Actor Julian Sands has been missing for almost 2 weeks now on the snowy Mt. Baldy in Southern California. The hiking trail he's believed to have taken is known to be very dangerous, and there're signs of multiple recent avalanches in the area. Despite the diligence of rescue teams combing the area, t's not looking good; Sands' brother has already made peace with the idea that he'll never see his brother again... Update: Julian Sands' remains were found in the mountains. He'd evidently already been dead for several months. RIP

According to Wiccan Folklore - Nails in your Door, Preferably in teh shape of a Cross or Star, will ward away evil spirits - A Tradition that remained in Irish Culture for Centuries until teh Mid 1800's ... And some Irish Folks still will put Nails in their doors at Halloween! Hence, The idea in the movie and yeah... Its pretty accurate! In fact, That one of the reasons I adore the movie... It did a great job of actually researching the Folklore (A Far better job than the Gardinarian Wiccans who are now hailed as the "Fathers of Modern Wicca... The Modern Wicca was founded by Two Naturists who wanted to see Young Girls get Naked - Hence their constant claims of Witches casting spells "Skyclad" or NUDE!!!)

Heck, the pentagram as a warning/ward *against* evil is still a thing in some parts of the world, and was only associated with the devil in the *20th* century. You'll still find devoutly Christian people from Africa wearing pentagram lockets to ward against the Devil. And the movie is actually really accurate about a lot of things - the toe cuffs, the magic spells, iron and salt being things that can hurt the Devil's servants, etcetera.

They actually worshipped a Male and Female God believing everything had a balance. And yeah - Sadly that does mean that teh religion can be unintentionally Anti-LGBTQ+ when you really think about it, but it is an ancient culture!!! The cultural roots of the German immigrant use of esoteric wood carvings and painted designs is pretty obscure these days. Pow-wow tradition never really hit mainstream and pretty much died out as anything but a curiosity in the 1800's when spiritualism took up the same niche. Now all you can find are a few architectural curiosities like protective woodcarvings and the cultural remnants that made it into the Evangelical movement post Civil War and eventually became modern faith healing. And of course the use of the upright pentangle as protection was culturally demolished the the Satanic Panic.

10:00 It's actually a nice subtle touch that the "Warlock" refers to himself as a witch, because "Witch" is actually a unisex term that applies to both male and female. "Witch" is old English for "wise" and the old vernacular used to be a "witch man" or a "witch woman", Warlock conversely means something more along the lines of "traitor". Whoever wrote this script actually bothered to do a little research. I'm impressed. 20:10 I can remember liking the 2nd movie more than the first, but I think it was also like "Leprechaun 2" in that it was a sequel IN NAME ONLY and had no connection to the first.

He did more than a little research. That apparent lunacy about being burned over a basket of cats was an actual thing in Europe (both with and without a witch involved) and got transplanted to the Salem area briefly. Never heard of it before this and I kind of wish I hadn't now. I also now know that Ypres (in Belgium) has a festival where they throw cats out of a belfry followed up by a witch burning and parades. These days the cats are plush toys for the kids and the burning's just a faked performance, but apparently they both used to be real. Presumably the when they were still using live (until impact, anyway) cats the kids didn't stand below trying to catch one - although given how deranged the whole thing is, maybe they did.

And I actually like Lori Singer in this. Though I think she should have torn the Grimoire into pieces and hide it in other places with high salt content. You've got the Dead Sea between Israel & Jordan, Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, Kati Thanda (aka Lake Eyre) in Australia... not only would he have to get past the salt, but there'd be a lot of travel involved.
