was good, he is actually pretty awful in front of cameras, it's because he was such a mark for himself, remember his promos when a pirate stole his jacket? LOL "Jean Pierre, you pirates are scum for stealing other people's properties" LOL you really don't know if it's work or shoot. The were maybe 5 wrestles who blurred the lines around that time like tweener Diesel or Goldust but everything else was cartoonish like during the PG Era so you're lying.

Bret's second title reign was technically Owen screwing him. because if you remember Owen was extremely jealous of Bret and didn't want him to be WWF Champion. So he tricked their mother Helen into throwing in the towel by saying Bret was getting hurt by Bob Backlund cause he used the Crossface Chickenwing. Their father Stu saw through Owen's game and tried to stop it but before he could, Helen had already thrown in Bret's towel which caused him to lose the match because of Owen

Hindsight is 20/20, Bret stayed loyal to Vince and the WWF and how was he repayed for his loyalty? He was forced out of the company 1 year later and screwed out of his world title in the process. Bret should have taken the money from WCW when he received the initial offer and told Vince and the WWF to stick it. Has anyone else ever thought that may have been the reason why wcw misused him once he did arrive there? Maybe it was Bischoff’s way of saying “you didn’t sign with me when the first offer was made, you only signed when the other company didn’t want you anymore. That’s fine. We will pay you 3 million dollars a year and do nothing with you”. A stupid way to think? Bret says in the documentary he repeatedly said to Vince “talk me into staying, it’s not about the money, I’ll renegotiate and stay for less” but Vince wouldn’t budge. I wonder how Bret feels now knowing around this period WWF was negotiating to bring back Ultimate Warrior, also JR recently revealed that WWF paid Shawn Michaels $750,000 per year between 1998-2002 to sit at home and do nothing while he was dealing with his back injury.
