The steel cased issues in a ARs is greatly exaggerated. My thoughts on the matter have always been if it's not a good enough gun to cycle anything reliably then it's not good enough to take to the field.

Most Ar mfg over gas their rifles so they will shoot under powered steel case ammo.I for one will only buy properly gassed Ars.Properly gassed guns will shoot steel but the barrel will wear much faster than brass.I recommend building a rifle to train with shoot plenty of steel and replace the barrel and rebuild the bolt.

I'm s firm believer in " if it can't run steel, it doesn't deserve brass". With that being said, as far as long term storage goes, I exclusively store brass cased, "ballistic tip" ( hollowpoint, soft point or " penetrators") rounds. Nothing exactly "premium" by any means; but somewhere between the " good" rounds I keep in mags, and the rounds I use to train with. Typically, the rounds in storage are as identical as possible to what I have at the ready... While range trash is just used to have fun.

Good info...I had that happen to me using some 9mm ammo from Walmart with this lacquer on it and I thought it was a lacquer that melted from the barrel. I still have almost a hundred 50 rounds of this ammo left that I haven't used yet because of that.

Be aware if you shoot thousands of rounds, you’ll have to clean way more and probably replace some parts. It will still always be more cost effective to shoot steel and replace parts as necessary.

You are correct about the chamber becoming sticky with carbon when using steel case ammo. Some AR rifles will run steel much better than others, which seems to perplex many. The problem with many AR rifle chambers is the fact the chambers are not cut properly. Manufacturers will re-use and over sharpen their chamber broaches too many times leaving a tight or out of spec chamber. I have seen this in many popular and high end so called mill spec barrels. I use a function gauge to test all of my new barrels and it never lies.. Always check head space ( preferably with incremental head space gauges), chamber size with a function gauge, gas port size using pin gauges,. barrel journal to gas block fit and check the bore with a bore scope before trusting the barrel with your life. Range shooting toys are a different ball game..

The only time I ever had a stuck case in my AR was with a really good Black Hills 5.56 shell. But that was a minor one I would say because I’ve got over 5,000 rounds through it , mostly steel case Tulla but a lot of different brass as well. And it wasn’t from shooting the brass right after shooting steel without cleaning. The gun was cleaned immaculately and it was the very first round of brass of the day that got stuck. It ran beautifully after that though.

  • @myusername3689

Steel cased ammo should only be used in delayed blowback firearms. The higher pressure can cause brass cases to erupt during extraction (no matter how high the pressure of a cartridge is, the chamber walls will prevent it from bursting, but if the bolt starts extracting when the pressure is still high, like in blowback firearms, the friction between the still expanding case against the chamber wall will rip apart the brass and cause a horrific malfunction). So definitely use steel cased ammo in delayed blowback firearms. Otherwise, use brass cases.

My PSA ARs eat steel cased no problem. My Stag on the other hand was about to get disowned because it was a picky little bitch when it came to steel cased. I saw another YT vid by a guy (Kiss My Brass) who used a “chamber hone” (polisher really) to fix that problem. So I bought one on Amazon and gave it a try; also bought the recommended lubricant. I did three one-minute hones stopping to lube in between, then cleaned the rifle. Since then the Stag handles steel like a champ. For prepping purposes, my safe has no room for finicky rifles that hate steel. I'm not the Feds, so since it’s my cash I have to stockpile steel cased HP/SP ammo . I do trust it now to reliably protect my family out to 200m, assuming at least a 4” point blank zero at the range.

I'd also use No Go's to check barrels to make sure they are not worn out. I'd also weigh my rds. Stuff out of Russia may have no powder or excess powder in the round resulting in over pressure or a bullet stuck in barrel and catastrophic gun failure

There has been proof of premature barrel wear with steel on high speed rifles such as your AR, BUT that only applies if your rifle is not cleaned regularly. Just like the lucky gunnar test where steel ammo shot out the barrels at 6K rounds... That had everything to do with mag dumps and not cleaning the guns, the two worst things you can do. Pistols however, with far less pressures, speed, or other stress factors, have proven to not have damaged barrels due to steel ammo. Of course, the quality of the ammo itself is going to be a bit dirtier and less dependable (why I wouldn't use it as self defense) but otherwise is completely acceptable for target practice. Pistols= no worries Rifles= no worries if you clean frequently

Jordan IMP It happened with my Glock 23 yesterday. 200 rounds of Wolf steel case .40 ball ammo, a casing locked in my chamber. I finally was able to eject it and it had carbon build up all over the outside casing. My weapons are well maintained and my Glocks have never jammed with brass. As far as I’m concerned, steel case isn’t even range worthy.

My problem with Lacquered steel ammo is in the Chamber and lugs , the Lacquer on the steel cases melt turning into hard , sticky sand like crystals and will seize the empty case in the Chamber . your rifle is now out of the fight . removing the jammed case requires a rod and hammer , and now your Chamber has scars and scratches . this is not a failure to extract , the extractor was not designed to eject a seized case . Why on earth would you build a fine precision tool and then trust your life with the crappiest of crap ammo ??????? DI verses Piston is irrelevant to the jamming of lacquer coated steel . Clean Brass for me .

A problem with your AR being " over-gassed " because you drilled out / expanded the gas port ? No Sweat ! Just simply get an adjustable gas block from Superlative Arms that expends the excess gas out of the gas block itself rather than pushing the excess unwanted gas back down the barrel & through the gas tube. Works Awesome !

If you’re have trouble running steel out of your AR, you need a better BCG (with stronger firing pin) and just need to lube up your gun. It’s not rocket science. There are Navy Seal instructors that also lightly lube their steel in a box before loading mags. I’ve seen this a ton of times in tactical courses. Also, if your gun just refuses to eat steel, it’s probably not worth relying on and you should put tampons on it and send it to the dump.

You shouldn't have to over lube a firearm to make it work properly with shit ammo, most problems with people that own pistols are because of too much lube and lube in the wrong place. If your too cheap to buy brass your shouldn't buy a 2k+ rifle.

laced Gaming an AR is totally different than a pistol. ARs are meant to be run wet, unlike a Glock. You’re comparing apples to oranges. And if your rifle won’t run steel, you need a new rifle. I have well over 2k in my main rifle and I’ll run steel or brass. I’ll even run both in the same mag. If your rifle is quality, it will eat anything

Wolf most certainly still has ammo that is lacquer coated, usually under the Mil Spec line. Wolf is more like an ammo importation brand than an ammo manufacturer. Different manufacturers make ammo for them, usually the Barnaul stuff is lacquer coated. As far as steel cased ammo being loaded lighter, that only applies to some .223. Other calibers are generally clones of the military loadings or very close to it. The .223 made by Vympel is near M193, and is sold as Golden Tiger or Red Army Standard right now.

I shoot cheap steel ammo in my cheap Deland AR and allot of it. We are 4 months into 2019 and I have 2,000 rds through it so far this year. Easily 5,000 rds last year. I use it in my Glock 19 and Kel Tec Sub 2000. Never 1 problem. ( gun smith friend checked rifling too ) Now the Tulammo ( Tula Ammo , Tula is the cities name ) in .357 Mag is a different story. I used it in 2 guns; the Ruger GP 100 and Colt Python. Every single round used got stuck in the cylinder due to over expansion. Hammer out stuck! Got em out with no damage to the guns. I'm in the process of trying to return 1000 rds of the .357 Mag now. This is the one time I didn't buy 1 box to test first, go figure. One thing that may make a difference in my case with the .223 and 9 mm. I clean my guns EVERY time i'm done shooting so build up is not an issue for me. I use good ole Hoppes no 9, Rem Oil, and just lately some new fangled organic cleaner and organic lube stuff that i'm not so sure about yet. I even got one of those new gun grease syringes for the AR. I might even open it someday.

Is brass better? Yes. But the truth is the difference between the two is marginal in most cases. Steel can actually be made slightly softer than brass however it's not quite as elastic as brass. Here's a simple test. Does the military use steel cased ammo? Answer; yes they do. If steel cased ammo was unreliable the military wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
