A lot of younger movie fans have seen slip covers from their first Disney dvds and blurays and just treated it like extra packaging to trash. So those are the types of people asking these questions and why slip covers matter. A video like this informed me of one thing I hadn't known. The first pressing mark on the Lionsgate steelbooks. I don't collect them in particular, so I had no idea.

Ya know, Jeff? I want to thank you. You’re one of the only content creators who focuses majority on physical media who goes out of your way to emphasize and stress that “Hey, I prefer the 4K, but if all you got is Bluray or even dvd? Who cares, collect, if it works for you it works for you!” I’ve seen some content creators who make you feel bad if you have one pixel less than the highest quality 8K, 10K whatever😂 (I’m not counting people like Daisuke Beppu or 20th and 21st movies, who I feel focus more on THE FILM and the tech specs are more an after thought for them). So for that, my friend, I thank you 🥳

I do really like to have the slipcover, if it has unique features such as shinyness, sparklyness, embossing, different artwork from the inner case, etc. I just wish that they wouldn't make it soooo much more difficult to get a slipcover if you don't buy the movie RIGHT away at release... Slipcovers used to be on DVDs and Blu Rays, but they’re mostly redundant since it’s kind of wasteful since it’s excessive packaging! I just care about the hard casing for the disc, since a lot of movie disc cases are made from recyclable plastic that don’t age well and they get easily damaged!

Australia cheaps out on packaging big time. In the past few years almost all major boxsets have been multiple cases in a cheap cardboard sleeve. My son used to work at Target a decade or 2 ago and the DVDs with the slipcovers wouldn't fit in their theft protection plastic cases, so they would take them off and throw them away. There was also a local video store that would order say 10 copies of the new releases and would then pull off and throw out the slipcovers. Hard to believe these days. One thing you didn't cover that I feel deserves a mention is the special slipcovers that Walmart gets on catalog titles for special endcap promotions. They had the Deadpool covers on a selection of Fox films like Logan and War for the Planet of the Apes. They've also recently had the minimalist red and white and black Valentine horror films like My Bloody Valentine. Currently they have some "Wanted Poster" art on western films for Father's Day like Hateful Eight and Django. Some of these are really nice looking.

Jeff, I knew one day you would eventually get to slipcovers, and you did not disappoint. Excellent Video. Do you think it's possible that one day, you'll do a follow-up video and talk about custom slipcovers? If I'm not mistaken, I believe there are people out there who make custom slipcovers for Blu-rays and 4K discs. Custom slipcovers can be a really good alternative for those who missed out on the first run / limited edition slipcovers. Also, for my fellow collectors, something to be cautious of when buying from Ebay? There are Ebay sellers out there who'll post stock photos of a blu-ray or 4K with the slipcover but when you get the product, it's only the case and disc, but no slipcover. As Jeff stated, definitely look for photos that were actually taken, (not stock photos) when purchasing a disc with a slipcover. And if you're not sure, send a message to the seller asking him or her if the disc in question does come with a slipcover. Hopefully you'll get a response fairly quickly. I'm just putting that info out because I was burned once when I thought I was purchasing a movie (from Ebay) with the slipcover (based on a stock photo) only to get it delivered without one.

When they were just starting to disappear I even went to sites for custom made slips (never bought any or made any myself, but the idea was there), but when I realized it was a permanent change across all releases I couldn't be bothered. I switched to Steelbook instead, which has turned the other way around and become a too over saturated market for something meant to be a somewhat nicer and more limited packeting, but I still buy most of my movies in steels if they get one, though I've since many years stopped buying just any steel that got released, just focusing on those movies I really want.

It’s weird that 4K discs came with slipcovers in Sweden when the format launched and now not a single release will have it. Such a shame. I pretty much only buy US releases because of that.

I can understand why some folks may want to collect slip covers and steel books. Myself, I'm only really interested in the movie and the bonus features. I like to have my favorite movies in the best quality possible with as much behind the scenes information as possible. I don't really care how it's packaged.

I had no idea about the whole "first print run" aspect of them, that's pretty interesting. I like them, they look nice, so I would not choose to discard them, but it wouldn't influence my decision to buy something. If a copy of something comes with a slip, that's fine. If not, that's also fine.

I love when blu rays have slipcovers, especially if the artwork is lenticular or embossed. The spines also make those titles stand out more when they're on the shelf with all of the other titles I own.

I used to throw out the slipcovers (or also called O-cards) or old Blu-Rays because I didn't know that they were needed. Back then, late 2000's, early 2010's, a lot of the studios would put a different artwork on the case itself, so my Iron Man and Star Trek 09 Blu-Rays are different. Now of course, I save them all in case I want to sell it.

In Norway prices were always dumped on steel books and slip cases for 4K and Blu-Ray, DVD etc, because they never sell out. It's the opposite of Ebay prices here. They are dumped instead of being sold at "collector's prices".

The slipcover obsession is real in most cases. I was hoping you would mention Solo and what happened with that release, 2 different slip covers one being more limited than the other and that was the only Star Wars movie to have that problem. The rest were easy to get. Solo slip remains high on the aftermarket sites 100 + typically.

I'm a sucker for packaging, slip covers, steelbooks, the lot. I love it when a disc is packed with goodies and artwork. The more the merrier. Hell, I'd buy a disc that had a slipcover over a slipcover over a slipcover. Plain plastic doesn't showcase my collection like an over-cooked snazzy package does.

So I've saved all of the slip covers since then but I don't leave them on the case, I just gently fold them up and tuck them away.

Another factor is whether the release is part of an ongoing series, because there are a lot of collectors who aren't too bothered about slipcovers in and of themselves but do want their spines to match on the shelf. For example, a few years ago Dinsey reprinted all their animated "Classics" with numbered slips and, consequently, one of the Winnie the Pooh movies started going for silly amounts of money on Ebay because it happened to have a smaller print run than the others. Now, new titles get a slip with the regular poster artwork on release and one of the matching numbered ones follows a few months later.

You briefly mentioned steelbooks. Would love to see a video comparing the difference between releases (if any), why the steelbook usually costs more money, is it worth upgrading to a steelbook variant (maybe you could do recommendations, like how you recommend whether or not to upgrade your bluray to 4k), do steelbooks deteriorate faster than plastic covers, are steelbook dvds collectable, do they even have steelbook 4k movies, etc.

In my opinion, slipcovers are essentially an overly-praised piece of cardboard. It’s actually wild to think about. I would much rather have just the amaray with a disc and booklet inside (if it provides that in the first place) talking about the film. This kinda stuff has always been funny to me because I see people that go nuts over slipcovers meanwhile some people can’t care any less about a slipcover. People are usually really on board with them or are just very apathetic towards them lol, me fitting in with the latter group mentioned. It really is just a ‘to each their own’ thing but people should make sure to appreciate the films as well! That’s why we are all in this hobby in the first place, the love of film. People should remember that.

Good explanation. I bought the south park blu-ray collections. and half came with a cover and half came with out. And I use to throw them out because I thought they were just part of standard packaging. Now I save them. P.S. I bought "The Town" at Best Buy years ago and it came in like a hard cover book. I have not seen anything else like it. It is pretty cool.

Had no idea about Lionsgate doing those First Pressing identifiers on steelbooks, thats really cool. Personally, I've never given a rip about slipcovers. I keep them when I get new movies now but I've probably recycled hundreds of them over the years. One thing that I don't like about them is that they make cases take up slightly more room on the shelf. If they always had alternate artwork, I'd definitely have been more keen on getting them.

When I first started collecting DVDs and Blu-rays, I didn't care about them and threw them away. When UHD came out and most movies started getting them, I started to care and desired them. Now, I'm kind of in the middle. If it's a movie I absolutely love, I want the slip because it feels like it completes it. If it's just a movie I like, I'm happy if I get one but wont throw a fit if it doesn't come with one. Kino Lorber is a big one though. I hate the font they use on their spines and you need the slip to get the original movie font on the movie. That drives me nuts because their slips are first run only.
