Nobody remembers this team, as a matter of fact no one remembers any of the women's national teams to win medals in the Olympics, but they sure as hell remember all of the men's teams that have won medals. Up until 1992 the US Olympic committee never allowed professional athletes to compete in the Olympics. They were all college players or amature athletes. For those of you who don't know an amature athlete is someone who never got paid to play professional sports. Christian Laettner was not anywhere near the level of his NBA teammates when he was selected for the 1992 Olympic team. Caitlin is much closer in caliber if not equal to the level of the pro women who will be joining. I agree with the comment that you have women in their late thirties and early forties who have had their turn and are just around for nostalgia. Cailtin has more than the talent to be chosen but there are a million marketing reasons why she will be chosen. I expect she will start the season strong but it will be interesting if other teams go overboard in trying to keep her performance down. Lastly, she could easily be the leader in assists as season end, and with the Olympic team. She is not one dimensional.

I think some people have the concept of participation in the Olympics twisted. It's not about the feelings of individual players. It's about a team that can best represent the United States of America. It should be the very best players available. If that includes Caitlin Clark, then so be it. I'll admit that I wasn't a really talented basketball player when I was a kid. It would have been pretty ridiculous if I was chosen over a better athlete, just because the coach was trying to be fair. You ask why not let one of the most popular players be on the Olympic team? The question should be why should there be exceptions for her. She has not proven herself in the least. Losing the Finals twice is not an achievement to brag about. Missing a clutch shot in her first WNBA preseason game is nothing to brag about. She chokes under pressure. Her own WNBA coach says that she doesn't like the way she was coached as a collegiate player and has things to unlearn. She lacks stamina and depends to much on a 3 point shot and stands around waiting for people to give her the ball instead of making plays. The reason not to let her on the team is because popularity doesn't win the game and winning is the actual goal.

Selecting a team is about chemistry and fit. She lacks experience ( esp international) compared to the rest, so it comes down to how much they need a strong shooting 2 guard. For international play physical post players, rebounding and strong ball handling are key so let’s not make this all about Clark ok?
