For those of you wondering The golden cat is actually the collective unconscious of all feline kind, it’s giving Francis visions so he can stop pascal from upsetting the balance of cat kind. Pascal was originally given his powers to stop the doctor from killing cats, but he went too far.
Wow, I'm surprised there even is an English version of Felidae. I didn't know anyone outside of Germany even knew about this movie. Oh well. Speaking of mistaking this for a child friendly movie ... I found it on KZread when I was 8 and wasn't so lucky. I watched it up until the point that Felicity's gets decapitated and dropped it in horror. Its been 10 years and I've only just had the courage to finish it in order to put to rest my irrational fear of this movie. I was a huge fan of cats and really sensitive as a kid, so I was horrified for Felicity's owners walking in on their beloved cat in such a gruesome state. It scarred me. I had nightmares for months. Funny thing is, I was in the middle of reading the Warrior Cats book series back then, and that features cat deaths almost just as gruesome as this and even more heart wrenching. Somehow reading it and seeing it computed differently to me. I actually came across this show on KZread because I was looking for Warrior Cats animation and it came up as suggested videos. I lied about my age of course, who wouldn't. And that was that. You're lucky your grandma saved you the trauma.
This flick makes WATERSHIP DOWN look like a G-rated Disney movie.

Didn't see anyone else mention this, but the film is actually based on the 1989 debut novel by Turkish author Akif Pirinçci. It's the first book in a long-running German mystery series, as Francis goes on to solve other mysteries in his neighborhood; I think there are 8 books in the series to date, and the most recent one was published in 2012.

It's a little sad they don't explain it better in the movie, but in the book, it's implied that Francis has a sort of psychic ability that takes form in his dreams. It's suppose something all the cats can do, but most of them ignore it.

I wasn't aware this movie was based on a book.
@ShadowAngel-lt8nw

@@cartooncritique6625 It's an entire series of books (8 so far) that started in 1989. There were plans to make films based on the sequels, but the high budget, as well as the fact that author Akif Pririncci is a extremely right wing guy, who is anti-homo/transsexuals, the intake of refugees as well as being anti-islam. So he is shunned here in Germany now. Which is sad, because the following books, especially the third one, are really good. The movie actually lacks a lot of the character depth and the wacky humour that is mixed in with all the gruesome and sexual depictions in the books.
"Masquerade, masquerade, Grab your mask and don't be late (Get out get out) Well disguised heat and fever in the air tonight....."
back in the 90s there were a lot of german animations produced, aimed at an older audience, this one has clearly the most beautiful art style and impressive animation, when compared to movies like "Das kleine Arschloch" or "Werner - Beinhart".
To me, Felidae and Watership Down have a lot in common as movies. The final fight at the end of Felidae was ripped straight from Watership Down. Someone else mentioned that there was no sex in Watership Down, which is true. But there's lots of implied sex, which was quite shocking for me when I was a kid. Plus, both Watership Down and Felidae have that cutesy feel which seems suited for kids but both movies are definitely NOT for kids. And both movies deal with issues straight from the books: Felidae with its eugenics and Watership Down with its totalitarian state run by a merciless dictator who won't let his subjects leave; much like North Korea or the former Soviet Union .
@TheSnakeman123456

Ripped ? You do realise both films are made from novels? Yes, the end fight in the book differs from the one we get in the film. But it sure as hell wasn't ripped from Watership Down.
@veelalynne

Pavel Marek LOL for crying out loud. I didn't mean LITERALLY ripped, as in animated over or directly copied. But they DID get several cues in the animation of the fight scene in Felidae from Watership down. Watership down, the movie, was animated in 1972; FAR earlier than Felidae. It's common practice in animation to take cues from other movies/ animation and here you can see that readily. Yes, they are both from novels. Felidae actually is a series of novels.

While something like Lady from Lady and the Tramp or Georgette from Oliver and Company are not because they are plain feral animal creatures who are pets basically and no one should get their rocks off them, sure they are pretty/lovable but they are just plain animal creatures as that draws the line. Just want to point out that CRT monitors intentionally designed with portrait mode in mind did exist. TBH, i only ever saw one once in a Macintosh IIsi with a Portrait Monitor. I assume at the time they were designed with writers, researchers, journalists, etc in mind, the kind of people who do a corpulent amount of typing as their main means of making a living. Though today a portrait monitor can be achieved by simply turning your smart phone or tablet. Even certain laptops now have swivel and flippable monitors along with the typical gyroscopic accelometers used in smart devices.

12:29 I think Francis knew that the faceless man and Dr. Pretarious were one in the same after he saw the clip of his experiments. In said clips, the only thing revealed on his face were his eyes, kinda like how his eyes flashed out in his original dream (along with the same, if not similar, haircut.)

@Mr. Roboto "You certainly do nazi something like that very often" That sentence makes no sense, but whatever.
I love adult animation like this: well produced, actually has a story, etc. Fritz the Cat, Heavy Metal, The Plague Dogs, Watership Down, etc. Anyone suggest anything else? Please no lo-budget crap that looks like I would probably need to soak my brain in LSD to enjoy (Ralph Bakshi's Wizards, I'm lookin at you). And, yes I know Heavy Metal has some serious production value issues as well, but somewhere between HM and Wizards is a line that I want to avoid crossing.

And with Germany now having joined the party, we officially know what the axis powers agreed to do after losing WWII, specifically freaking everyone the fuck out with demented animations.

Germany & Japan agreed to do that, Italy instead opted to make movies where real animals were killed.
My name is Felicety and I was so uncomfortable during the whole...ya know.. Felicity being a thing.
I saw this movie 11 years ago and I never thought I would see it again but geez once is enough.
Whenever I think I seen everything to offer there's always something new to fuel my nightmares. Cat mutilation and cat fucking, more horrors to haunt me tonight.
Fun Fact: Pascal aka Claudandus is voiced by British actor, John Hurt.
Wow this is disturbing.
The Helloween references was great! Glad to see I'm not the only metalhead that likes/makes reviews of cult flicks :-)
Boy i can't wait for the Warriors movie to come out!!!!1!1!

SkySlasher It means more Americans should be watching this channel. 😁
Yes, nine years later, this video is still great. It’s an uncommon idea for a movie, and your analysis of it is fantastic particularly the “Stormbringer” reference. I’ve avoided the album based on “Deep Purple Maxim #47”, which states: “Based on its place as the final Golden Era/Ritchie Blackmore album, with the band in emotional disrepair, and a "Southern Rock Tornado" on the album cover, it logically must contain subpar music.” Given your challenge of DPM #47 and myself being a long-toiling Drummer and fellow Rhythm Bro, I shall finally listen to “Stormbringer." Just as critical to the greatness of the video, and apologies if this has been mentioned somewhere in the last nine years, is the FACT that at 7:26-7:28, Brandon, YOU are providing voiceover work for the character onscreen. You were moonlighting at a VERY young age! Bravo!
fight scene at the end was bad ass
11:15 his reaction is spot on
"Ralph Bakshi would be proud..." To be fair, the art and animation more closely resembles Don Bluth's stuff... This was actually a very well done animated film...for grownups. If you like The Plague Dogs, Fire & Ice, Heavy Metal, Wizards, etc...give it a shot...as entertaining and amusing as the critique here was (and yes, I LOL'd at several of the jokes, good stuff) it wasn't really fair to this exceptionally odd and well crafted animated film...
The whole movie is on youtube available to watch for free.
You are seriously hilarious and fun to watch. Great reviewing!
13:18 Well, given the fact you just said Nazi, I'm aftraid you've been demonetized. Then again, I'm 100% sure you already were since this is Felidae we're talking about
Can you please review Watership Down or Plague dogs
I showed Felidae, Watership Down, and Wizards to my nephews. My sister doesn't ask me to babysit anymore 👍
How do you not have more subs? This is brilliant!!
I got sad news for those who cares about the english cast. Cary Elwes, John Hurt and Michael Madsen did *not* voiced those characters. Instead, those are unknown voice actors from London. Link for those who are still sceptic: felidae.fandom.com/wiki/Felidae_(film)#English_Cast
I was 10 or 11yo when I first saw this movie... rent it along with the DBZ: Bardock movie, a random Mazinger Z vol., The Magic Cauldron an some games, it was a fun weekend, though my little cousin was never the same after that XD.
How the hell do cats understand how to generate electricity?
4:36 Brandon used the line from Reservoir Dogs since Bluebeard is voiced by Michael Madsen for the English dub version of Felidae to make a reference.
8:53 *DECAPITATIOOOOOON!*
Have you ever seen the movie "House" from 1977. Come on...you know you wanna review that.

"But it is foreign, so there must be something weird about it." The poor thing has no idea until he watches it. xD
This movie is like if Alan Moore and Quentin Tarantino had a baby in the form of an animated movie.
They didn't forget to animate his mouth! It was him thinking not talking XD

Just discovered your channel and have been binging for the last couple of days. Wow, I think I just OD'ed, LOL. Great stuff!
When you said the soundtrack needed that "German touch" I was expecting Kraftwerk or something.
