Breaking Down The Disney & Sony Physical Media Deal

Ойын-сауық

The big breaking news out of the physical media world this week was a new partnership deal between Disney and Sony! As you may have heard, Disney is partnering with Sony to give Sony ownership of the manufacturing, distribution, merchandising, and retail marketing of their physical media business.
What does this mean for collectors? Will we see more Disney/Fox/Touchstone titles on physical media? Will Australia get their Disney Blu-rays back? Let me break it all down for you in this video!

As I live in Australia I would love it if Disney would once again distribute physical media to Australia like they once did, as it's expensive to buy Disney movies & TV shows from overseas with shipping fees and the currency conversion high rates, it is not fair that they just cut off Australia from distributing any of their catalogue on any physical media format.

I Completely agree!!!! Im so pissed off with what they did! I have every Marvel title on 4K UHD disc and when I found out Disney stopped distributing Marvel movies to Australia I was devastated! Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3 was the last title i bought at JB HIFI and now im forced to buy movies from overseas which is very expensive! Plus because they are a different region I had to modify my 4K player to be able to play different regions! I hope this changes!

@@trancepower1205 Yes definitely, a completely disgusting move on Disney's part just to cut off Australia completely, It's frustrating for me as I have been a physically media collector for over 30 years, since I was 12 in 1993. Here in Australia we are also lacking in boutique labels too such as Arrow, Kino Lorber, Shout Factory and many more and don't get as many Blu-ray/4K UHD releases as the U.S. gets and because of Disney completely cutting us off from any physical media releases we are hardly getting movies that the U.S., U K. and the rest of the world are getting.

  • @mrb0775

    @mrb0775

    3 ай бұрын

Yes Gravity sure needs a 4K HDR encoded Blu-ray edition, especially for its fans who use OLED TVs. Since the dark void of space in Gravity when just presented by regular Blu-ray on a good OLED, has a deeper black than what the $200,000 digital 4K projectors used in the best movie theaters are able to display! I just love the fact that a good OLED, like a 77" or 83" Sony panel, can provide better picture quality than is available in 2024's best commercial movie theaters! And that's why when seeing Oppenheimer, the week it came out, back in July, though we greatly enjoyed it, I was disappointed that scenes which were supposed to be VERY dark, SURE weren't as dark as OLEDs now present them, even though we saw the film at one of Cinemark's state of the art theaters! So I'm very grateful that 2024's movie fans, like me, have these great movie viewing formats, of 4K Blu-ray, & even regular Blu-ray, enabling us to see movies in very high PQ, while we have all the comforts of home, but NOT having to endure noisy moviegoers (or their kids), or having to pay rip-off theater prices to get refreshments. Yup, it seems plain to me that we're in the Golden Age of Movie Appreciation At Home!

In my opinion, almost everything I've seen from Sony has been great, from the old to the new I don't think I've seen a single bad 4k transfer, I think Sony will do these films the proper justice that they deserve, hell I think they could do some re-releases of Marvel films with Dolby Vision and a proper Atmos remix the way the creators intended

Yeah Jeff you're right about films being a collaboration between studios sometimes. It's funny to see the hands that some films have passed through. Vinegar's latest Ultra release Southern Comfort is from the Paramount catalog, but it was originally distributed by Fox so you see the Fox logo at the beginning but there's no music. I think there used to be some rule about which films they'd play no music, the short version and the long version. I think this is the first VS film to have a Fox logo. If they ever have a Disney film, that'll be the day. 😂

Another cost cutting and cash grab move. Disney has been bloated in every department. This will immediately bring profits and cut costs. Sony has it down pat. By the end of the year, if it goes well, Sony will get to distribute the films they want too. A very good move for physical media collectors, period.

First off this is really exciting news. But it does open the door for a two-part question for you. First, if I want the DVD titles of the sword in the rose, escapade in Florence, Rob, Roy the Highland rogue, the fighting prince of Donnegal, 20,000 leagues under the sea Blu-ray, treasure Island Blu-ray, Davy Crockett blu ray, and the black cauldron Blu-ray; would it be a safe bet to think that those will continue to be released under the new Sony deal? Part two if not, is there a way to buy in bulk(10 titles at a time)from Disney movie club before it closes? Thanks so much.

It would be helpful for the audience if you make a video explaining from the business standpoint of view how the production and distribution companies are organized under different umbrellas, including primary and independent companies. The same will be valid for OTT companies.

The best hint I've seen is that outsourcing production & distribution to Sony removes layers of bureaucracy at Disney in greenlighting physical media releases, which should make it easier to roll out releases like the Fox catalog. Never expected Sony to just raid the Disney catalog; even Sony still has some Best Picture winners (my top collecting niche) waiting for 4K discs. Still should make it easier to roll out Fox catalog titles on 4K, especially The Sound of Music & Patton (both Best Pictures shot on 65mm negatives reportedly with 4K transfers ready; large format films tend to make the best 4K transfers, as Sony knows with Lawrence of Arabia).

I know Sony doesn't have a say in what parts of Disney's catalogue they get to distribute, but I'm still holding out hope that Sony's choice to distribute old stuff from Columbia/Tri-Star catalogue means Disney will eventually give them access to the Disney catalogue. With that in mind, the two movies I'm most passionately hoping to see on Blu-ray in the coming months/years are _The Brave Little Toaster_ (from Hyperion Pictures) and _Powder_ (from Buena Vista Pictures). I know the director of _Powder_ is extremely controversial, but strictly as a film, I thought _Powder_ was quite good when I was kid.

I wonder what will happen with their Japanese division. I know Walt Disney Japan has their theatrical and home video sections as one company, as that’s how things work in Japan. And Disney handles the home video distribution of Studio Ghibli’s films there, with Panasonic doing the authoring and encoding instead of Disney themselves. I hope that Panasonic still handles the authoring for Ghibli’s films even with Sony handling distribution. During the LaserDisc/VHS/DVD days, Sony encoded and mastered the Studio Ghibli films, and Panasonic took over starting with Ponyo, the first feature film they released on Blu-ray.

Limiting the availability of movies to any particular market is a really fantastic way to encourage illegal downloading and streaming off the internet. So they're creating their own loss long term if they choose to cut certain countries out or make them wait longer than everyone else. Having said that, this is why i bought a region free bluray player, so i can actually buy anything i want and at the best possible price, from overseas.

I think mostly everyone is optimistic about this because Disney may be encouraged to release more movies than before. It was becoming more known to the public about there recent finincial troubles in the passed 6 years, so cutting budgets from somewhere had to show up soon. Now that Sony is helping with the physical media heavy lifting, there is a good chance Disney will be generous enough to make deals with otherstudios like Scream Factory or Arrow Video, Come on Barbarian.

With Sony putting those forced pop-up menus onscreen at the end credits of their movies (which hasn't been called out by people like this), they've become the only major label I avoid and were the LAST one I would've wanted to pick up any other studio. At this point Sony should just shut down and license their titles to another company, as they've already been doing with older titles. In the laserdisc days it was basically just Pioneer and Image Entertainment doing the distribution work for that format and keeping it alive when other companies wouldn't. If Image were still around I'd be happy with them just taking up work for all physical media going forward as it becomes more of a niche market, but they're already gone.

@@robertjacques4117 Yeah it’s great. I was a Disney+ member for a while but eventually cancelled it because I realized there’s nothing on there I’m interested in. Completely randomly I did find Togo though and loved it. At some point down the road, I got the urge to watch it again so I signed up for Disney+ again just to watch that movie and then immediately cancelled. That’s another reason why I will forever love physical media.
