    Big thanks to Brandon for doing my request for Dungeonmaster. As a kid I would play dnd in the basement and spend the night down there every saturday night. After everyone went to bed I would sneak upstairs and sit in the hallway outside the living room watching the local channel's saturday night movie since my mom would always fall asleep with the tv on. Those were the first times I saw Fist of the North Star, Highway to Hell, Beastmaster, Cherry 3000 and Dungeonmaster (among other things) and it really shaped a lot of my interest in cult movies, so I've been looking forward to it being on the show.

    "Louis the XVIth? Isn't he the one who invented the guillotine?" That' so stupid it makes my brain hurt, but there is a certain irony to the fact that they were called the louisette (after the guy who actually built the prototype) before getting re-named for Guillotin, the doctor who proposed using the thing as a more humane way to execute people. So at one point it at least sounded a little like Louis XVI, although he was more an end user than a creator of the thing.

  • @garrick3727

    @garrick3727

    Жыл бұрын

    The movie isn't totally wrong, since Louis the XVIth was a patron of the guillotine. Obviously, he wasn't expecting it to be used against himself slightly later. Perhaps not the soundest investment, although he was going to get killed by something and perhaps the guillotine wasn't the worst option.

    Fun Fact "real life" black magician and self proclaimed beast of the book of revelation Aleister Crowley liked to tell the story that as a curious young boy to find out if cats really did have nine lives took a cat and "killed" it nine different ways to see if it would come back. Hearing Malevolous' or whatever his name is, story about tortouring a cat as a lad makes me want to believe that this movie is canonically the further adventures of Aleister Crowley after all he needed to find another worthy opponent after his wizard battle for control of the sacred artifacts of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn against fellow master of the mystic arts Irish poet W.B.Yeats. (Yes this actually happened)

    I gotta think the opener was a combo of things. On the one hand, both of his dreams are kind of portents to what's coming his way with Mestema. Both have somewhat mystical elements and both have the women of his life in them. That brings me to the second point; the lady in the opener is sort of his mental image of CAL. That to me is what the 'linking up' Gwen brings up a little later is all about. She's weirded out by CAL and alludes to it being like an affair, particularly given CAL has a feminine voice and the like. In Paul's subconscious, it translates to that.

    I agree. Furthering the idea, Paul relies on the computer to do almost everything for him until the last two challenges, where he first claims "I don't even need my computer for this", then challenges Mestema to hand to hand combat. I suppose it's supposed to imply that people shouldn't rely on computers so much. Though, it sort of falls short after the computer has to create the pole for him to grab onto, saving him from the hole. Wait... Pole grab? No diving into the hole? Maybe the whole thing was just a visualization of a wet dream, after all...

Two of the stories got seperate releases in 2012 & 2013, The Evil Clergyman, an H.P. Lovecraft-story starring Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, David Gale & David Warner, & a sequel to Trancers, which got the name Trancers: City of Lost Angels. My friend dragged me to this movie on it's opening day in the theaters. And considering that was the only time I saw it I remember a surprising amount of details. I still thinking of that "changing the streetlight" trick very often; usually when I'm walking up to a street corner(I know, weird, right?). I also remembered that before he was sent to the Wasp concert he had started playing some goofy MIDI music from his wristband thingy to taunt Richard Moll, who then said something like, "If you like that music so much then have your FILL of it!" and then transported him to the Troubadour(apparently). I thought that was weird because Wasp didn't sound at all like an electronica '80's band at all. And, yeah, I remember how the computer saved his life by projecting that energy beam to grab onto. I knew it wasn't great but any definition of the word but I remember at least being entertained. So that's gotta say something about the quality of the movie...right? Oh, and I also was confused as to why he got put into that silly outfit and the computer got turned into a wrist thing.

    So here's my theory. Paul is a genius and invented a technology with godlike abilities. Understanding the destruction it would cause in the wrong hands (let's face it you don't want Elon Musk with that kind of power), Paul instead keeps it to himself and uses it to make his life just ever so mildly convenient. He takes money as he needs it, gets himself a modest place, and overall keeps a low profile and enjoys life. However this catches the attention of an eldritch being that either is or pretends to be Satan who toys with Paul for reasons beyond mortal comprehension.

    Charles Band occupies a unique niche in my childhood memories, as I grew up watching the PREHYSTERIA! movies and DRAGONWORLD back in the 90's (and that was before I even saw the MST3K riff on LASERBLAST). They may have gone direct-to-video and might not have been exceptional movies, but they certainly did deliver a pleasant diversion... and in my childhood that was more than enough.
