    *Clarification* - Turns out it was a misaligned 'Japanese quartz' inside (likely a cheap Miyota or Seiko), rather than a Chinese one. I never bothered opening the case for this video because I thought there was no point if I was returning the watch anyway. Moving forward, if I'm not sure of the movement, I'll always open the rear just to check. Nevertheless, it doesn't take away from the poor misalignment and quality control that are on display there. It also does nothing to alleviate the inherently flawed bracelet design. ALSO: Some sections of this video have been blurred post-upload to avoid breaking Amazon’s updated terms of service for their affiliate program. Affiliates are no longer permitted to use Amazon web pages in their videos, and we can’t afford to get booted, as it makes up a large portion of our revenue. They threatened to boot us if we didn’t comply. It sucks, right?

    I read a really interesting article about second hand alignment recently. Essentially when a watch is hand assembled (which is often associated with a higher quality time piece) it's nearly impossible to get the second hand aligned in such a way that it hits all the markers. A second hand hitting the markers has nothing to do with the movement inside, and everything to do with the technician who assembled it. That's just the nature of quartz watches, and I've seen quartz watches at all sorts of price points hitting and missing second marks to varying degrees. The only way to get perfect alignment is with complete machine assembly, which requires huge investment, and allows watches to be mass produced. Casio is one of the few brands that has done this. Swatch has as well. So a misaligned second hand isn't necessarily a mark of poor craftsmanship or an inferior movement, and likewise a perfectly aligned second hand probably just indicates that the watch was mass produced on machines without any human involvement. All that said, the alignment does look particularly bad on that Braun watch. They should at least be able to get it to hit some of the markers.

    Exactly. The article I read about it was on Vaer's site. It's a decent read. journal.vaerwatches.com/watch-second-hand-not-aligned/ Honestly, this used to bug the hell out of me too. Until I moded a few watches and realized just how damn hard it is to get that second hand lined up perfectly. Now I just take it in stride. The reality is that even on mechanical and autos the second hand will be misaligned just as much as a quartz watch. It's just you never notice it. The hand is constantly moving and as it moves 6-8 times a second it's eventually going to line up more. Which is also one reason I'm a big fan of sweeping quartz watches like Bulova. Even if it's a little off, you won't really notice it.

  • @havvacuppa
    @havvacuppa4 жыл бұрын

    No, you're not unlucky. Braun is more than just a fashion watch brand, they have a long and illustrious history and their design philosophy has become iconic, but their build quality is RUBBISH. I've very optimistically bought 3 Braun watches over the years, including the ridiculously expensive "Prestige" chrono, and if the only problem you've had so far is a misaligned second hand, just wait until you've owned it a little longer and the REAL problems begin. That second WILL fall off eventually, the strap will disintegrate, none of the 6 hands on the chrono will behave as they should, any coating on the case or strap will scratch and chip away...and try changing the battery on the chrono - they've deliberately designed it so you have to take the whole watch apart via the front, although Braun recommend you send it to them to do it, 40 QUID to change a BATTERY! You're right Ben, it's stupidity on their part, as by saving a little on quality control, they've now ensured I will never buy any product from the Braun range ever again, and will recommend anyone I know to avoid them like the plague. How to ruin a great brand. BTW, is that a Stoke accent? ;)

    the problem with braun watches is: its not braun anymore. Brauns watch brand is a part of Zeon ltd (witch also owns the international watchbrand "ingersoll" (in the us, ingersoll is still a part of timex, both starts as waterbury watch company), Jack Wills (never heart of) and Vivian Westwood. Zeon Ltd almost never told, witch company builds their movements, but, in therms of ingersoll, its a well known secret, that the movements come from seagull watch company. its easy to suspect, that the movement in their quartz lineups also comes from seagull.

    it's not an issue with the movement, I've seen the same with much more expensive watches too. They are cutting costs on the production line by not making sure the second hands are properly aligned when fitting them.

  • @arcadely
    @arcadely4 жыл бұрын

    That *is* a very attractive watch. The weird thing is I can't even see much in the way of backlash on the second hand (maybe it's just not coming across in the video) so in theory it should be possible to adjust the movement so the second hand hits the indices every time. The issue with the bracelet is just bizarre. I was going to suggest swapping out the bracelet but looking again, even though it's not integrated, I'm not sure how well a third party bracelet would fit. I have a couple of nice WatchGecko Milanese bracelets that I enjoy wearing and I think have more flex than the bracelet on that Braun. Two issues though: (i) the pattern of "chain links" is coarser, which would change the appearance, and (ii) the coarser links make the bracelets thicker, which means they might not fit under the lug piece and, even if they did, you may still run into issues with lack of flex because I don't think they'd be able to rotate freely around the springbar. Anyway... you've got me started because the second hand issue is a huge pet peeve of mine on quartz watches. You see it on a lot of different brands, even "better" brands such as Seiko, Citizen and Casio (although all are capable of making watches where this isn't an issue). Where it gets really aggravating is when you start to enter luxury territory. If you really want to make yourself grumpy (not recommended) go and look at some Tag Heuer quartz Aquaracers next time you walk past a jeweller that sells them. They start at around £1200 and I defy you to find one that consistently nails the indices. They look nice enough but, movement quality wise, I can't help thinking they're a bag of shite. It's outrageous at the prices they charge. This is the main reason I usually wear automatics: even really inexpensive ones move the second hand 5 - 6 times per second so you never really notice whether they're bang on the marker or not. And if it's not one of those it'll be my Pro Trek which has a digital display and is built to be beaten up. Anyway, rant over.

Also it depends on the setting of the markers. Bring it to a watchmaker and he makes it hit the points exactly. I’m sure if it is a Swiss movement, we can expect some precision. But in the end it will never be a citizen0-100. It is a 60€ watch.

    Turns out neither of us were correct. It's not a RONDA quartz (or Chinese surprisingly); it's just a massively misaligned Japanese one instead. I never opened it because...what's the point? If it's way off, then it doesn't matter - it's getting returned regardless. I don't fancy having to mess around to properly align a movement; a job that should have been done correctly on the production line in my opinion 👍

    That’s just a mistake on the part of the watchmaker who put the second hand on the cannon pinion. You could take it to a watchmaker who could fix it for you for 15-35 quid. Not ideal, but this is the reality for cheaper quartz watches. Certainly has nothing to do with the movement. But I feel your pain. As watch lovers, the devil’s in the details, and misalignment really hurts. Edit: also, I would always avoid watches that have integrated bracelets. You could easily swap that out for another strap if they hadn’t chosen to integrate it into the case. Swatch is bad about this as well.

    i have an original braun aw10 in my collection and it is a fantastic piece, the reason why the design of these watches is so nice is because it's based on this 1970's watch (which is also based on a previous design, Dieter Rams's alarm clock to be exact), and the build quality is undoubtably very good, but the thing with these watches is that they've never been "watches" as much as design pieces, it obviously doesn't justify the near unwearability of that one you just purchased, that's an example of bad design, and the aw10 was in fact much smaller and i can confirm, it is very wearable, but still, the seconds hand not hitting the markers is a really minor detail on a watch like this, they've never had particularly good movements simply because they weren't supposed to, heck my aw10 even stops completely at times, then comes back to life randomly! you need to take these watches for what they are, if you want a good reliable simple watch you get a timex, if you want a watch to look at and have an interesting conversation about with the secondary ability to tell the time, then you get a Braun. I would certainly not get a Braun as my only watch tho, while a timex is a very good "jack of all trades" watch.

    I would like to add my 2 cents here. Despite the main complaints presented in the video I was tempted by the Amazon promo (55 EUR/45 GBP/60 USD) and bought a black face on a bracelet version. In my case, there were no problems. The second-hand hits the indexes perfectly, and with my average wrist size (around 17.5 cm/6.9 inches) there is no big issue with the bracelet protruding. Actually, you can lightly put pressure on both ends of the bracelet. It will bend slightly, just enough to fit perfectly on your hand. The watch itself makes a good impression in person with a truly minimalist and elegant design. After all, it follows the principles of the design icon - Dieter Rams. The quality of materials is also satisfactory. So, for someone with a medium-sized wrist (I think 17,5cm/6.9in is the minimum to avoid the bracelet complaint) at this price, I think it would be difficult to buy something of similar quality and appearance. And if you find a flawed piece you can always return it.

I wore it practically every day and I really liked it. Never noticed if it had a misaligned second hand but I probably also wasn't really paying attention it. Then one day at work the crown broke off through an accident. I contacted the Braun support in Germany inquiring about repair. They never got back to me which I find a real shame. The best part is that the earliest opinion with this issue dated from 2018, and the latest one from 2021, at least 3 years of selling broken watches. If I already owned it and it broke, i would simply buy a new movement, slap it in and call it a day, but receiving a broken watch is an absolute lack of care for your brand image, and Braun has a lot to lose.

    I think Braun watches are made by Zeon, which is part of the Heald group. Zeon make or have made watches for many brands. Watches are mass manufactured.

    I've had a very disappointing experience with one of their more high-end digital watches. The same issue: sloppy quality control. Great design, but lousy execution. One of the most frustrating watch brands I've seen, because I really like their designs, which also happen to be quite unique. But as long as they don't perform much better on the quality front, I'm not going to buy any of their watches.

    As I know only advanced japanese quartz movements have perfect second hand alignment. The most affordable is probably Casio's ProTrek PRG-600.

    But can they restore it's position after let's say a hit or shake? Casios definitely can, because they're do correct hands automatically after misalignment if it happened.

    I have had a Braun BN0035 chronograph for the past year, and I've loved it. I got a great deal on Amazon, getting it for £100 instead of £215. After looking at online reviews and on the official Braun watches, their watches use Japanese Miyota movements, so at least they're not super cheap Chinese ones. My watch has been keeping time great and still looks great. Loses not much time and the second hand hits the markers the majority of the time. For my chronograph, I think it could be a misaligned dial ring more than anything. The buttons are feel great, and so does the watch build quality overall. Maybe it's because the BN0035 is a more high end Braun watch that the quality is better. Any Braun watch made in Germany, notably the historic AW10 is of immense quality, fitted with a Swiss Ronda movement and much more premium packaging etc. Of course there is a higher price tag to pay, £200 RRP, but I feel it is justified for a German made Swiss movement watch which has famous heritage in the design world. It's hit and miss with Braun. I wouldn't ignore them completely, for their designs are iconic and their higher end watched are good quality. I've thoroughly enjoyed mine, and I hope to add the Made in Germany AW10 EVO in my collection one day.

    I've got a Seiko quartz type II from 1977 that hits each single mark 100% of the time, and has a steady, quick moving hand. No jerking motion like a lot of quartz. Not even serviced. And this early quartz watch is not even on the high end of quartz watches from that period. All this packaged in beautiful case design, a funky hexagonal crystal, and a stunning green dial with a forest like finishing pattern into it, with applied markers. You can get one for a little more money and a lot more reward. This piece of garbage right there is a disposable object and the worst part is that most people won't mind it. You're right to rant. It's not even a " you get what you pay for ", we just get ripped of, that's a 10 euros watch at best, and they'd still make a solid profit out of each sale.

They look incredible.. But thats it.. Looks. In germany.. At least in my area.. There is not a single braun watch around.. And nobody know that they make watches... Btw does anybody know the milano single hand watch? It looks incredible
