PROJECT TITLE: Alcohol Ink Tile Coasters
----------------------------------
DESIGNED BY: Kendall Mills
----------------------------------
SKILL LEVEL (1-5): 3
----------------------------------
TIME TO COMPLETE: 10-15 min per tile
---------------------------------
AGE RANGE (3-5) / (6-8) / (9-12) / (unspecified): 12+
---------------------------------
MESSY LEVEL (1-5): 5
---------------------------------
PROJECT TIP: WEAR GLOVES, your hands will thank you. Also, have a designated set of brushes for alcohol ink & clean with isopropyl alcohol quickly after use to prevent ruining your brush.
-------------------------------

-------------------------------
INSTRUCTIONS:
Step 1. Prepare your surface area, Inks will stain, so make sure you’re working on something you don’t mind getting messy.
Step 2: Take your clean tile, pour a little blending solution onto the tile. Then add your first color.
Step 3: Working quickly, use a straw or hairdryer to blow ink around the tile surface, creating patterns as the ink dries. You can continue to lighten the inks by adding more blending solution as you blow air to move the inks.
Step 4: Repeat step 3 with your next colors. Pro Tip: remember your color wheel and use complementary colors to achieve the best blends.
Step 5: Keep going until you’re happy with the patterns. There is no wrong way to play with alcohol inks!
Step 6: Set somewhere out of reach of your cat who hates your artwork and wants to mess everything up, let dry for 24-48 hrs.
Step 7: Seal with protective spray once completely dry. "Kamar Varnish" is a good spray to seal alcohol ink, and "Duplicolor Clearcoat Acrylic Enamel" has been recommended for coasters in particular. (acrylicpouring.com/best-heat-...)
Step 8: Enjoy all the compliments your friends will give you on your rad new coasters.

The alcohol inks are good, I have some. It's something like 3.50 or 4 dollars for a small bottle though. You can definitely dilute it with some 91% rubbing alcohol which is great but it would be cool if I could get a nice big economic bottle

If you’re still wondering, let your piece fully cure (24 hours) then you apply Kamar varnish (it’s a fixative, so the ink doesn’t move) in a few light coats, letting each coat dry (it dries fast), then spray with a UV-resistant clear coat (alcohol inks fade over time, Krylon makes a good one). Then you have some choices - if you’re going to put hot drinks on them, use a clear acrylic enamel spray or a clear heat resistant spray sealer (Rust-Oleum makes a hi-heat automotive engine enamel that works well). If temperature isn’t an issue, I use Krylon triple thick glaze. If you want your piece to be dishwasher safe, use Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe (it takes a whopping 28 days to fully cure though). As far as the back of the tile goes, I use cork or felt. There’s plenty of other options, this is just what I do. I hope this helps 😊

Questions: do these inks come in a set instead of a single item for $11? And if not can I use another type of alcohol ink brand? Amazon has a ton. What size are the tiles that you’re using and where do you get them from? Lastly after they dry and you seal them I know with my alcohol inks when I use my bottles I use acrylic clear so would that work as well or do they have to be sealed with some type of acrylic? Ty so much beautiful work♥️♥️

  • @SavageCharms

In case you’re still wondering, inks definitely come in sets. Personally, I think $11 is really too high. I use several different brands - use what works best for you! I get my tiles from Lowe’s. 18 cents per tile for 4”x4” tiles! Whatever you do to them after the ink - use Krylon Kamar Varnish first! It’s a great fixative!

We recommend using Krylon Kamar Varnish and Krylon UV-Resistant Clear to seal your alcohol ink art. You could also use dishwasher-safe Mod Podge or a coat of resin. If you use resin, you can buff the resin with sandpaper for a non-slippery matte effect.
