There were always monsters at the window. My bedroom at my mum and dad's was in the basement and I always ALWAYS had the curtains shut at night and even then refused to look at the window. One night when I was 13 or 14, my dad came home from work and - not looking to tease at ALL, just to let me know he was home - he KNOCKED ON MY WINDOW. He came in and found me crouched fetal and frantically whimpering in the downstairs hallway where no windows could get me. He felt awful and never did it again.

My mom sat me down and said “here. My mom gave me this vest. It makes you invulnerable to monsters while you’re wearing it. No matter what clothes you have on, you’ll still be wearing the vest until the day you take it off and give it to your kids” and she pretended to unzip an invisible vest and put it on me and rezip it. Still haven’t taken it off. I doubt her mom actually ‘gave’ it to her, but I’m sure as hell gonna pass it on to my kid

Not completely in the same ballpark, but my mum used to have "magic cream" that sparkled, which she'd put on bumps and scrapes - nearly every kid she used it on (including myself) would immediately stop crying and get back to playing. Turns out it was just hand cream with glitter, plus the power of placebo 😅

A week or two ago I saw a video of some guy feeding about 20 or 30 raccoons at night on his deck. Big fat trash pandas swarming over him as he dumps out a bag of catfood, a bucket of grapes, and then sits down among them to hand out cold hot dogs. There is an unexplored downside to leaving cookies out for the monsters.

I was also terrified that there was something outside my window as a child, but instead of telling my mom I said nothing and still can't stand to have the window or blinds open when it's dark out or sleep facing a window. I don't think I have OCD, but I definitely have Catholic guilt and an anxiety disorder and my brain would have definitely taken hold of the cookie thing in a different way than Brennan's, especially since I slept in the same room as my younger sister and would surely blame myself if the monsters got her
