Breakaway - Piccadilly Players, 1929

Музыка

This is Breakaway by The Piccadilly Players, recorded in 1929. This is, in my opinion, the best version of Breakaway that exists(at least in some quantity). This record is owned by Jeff Wood, a fellow collector, who graciously allowed me to put this on KZread, since it hadn't been uploaded before.

    Great version! A rare label here, only available for a few months in the fall of 1929, right? It's a shame this talkie is lost. The sequel 1930 Fox Movietone Follies exists luckily! A print was shown at a New York film festival about twenty years ago.

    Yes, that's correct. It really is a shame that this label(and by extension the Edison record company) and the 1929 Follies were lost to the depression. Luckily we still have the songs!

    Were these vertically cut like the acoustic Diamond Discs?

  • @yestertreasures

    @yestertreasures

    No, these were made after the Edison company's switchover to standard lateral-cut discs. It's recorded the same way as any other 78 at the time!

    @@yestertreasures Thanks for the reply. I was curious because vertically cut ETs, such as World and Associated, were recorded twice with a cutting-head phase reversal the second time. This was done to eliminate distortion inherent in the process. My understanding is that in later years this was accomplished electrically. (The second recording was also needed to select the performances and put them in proper order for the final product).

    I wouldn't blame you for thinking that it is! This disc is actually in very nice shape, but Edison Lateral records have an unfortunately common pressing problem, which means the imperfections are pressed into the disc. The George Olsen version is also very good, I have a copy myself!

    Edison's heart was never into the electrical process. He was getting into his eighties and his sons seemed disinterested.

    Those artifacts are unfortunately pressed into the disc. Edison lateral records seem to have been sometimes pressed without much care, and thus sound damaged even when in very good shape. Unfortunately, I don't believe those artifacts could be fixed except with very advanced restoration software. Not every Edison Lateral is like this, but it's an annoyingly uncommon problem.

    Edison went reluctantly into the electrical process. By 1927, his accustical recordings, in good shape, played with a good needle were excellent. In 1928, both Victor and Edison made a very special phonograph, hand wound with an exceptional sound. They made their records sound great. They were large and expensive and only made a couple of years.

    @@yestertreasures I recall a Diamond Disc version of a piece had a slightly-noticeable artifact that was glaring in the Needle Type version. Sad that Edison quality control slipped so much, but in hindsight, it's a miracle these discs even existed...!

    The artifacts you hear are caused by the record itself, not by the stylus used. Edison Lateral records have an annoyingly common pressing problem, which means the artifacts you hear are pressed into the disc itself.

    @@yestertreasures I didn't know about that problem.I must have been lucky. I had a copy of this Edison which played fine, and a few other Edisons which were okay, although very "choosy" about which stylus they preferred :-)
