Hi. I'm old school RN. I did home health with pediatrics & adults on ventilators. And I cant get work. She is showing a excellent technique. Patients usually on back and restricts air. This should be done a.m/pm. Pt. Leaning forward hugging a pillow. Also for a small child or aged...use a regular semi- folded bath towel on back. This protects the skin from injury. Do as pictured. I've done this hand massage from back of spine long strokes upward. This will generate some heat..hence the towel. This will aid in lung expansion. The patient can practice coughing. Mte. Be uncomfortable but goal is to keep airways open. Encourage deep breathing. This doesn't hurt. Also I just ordered & received a handheld percussion massager that feels great & can assist in loosening secretions. Also flu is circulation again. Get ahead of this if u are smoker etc. I was very I'll last year after getting the pneumonia 21 vaccine. I had to sleep sitting up in bed with pillows. These actions may assist in lung expansion & air movement. Please seek help & physician if it gets worse. Stay healthy everyone. I had an instructor who took care of his younger brother with whooping cough. Old school.

If you dont have an extra set of hands, lie down on the floor(carpet is fine), get the stiffist pillow you have in your home, roll it like you are rolling carpet, you want it tight so you can have a lil height to it. As you are laying down place the pillow behind the area of pain and roll back and forth on the carpet. It cracks back muscles as well as drain the lungs. I do it every night and it feels amazing. I PROMISE it works, and this is for those who does not have an extra set of hands hanging around like myself 😂

I learned percussive technique for treating kids with cystic fibrosis. When I got my physical therapy license I treated quite a number of elderly patients. I'd like to make a few suggestions. 1. Older patients that have less padding from muscle and have frail build may appreciate your using a towel. 2. Don't be apologetic about providing the percussion, this is a life-saving technique. I would start with soft blows and gradually increase the strength of my blows and ask the patient to guide me as to how much they could tolerate. 3. We had 5 or more positions that we would use with the CF kids, elderly patients might have difficulty with changing positions but, leaning back in the chair for upper lobes (use a towel for sure) would be helpful or coming to them while in bed to percuss in side-lying would also help. 4. IF the patient is also taking nebulizer treatments you may want to do this shortly after that treatment (ask your doctor when to do it in conjunction with the treatment)

I used to get the flu twice a year & suffer from severe phelm & insomnia. I could hardly get the air into my lungs. My liver was very sick. I was pre diabetes. I could barely walk bc my feet hurt so badly. I had arthritis. Im now almost 7 years completely healthy - none of the above symptoms - I did one thing - I opened my heart to compassion for the Innocent that we torture & so I went Vegan - saved my life. No, having a history of blood clots has the potential to not know you have one currently. Since blood clots can move, if percussion occurs it can move the clot & lodge it somewhere dangerous, increasing the risk for an embolism.
