Lyrics:
You're feeling nervous, aren't you, boy?
With your quiet voice and impeccable style
Don't ever let them steal your joy
And your gentle ways
To keep 'em from running wild
They can kick dirt in your face
Dress you down, and tell you that your place
Is in the middle, when they hate the way you shine
I see you tugging on your shirt
Trying to hide inside of it
And hide how much it hurts
Let 'em laugh while they can
Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind
I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends
And the joke's on them
You get discouraged, don't you, girl?
It's your brother's world for a while longer
We gotta dance with the devil on a river
To beat the stream
Call it living the dream, call it kicking the ladder
They come to kick dirt in your face
To call you weak and then displace you
After carrying your baby on your back across the desert
I saw your eyes behind your hair
And you're looking tired, but you don't look scared
Let 'em laugh while they can
Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind
I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends
And the joke's on them
Let 'em laugh while they can
Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind
I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends
And the joke's on them
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

It’s 1:30am in Texas right now. I’m laying on the couch in tears feeling like a failure as mother. My precious son is 9. He’s autistic and he’s perfect in my eyes. He’s curled up at my feet. It’s the closest he’s come near me lately. I see so much beauty in him. I can see the world through his big blue eyes. But I also see his pain. And I see the way the world looks at him. This song. This perfectly written string of words fills my heart with hope. It feels me with power. I sing your music daily and just finished your audio book. When it was over my heart broke a bit. It was if , for awhile I was hearing a friend talk to me about their life. It made me feel less alone. I just want to say thank you for your words. For your voice. For sharing your soul with us.

Your son is a blessing and sadly others cannot see the gift God has given you" to raise and care for everyday.. He is so blessed to have you as his mother and God will give you strength in those times that it gets hard in your Lives. in the name of Jesus Christ his son .. May the good Lord always watch over you and your son ...

I wish i could say it gets easier but it does get more manageable. My son is 25 you surely isn't alone. We are out here fighting this fight of faith with you. You just can't see us individually. God is in control of our lives take it day by day. Start your day with prayer throughout the day give Him thanks and end your day with prayer. God loves you and so do i. ❤🥰❤🤝🏽🤝🏽🤝🏽🙏🏽🙌🏾

I just read your story and it touched my heart. I have an 8yr old daughter with autism. I tell her how much I love her she can’t say it back. It used to break my heart until I realized she shows her love in different ways. You are a great mother the fact that you worry that you are not ,just shows that you are a great mother.

I'm a School Counselor and used this video as part of a Social Emotional Lesson for Middle School this morning. Tough crowd. This video is absolutely disarming and powerful. It has a great representation of ages and cultures/skin tones that is inclusive and reaches the empathy even Middle Schoolers can access.

A few days ago I turned 44 years old and today I listen to this song for the very first time, and I couldn’t stop crying while I was on the train to my house... I’m latino, inmigrant, gay and old... many times I have felt invisible in a city with millions of people around me, but tonight I saw myself in your song. Maybe you never read this but today you made me feel human again for 4:58 minutes... Thank you Brandi... ♥️

Happy Birth-week, Santiago. I am 43, and recently I have been feeling old too, but I am hoping for a 2nd wind because I am about to move countries and start again from scratch. It is scary, and yes, it is lonely. Life has so many ups and downs. But I am determined to try. I was a strong, energetic and creative person when I was young and lost most of that the past few years, but I want to try and find some of that in me still. I hope you also find the best in you soon too. Warmest wishes.

Do you share it with a certain kind of client? I'm having a hard time understanding the reasoning behind showing it to them. Is it the "the joke's on them" line? Is it about bullying maybe? Or is it "I've seen how it ends". Is it to tell them it will all be okay in the end? Sorry if I come across ignorant, I just want to understand :)

To the young people watching this video and listening to this song, REMEMBER THIS. The bullies are ALWAYS more miserable than you. They are broken, sad, lonely and empty, and the only thing that makes them feel better is to try to make YOU as miserable as THEM with their ugly words and actions. Keep fighting through the tears and you will come out on the other side more strong and confident and beautiful than you could ever imagine. You are worth the fight ❤❤❤❤

I’m a transgender youth in the south, texas to be exact. I just turned 18 and i’m so scared to be an adult here, it feels like everyone here hates me and who i am, what i am, every inch of me. but this song gives me hope, makes me feel like maybe, just *maybe* it’s worth it, to keep on trying and maybe get somewhere better. I’m terrified of violence, to use public bathrooms, to speak or for my binder to show. i hope it’s going to be okay, that i’ll live a long happy life where people don’t hate my identity and see me for who i am. Thank you for this song, and thank you for the hope and peace it brings me.❤️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

I’m a 51 year old mom in Toronto. My daughter is a year younger than you. She’s queer and most of her friends are queer and trans. Most of my friends are as well. It enrages, terrifies, and deeply saddens me what all trans and nonbinary people are being faced with, this endless barrage of ignorance and hatred and literal violence. It’s time that the assholes perpetrating this rottenness are accountable. It needs to stop yesterday. I just want to send you some love and support, and I got a big old internet mom hug if you need one. And I’m a good listener if you ever need a friend. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. I’m glad this song gives you some comfort. It does me, too. And I literally just sent it to my kid.

Most of the time I am unimpressed and depressed with this world because I am different. This magic song makes me want to grab some paper towels and a bottle of windex and shine up my soul until it sparkles like a huge diamond. How restored and soaring you made me feel. With thanks from your newest fan, a 56 year old single red state misfit in Columbus, Ohio who discovered you and this song for the very first time tonight while watching you on the Grammys. My dog Belle moved off the couch and stared at me because she thought something was wrong because it made me cry. Many thanks for making me feel something. Just HAD to attempt to let you know.

When I'm in the car i usually stick to the stations that play music from before the 90s, occasionally listening to 90s if they're playing a good song. Kind of sad that you have to get on the internet and search up gems like this just to listen to it. Been a fan of Brandi since i was a kid. Always hoped and wished she'd blow up like Taylor Swift, can't say I'm disappointed that she didn't. But she does deserve much more recognition.

You're feeling nervous, aren't you, boy? With your quiet voice and impeccable style Don't ever let them steal your joy And your gentle ways, to keep 'em from running wild They can kick dirt in your face Dress you down, and tell you that your place Is in the middle, when they hate the way you shine I see you tugging on your shirt Trying to hide inside of it and hide how much it hurts Let 'em laugh while they can Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends And the joke's on them You get discouraged, don't you, girl? It's your brother's world for a while longer We gotta dance with the devil on a river To beat the stream Call it living the dream, call it kicking the ladder They come to kick dirt in your face To call you weak and then displace you After carrying your baby on your back across the desert I saw your eyes behind your hair And you're looking tired, but you don't look scared Let 'em laugh while they can Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends And the joke's on them Let 'em laugh while they can Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends And the joke's on them

I listen to this song regularly on my commute to work, and while I do housework it comes on my automatic playlists. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard it. I cry every time she gets to the part where she says “they displace you after carrying your baby on your back across the desert”. I’ll never come close to feeling what that must be like. I was born in America. My parents were not fleeing from anything. The rest of the song resonates with me as a disabled person, as a queer person, and as a woman. And that part always makes me just feel so much like I want to send kisses and hugs and good fortune to anybody in that situation- and so sorry that I cannot help. I hope anybody who is trying to win a better life for their children is met with victory. I’m not a religious person, but that line in this song really does make me pray to the universe that anybody who has carried their child on their back across the desert enjoys every good thing life has to offer after they end up where they want to be.

Considering that the vast majority of Elton John's songs were written by his long time lyricist, the songwriter Bernie Taupin, that's an interesting thing for Elton to have said. Elton composes the music, but it's Bernie who writes the words. The lyrics for almost all of Elton's beloved songs were written by Bernie Taupin, such as "Tiny Dancer," "Candle in the Wind," "Your Song," "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues," "Sacrifice," "Daniel," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," etc. Bernie's a quintessential Gemini lyricist, as is Brandi Carlile. Gemini are usually phenomenally gifted lyricists, when they're musically inclined. Other famous Gemini singer/songwriters are: -Bob Dylan -Paul McCartney -Tupac Shakur -Prince -Kendrick Lamar -Macklemore -Lauryn Hill -The Notorious B.I.G -Stevie Nicks -Brian Wilson -Danny Elfman -Lionel Richie -Sturgill Simpson -Melissa Etheridge -Noel Gallagher -Alanis Morisette -Pete Wentz And on and on...

As a Christian, I believe all Christians need to listen to this and hear her words. We are too judgemental and aren't the loving people the Lord commands us to be. We are to love one another. That is a complete sentence/command, there is no "except for" at the end. To those that feel judged and are hurting, you are loved just as you are. Others don't define you nor have been given any authority to judge you. Don't catch their ball of hate when thrown at you. You are worthy ❤️

Upon learning today of the passing of Rita Houston, the program director at WFUV-FM in New York, and reading that Rita was included in this video, I immediately needed to find it and watch. And, of course, watch it and listen to it again. And again. It was a delight to read Brandi's kind remarks about Rita today (wfuv.org/content/rita-houston-apostle-artistry), including the mention that Rita was the first person to play Brandi's music on the radio. That speaks volumes to Rita's insight, talent, spirit and grace . . . that she so quickly recognized, embraced and supported outstanding musical artists like Brandi Carlile.

I go to a dance studio where I take ballet, pointe, and am on the performance team. I am going into my sophomore year of high school and at my dance studio the year you graduate you are allowed to have a senior dance. So you can pick what style, choreography, and song you dance to. Ever since my mom knew of this, she has taken it upon herself to brainstorm song ideas for my senior dance. When she drives me places she plays her own music in the car and every so often she will have me listen to a song and say “this would be perfect for a senior dance🤩”. I always kind of just said “yeah” and forget about it. A couple days ago, she was driving me to dance and said she wanted me to listen to a song. I rolled my eyes a little and expected it to be just another slow tempo, lyrical song. But when I listened to it, I had chills with every word this woman sang. This song has so much real emotion and soal in it. When the song ended I immediately downloaded it on my phone. The cracks in her voice are so addicting and moving at the same time. I have listened to this song on repeat for I don’t know how many hours and it never gets old. There is no doubt in my mind that this is going to be my senior dance and my favorite song forever.

I live in the Deep South though I was born and raised in the northeast during the 60s. I still hold those values of equality, justice, opportunity and loving acceptance of every lifeform on our wondrous Mother Earth. I battle in local governmental politics, exposing BP in the 2010 Disaster, corruption and bigotry, environmental justice. I have been attacked inperson and on SM as a feminazi, libtard, as a "anti-growth communist" etc. I wrote my older brother and despaired that my voice was not heard, what was the point? He told me "Never stop, your voice is your gift, your voice gives courage to others, never stop talking!" And he shared a link to this incredible anthem! And I feel strengthened every time I listen. "Misfits" are the movers and changers in the world!

Last year I saw her on PBS singing “The Story” and was blown away. Then I had to see if she was related to Go Gos singer Brenda Carlisle. But their names are spelled differently. Then I saw her on SNL giving another flawless performance. I’m sure she gained many more fans after that. And now this masterpiece - OMG, it gives me chills!! It’s a rare song that can do that! Every time I’ve seen her sing it she gives it 110% regardless of crowd size, venue, etc. I ❤ this video, seeing the marginalized feel empowered and heard. She cannot be boxed into just the country genre. I had to look up the story behind this song. It was done when she had seen tRump ridicule and mock the disabled. She was incensed as much as many of us by his cruelty and lack of any empathy. It explains the line telling the young girl that it’s her brother‘s world a little while longer because yes, Hillary would’ve been president if we didn’t have the electoral college! I love the line about the mother, carrying her child on her back through the desert, which is so timely. And heartbreaking.💔 Especially now hearing how Trump wants to destroy them! Now I’m gonna have to get her book “Broken Horses.” I like seeing her sandwiched in between “the twins” who she’s been with since she was 17. And now they all live on the same property. So when she says they’re family, she means it! And one of the twins legally is since he married her younger sister. I was surprised to see Scooter Jennings playing the piano on several occasions. She said her one regret was calling the band the Brandi Carlisle Band, but she can rectify that - just let them all decide what they want to be called. I also like how she has her own cellist! I’m glad D. Cobb challenged her to write a song as big as The Story and Elvis’ Trilogy. I had to look that up, too. This far surpasses Elvis!’ Trilogy. This song is EPIC!

Everything about this song I love (the word is not too strong) - the lyrics, the singing, the music, the video, the cast, and the indomitable spirit of the song. I have listened to it two dozen times or so during this past week, and I have cried in grateful response to its deeply human message every single time that I have listened to it. The music begins with a sorrowful, almost mournful tone, but as the song progresses, the music becomes first more hopeful, and then by the four minute mark, it becomes a song of victory over loss and despair, while the performances of the diverse cast are exceptional for their emotional power. It is one of the most perfect songs I have ever heard and I have decided to make it the “official song” of the website on which I am working because of the subject that it expresses with such profound sensitivity, artistry, and grace. This is the song that I would want played when the sacred day comes that we know at last that we are making our way to the far, far better world that has been the hope of everyone who has ever lived.
