Lyrics:
All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true... I was made for you
I climbed across the mountain tops
Swam all across the ocean blue
I crossed all the lines and I broke all the rules
But baby I broke them all for you
Because even when I was flat broke
You made me feel like a million bucks
You do and I was made for you

My beautiful daughter died by suicide in 2014, she was 33. She LOVED you and went to any concert she could to see you. This song was played at her service and it’s so beautiful. Finally we are taking Katie’s ashes to Ireland in September, we will stand on the Cliffs of Moher and let her go. We will play ‘The Story’, and cry. You made her so happy. 💜

I heard it covered by 5er Blech first. That is quite the rendition. I like this original too. It would be awesome to see the full credits with this video. From website of Jeffery Pepper Rogers : “Her [Brandi’s] bandmate Phil Hanseroth wrote “The Story” before they even started playing together. Since her debut, all of the music appearing under the name Brandi Carlile has been the product of an extraordinarily close partnership of Carlile and the twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth. All three write songs and share the writing credits equally for every song regardless of who contributes what (à la Lennon and McCartney).”

"All of these lines across my face, tell you the story of who I am, so many stories of where I've been and how I got to where I am". These words saved me during many rounds of chemo and radiation. I was diagnosed with breast cancer when I had a kindergartener and a 4th grader. My boys were so young, I told my oncology team, bring it on, I can take it...I just have live long enough to get them through high school. The chemo took it's toll and aged me so much faster than my friends, it was hard to deal with. Now I know the lines across my face tell the story of where I've been. 15 years out and one boy has graduated from college and one who is a Junior...both are thriving and I celebrate life every day. Thank you, Brandi for putting into words, what I could not.

@@mikamamma I haven't heard Shelby Lynn's music in awhile. She is not a current artist. I had a couple of her CD's in the late 90's. I am not sure if she still records music. She started out as country on the 1st CD that I bought and then went more bluesy on the 2nd CD. She played Johnny Cash's mom in the movie Walk the Line. Literally the only song I remember loving back then of hers is called something like "What About the Love We Made". I loved the soul in her voice. Just talking about this makes me want to explore her music again. 🙂

my best friend passed away a few weeks ago.. we met in the bar I had started working at when I moved to NorCal over 7 years ago - it was karaoke night and after she heard me sing, she bee-lined over to me and asked if I knew any Brandi Carlile to sing with her - I immediately said, “The Story” and we tore the roof down that night ..the rest is history 😏 we ended up going to see your show in Oakland later that year and it was one of the best times of my entire life - we sang so many of your songs together throughout the years, you have always been our fav **if you remember the girl at Kate Wolf Festival with the “I FREAKIN’ ❤️ YOU!” sign several years ago, that was me 😆 I was standing with another one of my girlfriends who passed away named Bri, who also absolutely loved you Brandi, you’ve been my crutch the past few weeks and I want to say thank you, so very much for your words and beautiful voice; if you ever have a show in Iowa.. I will soooo be there! rest in peace, Em 😌

This is truly one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and I cannot imagine any other voice delivering it besides that of Brandi Carlile. It reminds us that we all have a "story," and our stories are typically a mixed bag of joy and pain, but despite our struggles, our stories are what make us who we are. I think most people feel this way at multiple points in their lives. The other day, a girl I've known for a long time, who makes money, has all the nice things, is organized and type A, told me that her life is a mess and said that i have it all together, so it must be nice. I live with my in laws, struggle with ADHD, and feel like things are falling apart at least twice a week.

I cant believe I heard this song for the first time today while driving along the Hudson in the Adirondacks. It broke me and I needed it. So many losses and too many deaths contrasted with meaning barely unfolding and so little joy, it all just builds up to a moment when only something so powerful as these words sung from this voice releases the inexpressible, crushing inner vexation of the soul, and I can breathe again. Even for 5 minutes. It'll have to be enough. Thank you, God.

My mom has loved Brandi for ever since I can remember, she’s been to at least seven of her concerts and I’ve been to three. Two months ago I attempted to take my own life. When I was in the recovery mental facility for several weeks the nurses would let us each pick a song to listen to during hygiene time, and I always picked this one, every time, and every time I would cry, but for some reason I knew everything would turn out ok. When I needed her most, I reverted to what comforted me as a child-this song. She will never see this, but Brandi gave me a piece of my mother when I was far from her and hurting, and it saved me. Thank you so much for this Brandi.

I have learned to live with both, but my life is forever diminished. I have another son (his brother) and my love and our shared loss keep me going. Bless you and hold tight to your relationship with your mother, which sounds like a Godsend.

But Brandi didn’t write the song, here is the story behind The Story: From website of Jeffery Pepper Rogers : “Her [Brandi’s] bandmate Phil Hanseroth wrote “The Story” before they even started playing together.

I'm typing this comment on my Grandma's account right now, she passed away a few months ago. She was so unconditionally loving no matter who you were, She had no hate in her heart and just wanted to spread love around the world. She moved in after my Grandpa died and we all thought she had Many years left. There was no explanation for her death however its safe to say she passed from a broken heart from being away from my Grandpa Jim. This was one of the last things she ever listened too. Though it pains me to think she suffered without the touch of my grandfather I find beauty in her endless love for him and to me it is almost poetic, not even death could move you away from the love she had to give nor could it separate my grandparents. As I go through her pictures and video history I see that this song was one of the last things she ever heard, and it reminds me that she longed to be together with her husband, even though she could smile through the suffering she was in great pain. That pain is over now and my beautiful GrandMother Marijean Thomas is at peace spreading her love for eternity.

My Story. When I was a kid about 12 to 13. I used to go around to a girls place and we used to play together. I used to suspect that she liked me because she used to stare at me alot. But I didn't know anything about girls at the time. Eventually her parents moved away to another part of the country. Life got in the way and I forgot about her. Recently, by coincedence through a mutual connection we have gotten in contact again. Many years later we are now both in early middle age. And she has told me about her life and the men in it. It turns out I was her first crush. It's the Greatest Complement a man can ever receive. And she sent me this song. Although I have listened to it a couple of times now. It's the first time I have heard of it.

It was great and one of the most incredible things ever. Once I have a couple of things out of the way we/I intend to take some time off and spend a couple of weeks together..

I had a crush on a girl all through highschool and remained close friends with her since. we hung out one evening together on the beach almost 4 years ago before I joined the Navy and she reached out to me about a month ago admitting to falling deeply in love with me over the past few years since we went to the beach that one day.

This song makes me think that when it comes to relationships in general (friends, family, lovers etc.), I believe that every single thing we've every been through has, yes made us who we are today, yet they are NOT FOR US TO KEEP FOR OURSELVES. Our stories are meant to be told! Our hurts, our joys, our sorrows. Even our embarrassment and shame are meant to be told! They are meant for others! You never know if your story is going to help someone is some way! Please don't keep things to yourselves! Be an open book! There is so much joy in telling your story!

I saw Brandi Carlile perform with Wynonna Judd in Grand Rapids a few months ago, she was there to support Wynonna and act as a backup singer. It speaks volumes about Brandi that she supported Wynonna like that (and the entire concert was fabulous by the way), just as she has supported Tanya Tucker, Joni Mitchell, and so many other female artist. She is selfless and timeless and brimming with class, not to mention her incredible talent. If there were a musical time capsule for the 21st century, this song would have to be placed therein so others could hear it for generations to come.

I loved this song before it became a runaway juggernaut. My mother heard me listening to it one day and she fell head over heels with this song. She would ask me to play it for her so often I felt like she loved it almost more than I did. When she departed from this earth and from my life a future without her seemed impossible. I love to come back here and listen to this like she’s still here sitting beside me. I miss you so bad everyday mom the aching and longing never stops. I feel like I’m only half of myself without you. There will never be anyone else like you. I’m trying to measure up but you set the bar too high for me to reach. I can’t hear this song without thinking of you. At least I did get your good taste in music.

By the way, I watch the Voice and was so happy to hear Janice sing The Story. I cried at her version. Then by a wonderful surprise, not long after that Voice episode aired, my daughter and I were in the audience at a Brandi Carlile show and low and behold, out comes Janice to sing The Story with Brandi!!!! So happy Brandi had heard about Janice singing her song and invited her to sing together, it was an amazing moment.

Brandi has done other amazing work as well, & is also now part of a female group called Highwomen (a takeoff on the name of the male country supergroup called Highwaymen) ... most recently she has done a new album with Tanya Tucker, both singing with her & co-producing it along with Shooter Jennings ...
