I’m thinking influence more than anything. Surely, there had been in depth hours-long interview in which the open-ended question was asked of Hayes: Who would you build this team around? What would you differently? What players in our pool will bring us into the future with success? Kilgore is just a paperweight. The federation, who did the interview, will control player call-ups even more so than they did with Vlatko until Hayes lands.

I hope the USA understands that this is not a manager you decide to fire after 2 years. The silent misgiving among the Chelsea base is that the US will end up messing her about with the fickle nature of the American fan base. We wish her well across the pond, just not when USA v ENG play. Emma broke the Chelsea FC manager role. No other manager will ever measure up to the human being she is. She loves the US. Such a difference in how UK commentators are talking about root and branch reform of US game to include more skill and tactics, with the next generation of players needed on a four year cycle, to give Emma a new start as a new broom. No mention of Olympics, as they wrote off this team as yesterday's women. All athleticism and no football awareness would sum up the assessment given over here of the current squad in comparison to Spain, seen as the new standard.

This is great news! Best of luck to Emma and the USWNT. However, she needs to say this to the team: The playing field is now level. It doesn't matter what you've done in the past or what your name is. It doesn't matter if your name is Alex, or Becky, or Sophia, or Trinity, or Crystal, or Mallory, or Lynn or Tobin, or Lindsay, or whoever. Everyone is at the same level. You have to earn your minutes on the pitch. The manager is giving you NOTHING. You have to earn it. If you don't perform/produce on the pitch, you don't make the team, you don't make the 18 and you certainly don't make the starting 11. Competition occurs every day, every practice, every game. All the time. Those who produce, will get playing time. And vice-versa......

@davidt. Does the US not get that your game is behind the rest of the world now and Emma has been hired to sweep clean and start you from scratch, with a new generation of players who are not just athletes. Chelsea women were the nearest to Barcelona in UCL last year. Barcelona are better than Spain, who won the World Cup. Go look at the current Chelsea and Barcelona squads. Ask yourself how many US players would get in their second eleven. I reckon the US players are in for a shock, as she will no doubt ask them something like that, to see how honest they are with themselves.

@@alansmithee8831No, it's not behind, regardless of your delusions. What's happened is the rest of the world has caught up. The US got out of the group stage and would have done better other than it chose a really poor coach. That's the issue, the coach. Which you still don't seem to get. There were candidates with international experience (and, no child, that doesn't mean a club team overseas). If she's as good as we hope, given the US player pool, the team should be back to the quarters at least at the next WC. Complexity seems beyond you, but give it a try.

@kelcal. As I just replied to Ralph Smith, I commented after World Cup that no decent coach would take on US for the Olympics. The way they play is now behind countries like Spain, where tactics and skill are much more important than athleticism alone. Take a look at the Barcelona and Chelsea squads from the UCL. US players would be lucky to get in Barcelona's second eleven. Emma will have insisted on being a new broom. Tv commentators here in UK never mentioned the Olympics for Emma, just the four year cycle to the World Cup, that dwarfs the Olympics for countries where football is the number one sport.

@Ralph_Smith. I suggested in comments after the World Cup that the US would not get a decent coach until after the Olympics, since the way US plays is now behind other countries like Spain for skill and tactical awareness. Emma has, I reckon, been brought in as a new broom. Commentators here in UK were talking of a four year cycle for them. No mention of the Olympics. Mind you, the World Cup and the European Championship are seen as the important competitions. The Olympics is for Team GB, a bit complicated with four UK countries with their own FAs.

If you cannot get the ball off a team like Spain, they will just make you run around like lost sheep. If the teams that are catching up copy how Spain play, they will go straight past too. The top teams in the Premier League copied the Spanish and won in Europe. I reckon it is no coincidence that there are 1 million British in Spain and that our football cultures have merged as people go back and forth and accept new ways. I reckon Emma is the sort of down to earth, hard working, working class British woman, not unlike your typical NFL fan. She would want to get football to that sort of US supporter. The type I met and loved when I toured US. She will look for skill and talent from that background, as she will know they are the same sort of no nonsense, want to win folk she grew up with.

Unfortunately things are not going to turn around as quickly as everybody wishes. They intend to rebuild the whole women's soccer program and that will take time and a good measure of patience. Their midfield players are average to mediocre and don't compare to the players on the top international teams like Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands. Until Ms. Hayes solves the midfield problems, the US will not be serious contenders at the next WC. And the fans can forget about next summer's Olympics. Ms. Hayes will not be joining the team until her Chelsea season is over which is three months before the Olympics in France.
