Brandon's Cult Movie Reviews: FELIDAE

I review the German animated film "Felidae" (1994) about the adventures of a talking cat. Ralph Bakshi would be proud... (Originally aired Nov. 29th, 2012)

Wow, I'm surprised there even is an English version of Felidae. I didn't know anyone outside of Germany even knew about this movie. Oh well. Speaking of mistaking this for a child friendly movie ... This actually came on the TV once, just past noon, promoted as a family movie on teletext. My parents just left me (and my older sister) to watch it without them. I was ... six, seven years old, maybe. Scarred me for life.

I found it on KZread when I was 8 and wasn't so lucky. I watched it up until the point that Felicity's gets decapitated and dropped it in horror. Its been 10 years and I've only just had the courage to finish it in order to put to rest my irrational fear of this movie. I was a huge fan of cats and really sensitive as a kid, so I was horrified for Felicity's owners walking in on their beloved cat in such a gruesome state. It scarred me. I had nightmares for months. Funny thing is, I was in the middle of reading the Warrior Cats book series back then, and that features cat deaths almost just as gruesome as this and even more heart wrenching. Somehow reading it and seeing it computed differently to me. I actually came across this show on KZread because I was looking for Warrior Cats animation and it came up as suggested videos. I lied about my age of course, who wouldn't. And that was that. You're lucky your grandma saved you the trauma.

Didn't see anyone else mention this, but the film is actually based on the 1989 debut novel by Turkish author Akif Pirinçci. It's the first book in a long-running German mystery series, as Francis goes on to solve other mysteries in his neighborhood; I think there are 8 books in the series to date, and the most recent one was published in 2012.

It's a little sad they don't explain it better in the movie, but in the book, it's implied that Francis has a sort of psychic ability that takes form in his dreams. It's suppose something all the cats can do, but most of them ignore it.

@@cartooncritique6625 It's an entire series of books (8 so far) that started in 1989. There were plans to make films based on the sequels, but the high budget, as well as the fact that author Akif Pririncci is a extremely right wing guy, who is anti-homo/transsexuals, the intake of refugees as well as being anti-islam. So he is shunned here in Germany now. Which is sad, because the following books, especially the third one, are really good. The movie actually lacks a lot of the character depth and the wacky humour that is mixed in with all the gruesome and sexual depictions in the books.

To me, Felidae and Watership Down have a lot in common as movies. The final fight at the end of Felidae was ripped straight from Watership Down. Someone else mentioned that there was no sex in Watership Down, which is true. But there's lots of implied sex, which was quite shocking for me when I was a kid. Plus, both Watership Down and Felidae have that cutesy feel which seems suited for kids but both movies are definitely NOT for kids. And both movies deal with issues straight from the books: Felidae with its eugenics and Watership Down with its totalitarian state run by a merciless dictator who won't let his subjects leave; much like North Korea or the former Soviet Union .

Pavel Marek LOL for crying out loud. I didn't mean LITERALLY ripped, as in animated over or directly copied. But they DID get several cues in the animation of the fight scene in Felidae from Watership down. Watership down, the movie, was animated in 1972; FAR earlier than Felidae. It's common practice in animation to take cues from other movies/ animation and here you can see that readily. Yes, they are both from novels. Felidae actually is a series of novels.

While something like Lady from Lady and the Tramp or Georgette from Oliver and Company are not because they are plain feral animal creatures who are pets basically and no one should get their rocks off them, sure they are pretty/lovable but they are just plain animal creatures as that draws the line. Just want to point out that CRT monitors intentionally designed with portrait mode in mind did exist. TBH, i only ever saw one once in a Macintosh IIsi with a Portrait Monitor. I assume at the time they were designed with writers, researchers, journalists, etc in mind, the kind of people who do a corpulent amount of typing as their main means of making a living. Though today a portrait monitor can be achieved by simply turning your smart phone or tablet. Even certain laptops now have swivel and flippable monitors along with the typical gyroscopic accelometers used in smart devices.

Yes, nine years later, this video is still great. It’s an uncommon idea for a movie, and your analysis of it is fantastic particularly the “Stormbringer” reference. I’ve avoided the album based on “Deep Purple Maxim #47”, which states: “Based on its place as the final Golden Era/Ritchie Blackmore album, with the band in emotional disrepair, and a "Southern Rock Tornado" on the album cover, it logically must contain subpar music.” Given your challenge of DPM #47 and myself being a long-toiling Drummer and fellow Rhythm Bro, I shall finally listen to “Stormbringer." Just as critical to the greatness of the video, and apologies if this has been mentioned somewhere in the last nine years, is the FACT that at 7:26-7:28, Brandon, YOU are providing voiceover work for the character onscreen. You were moonlighting at a VERY young age! Bravo!
