Tie wrap the latch so it cannot be tripped from the outside like that. If you go away for several days, kill the power to the doors and place c-clamps in the door tracks just above one of the rollers, One other things, do not have cheap doors or they can just kick out the panels anyway. Especially if you garage is in the back of the house and neighbors cannot see it.

Why are people afraid of information. Now you know something you didn't before. So, NOW you can protect yourself from it happening to you. When you didn't know about it, you couldn't.

Use zip ties to hold the manual lock in place. Need to open the door manually from within? Get wire cutters to break the zip ties.

As a Garage Door Professional with over 40 years in the business I'd like to make a few points here. First the video is 100% correct, this can be done, however and especially if the door does not have windows it is not quite as easy as this looks. Second, removing the cord as shown does not remove the problem, again as shown. Third, Wire tying the latch so that it cannot be activated is fine, until that moment when everything has gone wrong and someone is trapped under the door and yes, this does happen. There is at least one model of opener on the market that has a flush latch, it eliminated the ability to catch the latch with a wire. Again fine, remove the cord, but remember you are no longer able to release your door quickly in the event of an emergency, that is why it is called and emergency disconnect. There is one model of opener on the market that incorporates an electro-mechanical lock that goes through the track over a roller to positively secure the door. It is however about twice the price of any other unit.

My solution is once they break in make sure you let them get into your home and then double tapping them two to the chest, then one to the head. Remember, "I was afraid for my families life." Don't forget to tremble and shake saying those words. Working up a tear or two may do the job as well. You can always replace property.

Before some of you not so bright responders jump all over this guy, all you have to do is to 1. Shade the window so he cant see to pull the release or 2. put a slip guard so the hook slides right off. OP - thanks for making me aware of the vulnerability. Ignore some of the ignorant AH that think your going to be the cause of their next break in....

Contact your nearest supplier, preferably someone who sells your current brand of drive unit, and have a battery backed installed. (Keep in mind that some of the older drive units are incompatible with battery backups so a whole new drive unit may be required). Then since you have no use for the manual release cord you (or a technician) would need to remove the lever that disengages the door ( hooked 0:18 ) leaving nothing for thieves to disengage. - RJ Garage Doors Australia

Thought that I would respond due to the naivete of some of the comments (been in the business since 1986 and have seen a few things but keep learning, whatever that's worth) Ahhh...a garage door without windows...oh, no! (heavy sigh)...burglar will have to move on to next victim ... or maybe not. Well, here is how its done ... cordless drill with a paddle bit applied center on the door and approximately 12" from the top of the door - make your hole (surprisingly easy to do; if a metal bracket is present, move left or right with your cordless drill by about 2"...insert wire (hangar) straight through and catch dangling release chord. - If no chord, this is "trickier" (not really)...make your hole 2-4" from top of door, insert wire (hangar) straight through and grab the latch - okay, so that wasn't so difficult ("tricky") after all. Note what you trying to prevent ... The closed garage door (after entry) permits concealment of bad guys (from neighbors, residents, police responding to a suspicious person or burglar call), provides time and concealment for preparation of efficient entry/exit of the residence. These burglary skills are practiced and mastered quickly by bad people ... but can be defeated. Use common sense...including (but not limited to) installation of real secure doors and windows, set alarms (the area on the other side of your garage's interior door should be a "trap" - that means no alarm delay if the trap area is breached, thus sounding an audible alarm and simultaneously sending an immediate "panic" signal to your PD requiring a response, etc) ... of course, its also helpful to be observant, not to over feed your dogs and to become well trained in the use of a firearm ... zip tie down those latches, reinforce your windows and doors, prepare for contingencies...good luck, be safe. Excellent video.

I just keep balloons filled with VX gas and a motion detector connected to a detonator, which is disabled only garage door code entry. I don't like windows either because if there are windows on the garage door, the thief can see the VX and will pick another garage, thus, all my fun is ruined. :(

Ian MacFarlane actually i watched i video of the same technique with a door with no windows and it took under a minute. He just starts at the center of the door where the track obviously is, then felt for the cord with his wire hanger and just followed it up to the release. Best fix, re-usable heavy duty zip tie from the release pulling the handle up to the track bracket, then it cant pull down, unless the owner undoes the zip tie from inside the garage if needed. I've only used my release handle once in 5 years during a power outage, so to remove the release cord and zip tie it closed is worth the hassle to remove it, if it pisses a criminal off enough to make him give up and try someone else's garage instead!

By the way, the intellectual critic might be trying harder to discourage people from BECOMING burglars (hint, hint) and not spending so much effort trying to discourage people from protecting their homes from them. My comments are made here in the hope that people won't decide this is a harmless stunt with no consequence. If you want to rage about people getting shot, rage on them for being burglars.

Are you kidding? This is useful for those of us who can then think how to block it - either using zip ties or blocking the area near the hook. Security is a two way street, but if you keep things secret the bad guys will work 100% of the day long to figure it out, the good guys have JOBS to do and don't have the same resources. Keep it secret and the bad guys will just tell each other. Tell all and let the good guys in on the secret and the good guys can figure out a way to block it.

I'm sorry, but I really can't tell if you all are just joking or simply dumb. This video shows that garage with window is dangerous, now what is your option? 1. Do something about your garage's window. 2. Post stupid comments below, do nothing about your garage's window, and let thieves who already know how to do this break into your house. 3. Good luck being ignorant and not learn anything new ever. 4. Oh, and you can use this to get into your own garage in case you lock yourself out and have no other options unless you prefer freezing to death, etc. Your choice.

You make a lot of assumptions. 1. My garage does not have any windows. 2. Ditto 3. I don't even know what you mean. 4. My garage has a separate entry door with a deadbolt lock for which I always carry a key. So I can always get in. However, you seem to assume all garages are attached to houses. My garage is detached and not heated, so what good is it for me to break in? I may still freeze.
