@@TextWriter There are open vowels in European Portuguese, as well as closed vowels! In Brazilian Portuguese in almost all dialects the vowels are always open!

@@TextWriter Don't talk about what you don't understand! I know that you're an official Portuguese-Pt hater but it isn't true that "es" is pronounced "sh"! For instance, "estrada" (road)v in Brazilian-Portuguese they say "esstrádá" or "êshtrádá" (Rio de Janeiro accent) or "istrádá" (Salvador da Bahia). In Portugal we say "extráda" (Viseu accent), "eshtráda" (Lisbon), "eshtrádã" (Algarve and Alentejano). There are a lot of dialects but in none of them people say "shtráda"! Probably you've heard some unclassy guy talking like Cristiano Ronaldo and you assume that it's the way people talk!

I am a passionate polyglot, a professional translator and have some very personal relations to Brazil. Besides, I feel (and my Brazilian friends agree with me) that Brazilian Portuguese is just more beautiful. I have noticed that non-Lusophone teachers and universities have started to regard Brazilian Portuguese as the default Portuguese, unlike with English where British English still keeps much of its status as the default variety, in spite of all the global character of American influence. The default textbook for Portuguese some university libraries will give you if you ask them is a Brazilian Portuguese textbook.

Oh yes! Living in Portugal with both Brazilian and Portuguese friends, I hear this difference all the time!

Yeah, Portuguese from Portugal is harder, but learning it makes you understand so many other languages. Also, the way you reduce, "excelente" down to just "shlent" in Portugal is just awesome! I say that to my parents, and they really like it.

@@timothybruggeman9332 Boa! Muito bem! Contudo não precisas usar "eu" sempre que te referes a ti porque a conjugação verbal indica que és tu, ou sobre ti, que falas, e não outra coisa qualquer. Embora seja correcto dizeres "EU ainda estou aprendendo", ou "EU estou a aprender", podes simplesmente dizer "estou a aprender", ou "estou aprendendo" ( gerúndio). Assim podes, por ex, escrever ou dizer "Sou dos Estados Unidos. Estou aprendendo ( a aprender) português brasileiro porque morei no Brasil dois anos, entre 2021 e 2022, e quando lá estive a morar ( a viver), decidi aprender o idioma ( a língua). Agora voltei/ regressei aos EUA mas quero ser/ tornar-me fluente. Sei que o português não é muito comum onde moro/ vivo, mas não me importo. Sou teimoso. Além disso gostaria de viajar até Portugal um dia, de férias" Compreendes a diferença? Não é preciso usares sempre o pronome pessoal- embora não seja erro- porque simplesmente a conjugação verbal indica sobre quem falas. Podes construir frases inteiras sem nunca precisares de dizer e repetir "eu", ou "tu", por ex. My parents were both born and raised in Portugal for many years before coming to USA and I have been slowly learning european portuguese... but I have more fascination over brazilian portuguese...

I think it's a matter of what you're used to. I learned only European Portuguese and when I heard some Brazilians speaking I had difficulty understanding them without subtitles at first. I also think that speakers of Spanish would have an easier time with Brazilian Portuguese. In the end, if you're passionate about learning, it doesn't seem as difficult anymore.

It was actually the opposite for me as a Spanish speaker. European Portuguese initially was so much easier for me to understand.

This was a cool video! I have been learning Brazilian Portuguese for 3 years. I LOVE Brazil and Brazilian Portuguese. I went to Brazil on a mission trip last summer and am planning to possibly go on a mission trip to Portugal next summer. So, the switch from Brazilian Portuguese to Portugal Portuguese will be interesting. 😁

Lets see I was first exposed to the Brazilian accent through my practice of capoeira but I found the European accent more relaxed and less work for my mouth muscles 😹

Excellent video! I am an Italian-Brazilian-American heading to Portugal for a couple of week and I am hoping to better my Continental Portuguese when I get there. Com certeza existe diferença entre o portugês do Brasil e o de portugal mas com um pouco de paciência nos entendemos. Assim como há diferenças entre o inglês da Iglaterra e dos Estados Unidos. Tento aprender os dois. Acho que qualquer um aprendendo português deveria aprender as duas variantes.

My first Portuguese teacher taught both simultaneously, so none of us ever had any issue understanding the other regardless of the dialect we chose. When you're use to it, your brain adjusts for the difference in pronunciation automatically. The same way I can understand British english as a Canadian very easily. I will say, the difference seems to be larger than North American and British English because Brazil and Portugal have somewhat different grammar, especially in informal spoken Brazilian. A friend told me in Brazil her friends would just use the third person singular for almost everything informally such as "voces fala" which normally would be incorrect.

True, we usually said it like that, even though it's considered wrong, but it's only accepted in the spoken form, not written. Now, some people say it is because of the influence of African languages, some say it's because of the Italian (plural in Italian doesn't have a S, I believe), some say it is because of the lack of a better educational system. Fact is that Brasil and Portugal were influenced by different things and countries, and evolved differently after some point.

You are completely correct. Differences in grammar are very noticeable. There is a lot. And "vocês fala" is incorrect as well as "tu vai".

The differences between Br-Pt and Pt-Pt would be more accurately compared to those existing between European French and Canadian French IMO.

Eles é que falam mal, pois dizem "as minha melhor amiga", não dizem o r nos verbos, não se percebe se é estar ou está, e o I no final das palavras confunde muito, por exemplo, não se entende se é dormi, dorme ou dormir, eles dizem sempre dormi.

Well , for me and not only : Brazilian Portuguese is easier due to its pronunciation and open vowels . The European variety of the Portuguese language is harder indeed ; due to the closed vowels pronunciation . Both variants are interesting but the Brazilian version is easier and more popular so for one to encounter even hearing Portuguese is most likely to be the one from Brazil 😊 Also job opportunities wise : is more popular the Brazilian version of the language. Nevertheless both are interesting and should be studied ❤

I've found that my family from São Miguel and São Jorge, Açores, uses "a gente" more often than "nós" as well. But the rest would be European Portuguese (eu, tu, etc).

"A gente vai" is also Portuguese! Not specific to Brazil.

Depends on where you want to travel or move to. This presenter is British and as such will probably be spending more time in Portugal than Brazil. However, someone like me who hails from North America (Canada in my case) and living in Central America, will probably spend more time in Brazil than Portugal and, as such, should learn the Brazilian version instead. And, the other advantage over learning Brazilian Portuguese is that there are a lot more of them so you will be able to converse more with the general Portuguese-speaking population.

Finding these videos super useful and have subscribed. I’m looking to move to Lisboa hopefully this year (God willing) so these are life savers. What I find really interesting is that it’s becoming clear to me that the app Drops sometimes teaches more Brazilian Portuguese (even though I selected European!). Little things like using “Voce” and how they pronounce “Sou”. My friend also told me it’s not often you hear “grao de bico”. Rather it’s “grao”…. Anyway great video and channel 👍🏾

I am struggling to switch my Brazilian portuguese to European. Needs a lot more practice. When I lived in the USA, I never changed my Australian English accent at all. It wouldn’t budge. Just adopted some different words and expressions to be better understood.

I did some doulingo before my short trip to Lisbon. Of course it was Brazilian. I wasn't planning on really speaking. Was just for fun. But I felt a bit...lost or disappointed when I said (or rather thought) so much incorrectly.

In my opinion I believe it doesn't matter which one to learn as long as they are the same language, its just an accent at the end. However, I believe that learning Brazilian Portughese is much easier to pronunce and Portughese people will undersand me when I speak Brazilian, I believe that its like when you are learning English its more common and easier to learn the American accent not the british.

Brazilian tip - when speaking Portuguese(BR) try extending the words more, almost as if singing them, gives a lighter feeling. If you speak in a more "compressed" manner it may come out with various misinterpretations, like you're being sarcastic or "being fake". Like my professor used to say, in Brazil 65-70% is intonation rather than grammar or content.

Porta is pronounced “pórta” in Portugal :)

I know you live in Lisbon, but your "Brazilian Portuguese" is perfect. Most Brazilians don't even remember that "vós" exists! In the south of Brazil, "tu" is used a lot. However, it is very common to make a grammatical error in using "tu" with the conjugation of the third personal singular. Another interesting point is that the portuguese people do not use the "futuro do préterito" (example: eu gostaria), but rather "pretérito imperfeito" (example: eu gostava). This sounds very strange to Brazilians, apart from several words that are different.

@@MatheusLegenda Justamente. Em Portugal, pretérito imperfeito com o sentido codicional é muito usado coloquialmente (também é usado da mesma maneira em Galego). Em registo formal é utilizado o condicional (== futuro do pretérito).

a vantagem de portugues brasileiro é que fica mais facil de ser compreendido em países hispânicos.

Apesar de ser a mesma língua, o português europeu e o português brasileiro, elas são diferentes. Português europeu é stress-timed, só que o português brasileiro NÃO É stress-timed, e sim syllable-timed como italiano e espanhol. não é que nós (sou brasileiro) tendemos a falar as silabas, e sim como a estrutura da língua é mesmo. Por isso que mesmo sendo a mesma língua, são línguas "diferentes".

I live in French Guyana and i know a lot of brazilian people. But i don't speak the language. I speak spanish and french but i'd love to learn portugese.

For me actually it is easier to understand European Portuguese. When I first started studying I learned Brazilian Portuguese and I struggled a little with the numerous accents, pronunciations, and variations in Brazil. Being of Latin American decent and fluent in Latin American variety of Spanish (Puerto Rico) I assumed Brazilian Portuguese would be more natural to me. Once I compared it to European Portuguese things became so clear and now I can understand them both, as I have also lived in Spain. To me European Portuguese sounds so much more like European Spanish that it helped me distinguish the words more easily, which I was then able to translate to the Brazilian varieties. Odd I know, as they are so different and those differences fascinate me endlessly too, similarly to how all of the Spanish varieties can differ, yet not as extensively as Portuguese 🙂

Portugal has their fair share of regional slangs and expressions but the variety in Brazil is enormous, so it actually doesn't surprise me that you found it to be difficult. If you hear a São Paulo native and a Rio de Janeiro native speaking to each other, you'll notice their accent is quite different. And then all of the other regional accents as well...

Em Portugal diz se dia, no Brasil diz diiia. Em Portugal diz se feliz porque o 'e' não leva acento. No Brasil diz se "féliz". Eles pronunciam feliz como se o 'e' fosse acentuado. O Brasileiro tb costuma pronunciar vogais onde elas não existem, tais como: - "adevogado" (advogado), - "nois" (nós), - "abissurdo" -(absurdo), etc.. Tb falham na conjugação do verbo: "tu vai", "nois vai"

The european Portuguese is in fact more difficult for foreigners (I think). Even I I'm being a native (Brazilian) I don't understand what they're saying when they speak too fast.

Who am I to say? I am brazilian and I know Brazilian Portuguese has some differences than European Portuguese. They say that Brazilian Portuguese is more beautiful to hear. But both of them are very dificult to learn.

Initially yes I think Brazilian Portuguese is easier initially however due to the better education system in Portugal so many more students have exposure to foreign languages like English which allows them to figure out badly pronounced Portuguese easier then Brazilians not to mention switching to English if all else fails. Also more Brazilians tend speak in a more informal manner especially in the poorer areas.

Another grammar point that is easier in Brazilian Portuguese is the placement of oblique pronouns. There are a couple rules for their placement in European Portuguese, but in colloquial Brazilian Portuguese they're always placed before the verb. So both "I love you” and "I don't love you" would be "te amo" and "não te amo" in BP, respectively, but "amo-te" and "não te amo" in EP.

Why would someone chose to study language because of ease? I never took up anything I am intested in because of ease. Personally I really dislike Brazilian and I tend to like Portuguese a lot more. But if it was up to me, I would learn Italian which I find a much nicer language to hear.

@@luisamotta4081 Not to me. To me there is Portuguese that is clearly a local development in Portugal. There is Brazilian, that is clearly unique and has had a unique development in Brazil. The both developped from the same substrate (Portuguese) and hve had their own development. To me they are similar, but not the same. A bit like Dutch and Afrikaans. I am Dutch (too) and I can understand Afrikaans speakers fine, it is just a different kind of Dutch with its own development. Afrikaans did develop further for sure than Brazilian did to Portuguese on one hand but both had influence of local languages and of immigrants in it. The constuction "European Portuguese" to me is rather ludicrous. Of course it is European Portuguese. There is one Portugal and that is in Europe. SInce there is no other Portuguese speaking country in Europe and no such thing in SOuth America either, the logic would dictate "European Portuguese" vs "South American Portuguese". Which makes no sense either: there is one country that talks the language and that is Brazil. So there should be one option: Portuguese vs Brazilian Portuguese. Or, to make it easier: Portuguese vs Brazilian. Or another angle: we have Dutch and we have VLaams. Vlaams the Belgian version of Dutch. They are both Dutch. So what language to they speak in Flanders: it is either Dutch or it is FLemish. But it is never "Belgian Dutch". Everyone know Flemish is a form of Dutch. Everyone knows Brazilian is a form of Portuguese I guess. It is clear we make a distinction, otherwise it would all be just Portuguese. For the sake of it call on Portuguese (logically from Portugal) and the other Brazilian (unique to Brazil).

Is Brazilian Portuguese easier to understand and learn…the short answer is, oh my god yes. The longer answer is, oh my fucking god yes.

Lamento dizer isso, mas o português brasileiro é considerado o padrão mundial, por isso é ensinado em todo o mundo, assim como o inglês britânico é para o inglês americano. O português brasileiro é muito mais bonito quando falado. Acho que é a influência do italiano no Brasil que faz o português brasileiro "cantar" quando falado corretamente.

Na verdade, eu estava em uma aula quando um dos meus colegas estava planejando uma viagem a Portugal. Ela reclamou da falta de instrução disponível em português de Portugal. Eu tenho minhas razões para aprender a língua portuguesa. Na Europa, estou pensando na França, o português de Portugal é ensinado lá, assim como o inglês britânico é ensinado lá. Nos Estados Unidos, o português do Brasil é ensinado aqui com muito mais frequência do que o português de Portugal. Outro exemplo é o Japão, eles ensinam inglês americano, então acho que muito do que é ensinado em um determinado país depende do próprio país.

Eu sou carioca e as vezes eu tenho mais facilidade em entender um espanhol falando do que um português falando (mesmo sem nunca ter estudado espanhol). E olha que o sotaque carioca é o mais próximo do sotaque pt-pt. Sem ser rude, apenas exemplificando, a impressão que me dá é que os portugueses não abrem a boca para falar.

O problema no Brasil é que nunca se ouve falar o português de Portugal. O espanhol aparece nos media com frequência. Para mim é estranho que os Brasileiros só ouvem falar o Português europeu quando visitam Portugal pela primeira vez. Esse facto é verificado pelos vídeos que os brasileiros fazem quando visitam Portugal e a surpresa que têm quando ouvem as pessoas falar.

How come "due to your appearance"??? That's totally nonsense! ANY appearance would be common here in Brazil, we have INUMEROUS nationalities here! If anyone, with ANY appearance spoke with a Brazilian accent, this person would pass for a native in the streets of Brazil in the exactly same way

I’ve been studying Portuguese for over 8.5 years now and I’ve visited Brazil 18 times but I still can’t converse or read yet which is very frustrating. I’ve been practicing every day with my girlfriend for over 5.5 years now but I still can’t understand her and I have to translate everything into English to understand what people are saying. Even the words that I know have to be translated word for word. They just don’t mean anything to me when I see or hear them. I have classes, use apps, read books and watch movies and KZread videos. If I don’t translate I can’t understand anything except greetings.

You need to consume comprehensible input. It took me 1000 hours (2 years) to learn Spanish and now I even understand 85% of Portuguese despite never hearing the language until today.

Acho que é ao contrário. Esse "Portugal" e "vogal" ou qualquer palavra terminada em "L" em termos audíveis colocam um "u" que não existe. Portugau, Vogau, Brasiu, etc.

Brazilian Portuguese simplified grammar to a great extent, especially in colloquial speech. In that aspect, from the point of view of a speaker from Portugal, it's like Brazilians only acquired half of the Portuguese language. So, I guess that from a grammatical point of view, Brazilian Portuguese is easier than European Portuguese. On the other hand, differences between colloquial and standard Brazilian Portuguese are much wider than differences between colloquial and standard European Portuguese, so anyone learning Brazilian Portuguese kind of has to learn two different languages. That will not happen with European Portuguese as in Portugal you can speak standard Portuguese everywhere with everyone with no problem at all.

Na verdade, no Brasil, o português coloquial é empregado em ambientes informais. Não obstante, a norma padrão de ambos países são semelhantes e aplicada de maneira rigorosa em vestibulares, concursos e em ambientes laborais. Por fim, o ponto interessante dos brasileiros não perceberem o PT-PT provém do fato do Brasil não receber nenhuma produção cultural portuguesa e tanto pouco de outros países. Abraço!

Não estou tão certo de que assim seja. A título de exemplo, as regras de colocação dos pronomes clíticos, tanto quanto sei, são as mesmas nas gramáticas portuguesas e brasileiras, no entanto, nunca encontrei um texto brasileiro que seguisse essas regras, e estou a referir-me inclusive a textos como teses de mestrado. A nível oral, está a dizer que num contexto laboral algum brasileiro diz " deixa-me ver" em vez de " deixa eu ver"? Só vendo, ou neste caso, ouvindo, para crer. Finalmente, o Brasil não recebe conteúdos de Portugal porque não quer recebê-los. Quanto aos poucos que recebe, como normalmente são dobrados em brasileiro, provavelmente o comum do cidadão brasileiro nem consegue aperceber-se de que se trata de um conteúdo oriundo de Portugal.

I don’t understand what open and closed vowels are even with her explanation. There are lots of things I don’t understand. I’ve never had problems learning until I began studying Portuguese.

Colloquial Brazilian Portuguese is almost a creole of the Portuguese language: Less sounds, less grammar and even it can be considered bad grammar in some instances ("tu vai", etc.), less vocabulary - yes In Portugal people usually know more synonyms, and because of a lot of contact with Brazilian culture many know also Brazilian words. To my ears Portuguese from Portugal sounds much more sophisticated. This means that Brazilian is bad, no it doesn't - if it allows people to communicate with one another than it is fulfilling its role. And there are beautiful songs in Brazilian Portuguese for instance. I was just comparing the Brazilian colloquial language to Portuguese from Portugal where the colloquial language is much closer to the formal one. Regarding the two Portuguese versions and Spanish, I think Portuguese from Portugal, although much more complex in terms of phonetics it is much closer to Spanish (from Spain?!) in terms of grammar. I think that for a Spanish person, it is much easier to read a text in Portuguese from Portugal than a Brazilian text, especially if it uses a lot of colloquial phraseology. It might be easier for a Spanish speaker to understand spoken Brazilian Portuguese, but there are some difficulties so easier phonetics can't help in every situation. For example the very strange "txi", "dji" for "te" and "de", the "L" pronounced as "U" might confuse the listener. Just my 2 cents.

Brazilian portuguese isn't "almost a creole language" though. It's just a variety of portuguese that changed a lot, while the European variety also changed a lot more than (say) european spanish since the colonial period. That's why the two are so different. I think that it's absurd to say brazilian portugy se has "less grammar and less vocabulary" just because we use a different grammar and vocabulary than europeans, by the way. But well, whatever you want to think, you're entitled to

Existem sotaques no Brasil que eu não entendo. Moro no Rio de Janeiro e tenho dificuldade em entender o que certas pessoas de Minas Gerais dizem. Por incrível que pareça, para mim é mais fácil entender um espanhol falando que certos portugueses. Português dos Açores?! Sem chance! 😁 Aliás, introduzimos mais vogais nas palavras. Exemplos: vocêIs, trêIs. Para a pronúncia de "três" e "seis" ser mais marcada, usamos "meia" no lugar de "seis".

Cara, o ÚNICO português que realmente é difícil de se entender é o da ilha dos Açores, mas esse é difícil até mesmo para os portugueses em geral entenderem, agora de resto é apenas uma questão de vc acostumar o seu ouvido com o sotaque, uns 15 minutinhos escutando e vc vai estar escutando o Português de Portugal da mesma forma que escuta o Brasileiro, não tem essa! Eu percebo que muitos brasileiros tentam EXAGERAR, e muitas vezes CRIAR mesmo uma diferença que na real não existe, é a exata mesma língua!

O português (de Portugal) é o único correcto, todos os outros, não importa quanta gente o fale, não passam duma imitação pobre e deformada do português de Portugal. O brasileiro é mais agradável ao ouvido dos estrangeiros? Pode ser. Mais fácil de entender? É possível. É falado por mais gente e há mais conteúdo disponível nesse idioma? É tudo possível e verdade. Isso não invalida o facto do português de Portugal ser o único verdadeiramente puro. O brasileiro é uma deformação do português que fere os ouvidos dos Portugueses na forma como as frases são construídas ou na pronúncia inventada e exótica de certas palavras. Umas vezes faz rir, outras até dá vontade de chorar.

My ears are full of pain when I hear PT Portuguese as it is so rude and so unpleasant. It looks like people are trying to speak Spanish but they have full mouth of stones. Brasilian PT is more soft and close to ES.

You are the rude one! You can find it unpleasant, good for you, but to call a language rude, besides being extremely unpolite, in doesn't make sense! Besides that, not aknowledging a language that is over 700 years, considering it as "someone trying to speak Spanish" is, yet again, unpolite and rude! I think I can speak for everyone in Portugal: we couldn't care less if everybody prefers Brazilian Portuguese, but we want respect! We have to deal with all the hateful and xenophobic coments coming from brazilian people... that's enough! I think that the brazilians who understand you will love your comment because, for some strange reason, they take "pride" in the way the talk! Good luck on going to Brazil, so you don't "hurt" your ears: the majority of people there don't speak English (the other way around, the majority of people here speak or at least understand English)!
