Brass Oil Can Restoration [Polished Brass]

In this restoration video I am restoring a brass oil can. This old oil can is covered with a layer of patina. I would like to remove this protective layer in this restoration and let the antique oil can shine again in its old splendor.
▬ What did I do ?! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The first step in restoring is always to carefully disassemble all components. There are not many parts in this old oil can. Inside there is a layer of lime that I remove with sand and a cordless screwdriver by letting the antique oil can rotate with the sand for a long time. Now a mixture of flour, salt and vinegar, all in the same amount, is stirred together and poured onto the brass, using very simple household means. After a few hours, I've waited here for a day, you can turn this mixture down again. The patina is now peeled off and the brass only needs to be polished. I do the polishing with a bench grinder with a polishing wheel and polishing paste, which of course also takes some time, restoring takes patience. After everything has been polished to a high gloss, you can reassemble the oil can and lubricate everything possible with it.

I found this oil can in a garage I had bought. At first I didn't even know that it was made of brass, so I was all the more pleased when I found out. Because brass polished to a high gloss looks like gold and also has a great shine, what more could you want? I had a lot of fun doing this restoration because it doesn't take a lot of tools, just a little time to restore this antique oil can.
I used the following tools: tweezers, pliers, sand, cordless screwdriver, tape, scales, bowl, salt, flour, vinegar, cling film, multi-tool, funnel, vegetable oil, knife blade
It took me about 13h to restore.

Wow! I had no idea that it would turn out so beautiful. Unlike now, that oiler was manufactured in an era when aesthetics were almost as important as functionality. Can you imagine seeing a dozen of them brand new on a store shelf? What a sight that would have been.

That, is a plant sprayer. $25 on Amazon. You are supposed to put WATER in it, not oil.

Great job. One way to check to see if the item restoring is solid brass, is to use the magnet, if the magnet sticks then it’s brass coated, if it does not stick it is solid brass.

Muito Obrigado! A pasta de polimento, a azul é a fina, e depois a branca, que é mais para o aço porque é mais grossa. Para o latão, porém, o azul é completamente suficiente, o branco até faria mal. Portanto, basicamente não é uma pasta de polimento especial.

Marcello, se vc se refere a massa que ele usou para remover a oxidação do latão, é uma massa feita com farinha de trigo, vinagre e as vezes com um pouco de bicarbonato de sódio. Só misturar e aplicar sobre a superfície e deixar agir por um dia, depois só lavar com água e polir do modo que ele explicou.

Flour, salt and vinegar. This removes the patina from the brass very well...🐢

Hello Dave. Yes you can use it with water, but you can also find it on the internet with oil. It is said to have been used for sewing machine oil in the past.
